Royal Assassin
Royal Assassin: The Farseer Trilogy | Robin Hobb
102 posts | 144 read | 7 reading | 60 to read
Fitz has survived his first hazardous mission as king’s assassin, but is left little more than a cripple. Battered and bitter, he vows to abandon his oath to King Shrewd, remaining in the distant mountains. But love and events of terrible urgency draw him back to the court at Buckkeep, and into the deadly intrigues of the royal family.   Renewing their vicious attacks on the coast, the Red-Ship Raiders leave burned-out villages and demented victims in their wake. The kingdom is also under assault from within, as treachery threatens the throne of the ailing king. In this time of great danger, the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz’s hands—and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice.BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Robin Hobb's Assassin's Quest.   Praise for Robin Hobb and Royal Assassin   “Fantasy as it ought to be written . . . Robin Hobb’s books are diamonds in a sea of zircons.”—George R. R. Martin   “[Robin] Hobb continues to revitalize a genre that often seems all too generic, making it new in ways that range from the subtle to the shocking.”—Locus   “[Royal Assassin] reaches astonishing new heights. . . . The Farseer saga is destined for greatness—a must-read for every devotee of epic fantasy.”—Sense of Wonder

Back from Kos - where I read for approximately zero minutes as going on holiday with a 5 year old is hard work & not really at all relaxing. Gone are the days of reading 6 books a week while sat in a leafy taverna sipping ouzo. Cue 14 days of wrestling with a bottle of sunscreen & a recalcitrant child.

So am finally on to volume 2 of this trilogy. Which I'm enjoying & is helping to reduce my stress level.

SamanthaMarie Hahaha this is all too real. Just replace 5 year old with 4 year old 🤦🏼‍♀️ these kiddos 😅 4d
saresmoore What an excellent synopsis of traveling with young children! 😆 4d
Lucy_Anywhere Hahaha! I'm on holiday with a 15 month old - trying to stop him eating sand, changing nappies in all sorts of awkward places, and bribing him with sweet potato chips whenever we want to sit down with a pint 😂 4d
Smrloomis 😂 hope you get a little ouzo and relaxation in there somewhere - but it‘s pretty tough. I don‘t know how people do it with - especially with three or more 🤔😱🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 3d

Finally done with all the daughter's grad party madness and now back to reading! I loved book two of the Farseer trilogy. Slow yes, lots of details, but once you become hooked on Fitz and the rest of the characters, you really won't mind. Burrich might be my favorite here, and Nighteyes of course. On to the next book!

Second in her Farseer Trilogy sees our young hero Fitz growing up, falling in love, bonding with a wolf (well, we've all done it) and getting ever more mired in the nasty doings at court as his erstwhile protectors the King and Prince Verity are being out-manouevered by evil Prince Regal (boo, hiss). Slow-moving, maybe, but strangely compelling.

Cathythoughts Sounds good. I got the first one recently ... must find some time 🙄👍🏻 2mo

So I am left a bit... confused about how I feel about this one. I adored The Assassins Apprentice and was excited to see where Fitzs journey was going.
Well. I didn‘t see this coming.
Overall I think it was executed properly. I am full of feels and kinda want to cry. I am reading Assassins Quest now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

1. That‘s a tough one because I love fruit: watermelon, peaches, mangoes, blueberries, oranges
2. The tagged book is over 600 pages. Does that count as a chunkster?
3. I haven‘t read very many graphic novels. They‘re not really my thing. But I did read Gaiman‘s A Study In Emerald

This is the second in The Farseer Trilogy. I can understand how this trilogy could drive someone nuts. It is so long and detailed. But this fictional world is so well developed and Fitz is such an amazing character that I could just spend the whole day following him around....which is basically what I have been doing today. Love these big epic stories.

Despise my slow reading abilities this book had me on edge the majority of the time reading it! I thought this book would be more of a political fantasy but I were pleasantly surprised that it was easy to read, since political fantasy usually makes me less interested I loved the first book and can't wait to read the third one.

Since I wasn't a big fan of the first book of this trilogy (It was somehow to slow for me) it's alone my boyfriends fault that I started this one. It's his favourite series and he just left the book lying around in my flat. And now I absolutly love it! It turned out to be one of the books where you just can't stop reading until you're done. And now excuse me, I have to start the third one! 😃

I could barely put this book down and would think about it between time that I was able to read. Robin Hobb is a master at her craft. These characters will become part of you. I don't think I need to convince you to read this if you've read the fist book of the Farseer trilogy but if you need encouragement -- read this book!

Really enjoyed this second book in Hobb‘s Farseer series. It was a bit slow in parts and I get frustrated at how utterly clueless Fitz can be but he is still a kid so I am forgiving Hobb for that. Once again the story ends with some plot lines resolved and more questions left unanswered leaving the reader satisfied yet wanting to know more.

So I just finished reading this book, and I loved it. But what's up with this cover? Fitz is 16 in this book. How many 16-year-olds look like this?? (This is another reason I had to buy the UK editions!)

Whilst the Liveship Trilogy remains my first love - the character driven story telling here is just as amazing. The first 1/2 of the book is a slow burn, ensuring we know & understand the internal dialogue & motivations of the characters - before Hobb pulls out all the stops and propels us to the finale with gusto. What it less satisfying is the clearer definition between good and evil - I prefer it when she muddies the waters more!

Andrew65 This is a wonderful trilogy too, pleased to hear about the Liveship Trilogy as they are next for me. 13mo

Bailedbailed

@Caroline2 I bailed, sorry 😞 #unpopularopinion #buddyread

This was really slow to start and seemed to not really go anywhere. I even skipped ahead (something I‘ve never done before!) and while I was interested in the events, I‘m just not invested enough to read on. Everyone praises Hobb‘s writing but I felt that she tells rather than shows what‘s happening and its just so...wordy! Maybe sometime in the future, I‘ll give it another go.

Caroline2 No worries at all! 😉 I completely understand, it is a bit dragged out at times! 👍🏻 13mo
laurenbescoby I love the detail she goes into, but I totally get how these books aren't for everyone! 13mo
Bookworm-Bobbie @caroline2 @miralunasbooknook I feel like I‘ve missed out on something - everyone has only good things to say and here I am not rating it at all. 🤔 13mo
Caroline2 Nah I totally understand! I think she has a lovely writing style and I loved the characters but the plot really dragged and I wasn‘t keen on fitz and molly‘s relationship! 😴 so I totally understand why you bailed! I was very close to bailing myself!!! 13mo
laurenbescoby I started with the rainwild chronicles, half way through, not realising there were so many books. Thats how I fell in love with it. Rainwild, liveships and then I did the fitz trilogies in order. By then I'd fallen in love with the world. It is a daunting series at 16, rather long books! X 13mo

Bookworm-Bobbie @Caroline2 yeah!! And not being a football fan, I‘ve got 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading time! 😁 13mo

@Caroline2 are you ready to start this as a #buddyread today?

Caroline2 Ahhh yeah bring it on!! 👍🏻 apologises in advance if it takes me ages! I don‘t get much chance to read so it‘s going to take me at least a wk I think! 😳 13mo
Bookworm-Bobbie @Caroline2 no rush, I‘ll be really impressed if I manage it in a week. I‘m excited ☺️ 13mo
Caroline2 Phew!! 😅 I know a few ladies on here can read a book in a day or two but it always takes me about a wk! Esp big books like this! Glad to know I won‘t be holding you back! 👍🏻 13mo
Bookworm-Bobbie @Caroline2 😳 a day or two? That‘s commitment! Nope, take your time 👍😁 13mo

Hey everyone! I'm currently reading the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb! Anyone knows any other books like it?

They're here! I read Assassin's Apprentice, loved it, and immediately ordered the whole trilogy. I had to place my first Book Depository order, because I love the U.K. covers so much! I can't wait to dive back into this world!

TrishB Yay 👍🏻😁 love these 1y
Bklover Beautiful covers! 1y
Kalalalatja Woohoo! 1y
BucklingBookshelves They‘re so pretty! Book Depository just gives even more options for expanding the TBR! 1y

Someone on Litsy offered to cohost a readalong of Robin Hobb's books in order (#hobbalong?) and I can't for the life of me remember who it was, nor can I find the original post.

Please comment if it was you! Or, if you're just interested in participating. 😊

AlaMich That sounds fun! I‘ve read the Assassin‘s trilogy and Liveship Traders, by I‘ve planning to start Tawny Man soon. 1y
DGRachel I have the first book but haven‘t started it yet. I‘d love the excuse to pick it up if you decide to do a buddy read! 1y
DivaDiane I‘ve been wanting to reread it from the beginning single the first book@of the last trilogy came out. Count me in! 1y

DivaDiane Oh and the last book, Assassin‘s Fate (the last book) has come out. 1y
DivaDiane Oh and the Soldier‘s Son Trilogy is not part of the series. 1y
kgriffith I‘ve read the first one and just bought the first liveship book the other day! I‘d be down to at least know about it and jump in as I‘m able 🤓 1y
2BR02B @DivaDiane Good to know, thanks! 1y
2BR02B Ha! I found the post finally! @sammisho!! Are you still interested? 1y
2BR02B Also tagging @Ashley_Nicoletto who expressed interest in participating. 1y
2BR02B And @daena, same reason. 1y
Mitch Ooh...I‘d love to read in order with you guys! Count me in! 1y
Ashley_Nicoletto I would love to read this, but I'm a terrible host. 🤣🤣 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Why must people always be tempting me with great readalongs?! I‘ve read the Assassin trilogy and have been meaning to read the rest, but I‘d never catch up. I still haven‘t finished the Earthsea books! 1y
2BR02B @Clare-Dragonfly I'd say you have a pretty good reason! Newborns aren't exactly known for being conducive to productivity. 😆 1y
Clare-Dragonfly He is an excellent and snuggly reason for not reading! But I want to snuggle him and read too! 😆 1y
InLibrisVeritas I am definitely interested! (Like I don't have enough to read...😅) 1y
Velvetsun I just got the first book, and would love to be a part of the readalong too. 😊 12mo
sammisho I just saw this! I've decided I'm awful at hosting read alongs, but book 1 just came off my holds list! 12mo
sammisho I searched #hobbalong to find you! I couldn't remember who I talked to about this! 😂 12mo

Fitz returns broken from the Mountain Kingdom. He aids Verity in defence, helps the new Queen-in-Waiting settle in but is frustrated he can‘t counter Regal as the Duchies fracture. Teenager Fitz feels misunderstood and unloved though we see that‘s not true. And Nighteyes! Wonderful.

The 1st person POV has you as frustrated as Fitz that he can only act so far. It doesn't end on a cliff-hanger, but ‘Royal Assassin‘ does leave you wanting more.
