We seem to have lost a lot of the complexities and subtleties of the story
I am NOT a fan of how the ending read, to me

Results? Worth the watch, but a separate story from the novel. Which is fine. If I wanted 1 to 1 the novel, I‘ll reread the book. #BookAdaptations

vonnie862 I just finished watching this and a weird way it reminded me of the Kenneth Branagh version. I do question some of the changes from the book, like Elizabeth's character, and I'm with you in regards to the ending. 3w

ChaoticMissAdventures I agree. Especially about the ending. I think Elizabeth could have been a bit truer to her character also. But for the father son relationship I think GDT got a bit personal with his own relationship with his father. I didn't realize until the day after I read this that Mia Goth played both Elizabeth and the mother, she is so good I didn't recognize her as the mother! 3w

ElizaMarie I got a little annoyed of what we dubbed “disney music“ when he was creating. It felt too childish at that point. 3w

I‘ve been hearing very mixed things about Guillermo del Toro‘s Franksenstein, so I wasn‘t sure if I was going to watch it. And then a friend sent me a review where the reviewer was mad saying “why is the monster hot? Why is the monster sympathetic?” And now I have to watch it. 😂

It‘ll be an after work treat for me today.

Just watched the new Frankenstein movie on Netflix. I‘m a huge fan of the book and this adaptation skewed pretty far from the source material. I wish it had been truer to the book! But it‘s beautifully shot, and Jacob Elordi was brilliant as the Creature.

My first read of Frankenstein, October 2025 in time to watch the new movie. So much wonderful language in here, and one of my fav parts of the movie was when the word Countenance was used. One could have a Countenance drinking game while reading this. Frankenstein is a whiney bastard who always runs from the problems he‘s created at the expense of his loved ones; the monster more human than human. The movie lacked so much of this.

danx I was utterly disappointed in del Toro‘s choice to end the movie with a quote from Byron. Why not a quote from Mary Shelley? There are so many wonderful lines in this book. 1mo

We read Frankenstein for our Bookclub. There are so many layers of meaning and angles to look at it from. I didn‘t understand half of all that, but I loved reading it. I watched some of the new Frankenstein movie and it is beautifully filmed, mesmerizing to watch , But , I was disappointed that the story was not the same as the book.

Tamra I fell in love with this novel! 💜 Agreed, it‘s incredibly rich in themes. I don‘t think I‘ll watch the film if that‘s the case. 1mo

I‘d love to have seen Mary Shelley‘s story told. I‘m curious to see what else happens, now that I‘m over the shock ( as I read somewhere that this film is true to the book 🙄) … 1mo

Did anyone else watch the #frankenstein movie that came out yesterday? I‘m SO intrigued by other peoples‘ thoughts. I have one major gripe with it- Victor‘s parental background. Much of the tragedy in the book centers around how Victor came from an extremely loving family but didn‘t carry those values to his treatment of his own “child”. The movie shows such a different background for Victor that seems to give a more generational trauma message.

TieDyeDude I haven't read the book yet, but I loved this movie version. It made me want to read the book more than any other version I've seen. That change in his background is interesting; it totally worked for the movie, and fits with themes in the rest of del Toro's filmography. I like the idea of him coming from a loving family, though. 1mo

Lin3han @TieDyeDude I HIGHLY recommend the book. I just reread it within the past week and it‘s a true masterpiece. I really liked Del Toro‘s version too! I think it‘s the best adaptation out there. I also don‘t put much stock into movie adaptations because the media is so different, but this adaptation was beautiful! 1mo

danx There is so much which was lost in the movie. Inverting his childhood; the monster too pretty; removing his mother at a young age and Justine completely making for an overly masculine story, even ending with a Byron quote which I found poor taste; the monster doesn‘t cause any direct hurt and so it lacked all complexity and had a totally different reasoning and morality. Pretty enough movie and enjoyed the theatre experience, confused that GdT is 1mo

danx supposed to be such a fan with the choices he made. I respect it‘s a take on the story and a retelling but not my favourite of his work. 1mo

I had started this book for the buddy read for #hauntedshelf but it took me too long. I could go into themes and why this book is so brilliant but mostly, I forgot how many melancholy fits Victor Frankenstein has. The man is the dictionary definition of depressed.

Guillermo del Toro is a true artist, and, since missing Nightmare Alley, it had been too long since I've seen one of his films in theaters. I was so happy to see his latest last night during its limited run. I've yet to read the source material, but his take on Frankenstein is hauntingly emotional and the film just looks amazing. Isaac and Elordi are brilliant. Streaming on Netflix tomorrow!

I'm really glad to have finally read this classic. It wasn't as spooky as I expected. I thought the creation scene would be more dramatic at least but a lot of the story is anticlimactic and Frankenstein doing nothing productive, only complaining how hard his life has become

This was a reread for me, and while I always love reading along with the #HashtagBrigade , ol' Victor got on my nerves even more this time around. He's just so useless! If he spent half the time actually doing something productive as he does sitting around and bemoaning his fate, the creature wouldn't have had the opportunities for destruction that he had. In the end, I think both Frankenstein and the creature are both monsters. This book ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) definitely deserves its status as a classic and is completely worth the read, but I get too aggravated with literally everyone to really love it. Soft pick.

Took my daughter to the movies on Halloween to see Frankenstein, by Guillermo Del Toro. It veers from the book but it was a beautiful adaptation, Elizabeth has far more of a role and the Creature‘s initial innocence is so well done. Daughter wept - I nearly did - really moving. Also a bit gory in places. I saw a great meme titling the movie “Frankenstein - or how to DIY Jacob Elordi in your basement” 😂

vivastory @Centique I log my movies, but I don't write reviews on them (with the one time exception of Brandon Cronenberg's Possessor, when I wrote something along the lines of: I don't think I've ever muttered WTF so frequently in the final 5 minutes of a movie. Never read the book, nor have I watched any of the movies...I tried when I was a kid, but I just couldn't because it was just too sad.

Frankenstein was enjoyable enough. As usual it wasn‘t at all what I thought it would be, but that‘s not a bad thing. My favorite chapters were the ones where they were on the boat. My least favorites were when Frank would just faint for months at a time.

Picture is of the pumpkin I bought today because the lady at the register said it looked like Frankenstein. (I didn‘t tell her she meant the creature.)

I noticed some mixed reactions as I left the sold out nighttime showing of Del Toro's latest. Personally? I loved it. I think that if you have read the, & enjoyed, the book you will be pleased. I think that otherwise it might seem too slow. Although there are a few liberties here & there it is a very faithful version & it is undoubtedly one of Del Toro's most visually stunning works.

Bookwomble @vivastory I really liked Cabinet of Curiosities, especially the Lovecraft adaptations (despite the liberties!). I'd guessed they weren't doing a second series after this time - so many good shows don't seem to get the traction they need 🫤 2mo

vivastory @Bookwomble This is true. I read recently in Filterworld that around 70 percent of the NF content are series. That's why I'm so cautious of starting any of them. I mean Stranger Things is wrapping up a decade after it aired, but this is the new norm for streaming 1mo

ElizaMarie Do y'all think the creature would have spared Elizabeth if he didn't marry her? Victor is so selfish. I think he knew that the creature will kill her, and didn't do enough to protect her. Like maybe getting out of her life, it's not like he seemed super excited about getting married anyway. 2mo

Clare-Dragonfly “Make another one of the people who horrified and disgusted you” doesn‘t sound like the greatest plan, but I guess the creature didn‘t think of “treat me like a human being and introduce me to other people as one so they‘ll get used to me,” and anyway I don‘t think Victor would go for that after the creature killed William. 2mo

dabbe The creature is highly intelligent and longs for companionship. Victor (the “father) shuns his creation JUST BECAUSE he is hideous on the outside. The creature then becomes hideous on the inside because of his abandonment by Victor. One just has to ask: which is more important to one's development as a human being? Nature or nurture? The easy answer is both are important, but the case for “nurture“ is about to be made by the creature in his tale. 2mo

KAO Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of this book, I‘ve been amazed that this takes place in Switzerland, of all places! So are these characters British transplants—and I missed that somehow? Or are they really speaking German, French, Italian, or Romansh (official languages of Switzerland), and we‘re just getting an English translation?? Just seems odd to me! 2mo

Robert Walton wrote to his family members from Russia and then later from his sea voyage about meeting this very sad fellow traveller (Victor, I assume), who spoke “in English, although with a foreign accent” and who later shared his tragic tale.
