I can‘t say that I loved this as much as the two story collections that came before it, but it was still enjoyable. I liked the sections where Geralt and Ciri were together more so than the parts that got political.

A bit slow and perhaps not well-paced, but overall still a good read. I have heard that this is supposed to be the first full book he wrote? And I would believe that. The politics in particular were boring, and the training sections do sort of run together without much to break them up, but characters are developed, and the middle section of this book is genuinely very engaging, and illuminates Geralt's morality and themes of the series very well.

ssleif I'm recommending it, but with the caveat that it's not a good entry into the series, the short stories are better, and that I would not have been motivated to get to the good parts if I wasn't just motivated to consume it all because I like the characters and want to learn about the world. 3mo
ssleif Also, even though the show seems to have skipped through the majority of the events of this book, I hope that they slow down in the next season and do choose to adapt that middle section I was talking about from this book. Which they seem to have skipped. #witcher 3mo

After playing the video game, reading the comic, and watching the show, I finally started the original Witcher books--at least the audiobook. The world building in Blood of Elves is great but it's a bit slow. Sapkowski has a fondness for conversations among big groups. There are some solid character moments and two compelling fight scenes but perhaps too much exposition.

I did not love this as much as the first book/story collection, but it was still pretty good. I might like the show best of all though?? I‘m sure it has nothing to do with Henry Cavill being all growly and mysterious 😆

Traci1 I love the show, but listening to Henry's Geralt voice makes my throat hurt. 5mo

Finished reading this book today and I have more questions than answers. There were a lot of character introductions and world building but not too much of a plot. However, I am intrigued to find out what will happen to Ciri that I'll give the next book a chance. Now, I am to watch the series. 3⭐

I figured I‘d give this series one more try, and I‘ve officially confirmed it‘s not for me. I like Ciri, but I‘m not invested in the wider conflict, I find the worldbuilding pretty infodumpy, and the humour doesn‘t land for me. I CAN see how I might get attached to the characters across multiple books, but I don‘t want to spend any more time discovering if that‘s the case.

Wasn't sure how I'd take to a full novel after the two collections of shorter stories. But this one gave more scope to the whole, got to see more of the major characters i love (game wise) and the different circles, of royalty and such playing at their own games. Plus seeing Geralt's character in a more rounded way, thanks to more POVs

I'm sad that this one was in my tbr pile so long before I read it. I really enjoyed the TV show so I was hesitant to pick up the book. I loved it! I feel like the TV show gave me more background and that enriched the book. I look forward to the further adventures of Gerald, Ciri and Yennifer.

Finally found some time to finish my third witcher novel after forgetting about it for nearly a year. I‘m glad I picked it up again, as i immensely enjoy all those little modern twists on the classical fantasy motivs. Feminist fantasy written by a man is possible, and here‘s proof - even though apparently in the game you get to collect pokemon cards for every woman gerald takes to bed 🙈

Continuing with my read of The Witcher! I‘m focusing on the series this month. Unlike the short stories, you can really see Sapkowski‘s storytelling techniques here. Long, episodic chapters; jumps in time; and description through conversation, makes up a lot of this novel. It really is a build up to the rest of the books. The short stories gave background, and this novel is setting up the main storyline of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri.

Geralt is one of those characters that took a while for me to connect with. However, he won me over. I love how sarcastic he is to people who try to prove they are smarter than him. He waits for them to prove themselves wrong and isn‘t afraid to embellish the fact afterward. He is also fierce when he chooses to protect someone. #fantasy #thewitcher

The first book in the Witcher series is written purposefully to drag the readers into its world and to leave them eager to know more. A war is looming on the horizon. Tension is building. Elves are rebelling. The Elder Child is growing up and gathering her powers. The wizards are plotting. The kings are plotting. The priests are plotting. Many questions arise, and are left to be answered in the sequel.

Opide After playing the third Witcher game, this is a book world I‘ve been dying to delve into! 2y

The author did not shy away from the realities of war. He makes you really think about the motives of each kingdom and whose side you‘d be on if you were in that world. I felt that the descriptions of the scenes were so detailed that I could picture exactly what it would look like. I loved how real the world seemed. This book had many scenes where I couldn't put it down.

I‘m giving this a borderline pick because I love the characters, and this really does continue their character development. However this does miss on plot, it really feels like just world building. I will continue to enjoy the series but I did not enjoy this as much as The Last Wish.

Nessavamusic Btw for those interested in starting The Witcher series, this is usually listed as book 1. It really isn‘t. However, if you have watched the Netflix series, this pretty much continues where that left off. 2y

If youre looking to read expecting it to be like the TV series then dont bother
Geralt has a completely different feel as opposed to the TV character
I listened on audio & had difficulty enjoying
I wish Id read rather than audio & I may well do so at some point
I liked the narrator but found him annoying when narrating the child character.
I wish Id read prior to watching because this colored my perception as to what the characters should be like

Though I didn't enjoy The Last Wish much when I read it, I liked this more. The characters seem more solid & interesting, particularly the female characters. They are smart, powerful, and witty. The one problem is that nobody does much. A lot of the book is about politics & reminiscing about wars past & planning for wars future. It was done interestingly but a lot of it went on just a bit too long. I still don't see myself reading the full series.

This is the longest it has ever taken me to finish a book. It‘s not my typical read and I had a really hard time getting into it. My partner LOVES The Witcher; the books, the game and the new show. When I felt like I needed to mix up my reading he suggested The Witcher. I didn‘t dislike the book it just isn‘t the type of thing I typically choose and didn‘t feel connected.
