A great collection of short stories. Strawberry Spring is my favorite story in this collection. King's shorter works often get overlooked, but some of his best writing is displayed in these collections.

My final time for the #24B4Monday — not too shabby considering I only got 5 hours during my last #readathon !

All total I read 10 graphic novels, finished Night Shift and started Salem‘s Lot. Overall very productive!

I actually started my timer over at midnight because I‘m going to keep track of my reading time throughout this week. It seems to motivate me so I can‘t complain!

Andrew65 It motivates me too, and allows me to identify when my reading drops. A great time, well done. 👏👏👏👍😊🥳🍾🥂🙌 1mo

This is an awesome collection of short stories from the master of horror. Some of my favorites include Children of the Corn, The Boogeyman, Sometimes They Come Back, Quitters Inc., I Know What You Need & Strawberry Spring. Not recommended to read right before bed, you have been warned! 😱😆 5⭐️

A fantastic break down of the source materials for the Creepshow revival. The vast majority of the source material is recently published, with the exception of King's "Gray Matter". Since they are based on short stories I'll be reading them before watching the episodes:

At the mall, the other day - I found myself picking up Night Shift again. It was my first King story collection, with the original cover book that must have disappeared over time. Clearance sales at the Hot Topic cosplay shop, got me a vampire lace collar. 🦇🤓 I just noticed, yesterday was World Goth Day. I did catch The Addams Family TV movies.

I started doing the #losersclub readalong last year and intended to audio my way through King's catalog, but weirdly the audio edition of Night Shift is missing a few stories so I had to get the physical book as well. I'm very curious as to why; it's gotta be an issue with rights. Anyway, this collection is mostly great with a few forgettable stories. The Mangler is my absolute fave; I love that bizarre little story so much!

I spent tonight finishing the books I started in the last few days. I don‘t think I‘m ever really disappointed with a Stephen King book. This one was very good. Some stories, I didn‘t love, but some will be giving me nightmares, I‘m sure. The Mangler definitely got me already! I do tend to like King‘s novels a bit more than his short fiction because you can really immerse into the story. Even so, I loved this one all the same. #newyearwhodis

Hestapleton Yes I felt this way about the collection too. The bad ones are bad, but the good stories are REALLY good. Glad you liked it!! 11mo

Really love Stephen King's short stories.... Many of these end with a similar feeling of dread combined with hope for what is to follow after the story ends. Some wonderful pieces here and a couple e.g. The Lawnmower Man that I found downright bizarre.

Also fills the Day 11 prompt for #Gratitude30 as this was a #gift from the lovely @TrishB 😘😘

There are four shorts not included in the audio edition but that you can find in the print edition: “I am the Doorway,” “Trucks,” “Children of the Corn,” and “One for the Road.” The last is of particular interest as it‘s set in the Jerusalem‘s Lot universe and is closely related to the novel, ‘‘Salem‘s Lot‘

Whether you find the stories sublime, hokey, or lame, there‘s no denying that all the elements of the short are present and well-crafted.

Mariposa_Bookworm This is my favorite collection of his short stories! 13mo

🎧 The audio collection of Night Shift stories ranges from the horrific (“Jerusalem‘s Lot”) to the sad (“The Last Rung in the Ladder”) in tenor and from the artful and sublime to the corny/lame (“The Lawnmower Man,” “The Mangler”) and John Glover rises to the occasion in each, his performance style sometimes echoing Rod Sterling, other times Maine locals. Dated stories (‘Night Shift‘ was pubbed in 1976) but each short was well crafted.

🎧 What I want to draw attention to here is the label, “An Unabridged Production” which in 1994 when this audio was produced may have been true. But it is worth noting that the audio does NOT contain four shorts that are in the 2011 MMPB: “I am the Doorway,” “Trucks,” “Children of the Corn,” and “One for the Road.” You need both the print & audio to get the whole N.S. anthology

🎧 Every October for the past few years, I‘ve made it a thing to listen to one of Stephen King‘s novels in audio. I was all set to start listening to ‘The Long Walk‘ (narrated by Kirby Heyborne) when I saw this at the library! It‘s only 16 out of the 20 shorts in the print version so I got a MM/PB copy too. As with any short story collection, I only read one a day/night so this should take me up close to Halloween 🎃

Stephen King writes some of the best short stories. They always make me pause and think. My favorites in this book are Quitters, Inc. and Children of the Corn.

His books are so scary because they have a hint of truth. Quitting smoking is torture and...have you been to Nebraska? That corn goes on and on and on. Who knows what lurks in there.

CSeydel Sometimes They Come Back is my favorite ... yikes!! 1y

SexyCajun I love Stephen King but I absolutely could not bear this book 🤷🏼‍♀️ sorry. I did read the majority of it I‘m not sure exactly what it really was but the book was horribly boring. 1y
DGRachel @SexyCajun No worries! I‘m learning that King is hit or miss with me. Some of his stuff I love and some of it, I can‘t even finish! 1y
InLibrisVeritas This one was mildly disappointing for me as well. A few of the stories I enjoyed, specifically the Salem's Lot tie ins, but the rest were hit or miss. I finally get the family guy joke of him writing a story about a demonic lamp now, he can make anything into a monster it seems 😂 1y
Karkar I actually liked most of this collection. I liked how many of the stories set up future books. Such as The Stand, Christine. 1y
BookwormAHN I really enjoyed a few of the stories like The Lawnmower Man and Children of the Corn, but a lot of them were rather stupid. 1y
Chrys Stephen King is hit or miss for me as well. I do like most of the stories in this collection, but some of his works I have a hard time getting into. I really liked the stories that tied I to his other works, and also the story Graveyard Shift-though I can‘t explain why i like that one 1y
Eggbeater I had a different experience. I love SK's short stories. He seems to get some of the ideas for his novels from playing around with them. My favorites were Quitters, Inc. because I was a heavy smoker and torturing my family would not have made me quit and Children of the Corn. Obviously CSI didn't exist in the 70s or you wouldn't put a child with his throat slit in the back of you trunk, then go for help! @DGRachel 1y
CSeydel Yeah I kind of felt the opposite about the novel tie ins... I didn‘t love Night Surf, and I thought Jerusalem‘s Lot was kind of tedious. Quitters Inc was everything a short story should be, taut, compelling, and relatable. I found Last Rung on the Ladder unexpectedly tender and heartbreaking. I Know What You Need disappointed me, it started strong but kind of dribbled to a meh conclusion. (edited) 1y
JulAnna I like SK‘s short stories as a rule. He is often criticized for being too wordy, but he is also able to paint detailed, quick pictures with his words. Quitters, Inc is a story that has stuck with me through the years. Graveyard Shift and Last Rung on the Ladder are also two of my favorites. 1y
daena I really enjoyed the collection, but I also have found that reading wise sometimes I am just in the head space for short stories. Quitters, Inc was a fantastic short story. I also really liked The Last Rung on the Latter. I have to say though, The Mangler particularly disturbed me for some reason, which is good. 1y
LauraJ I enjoyed most of the collection and was most disturbed by the stories that involved the horrors set in an every day workplace. @daena The Mangler especially! 1y
trioxin_sematary Great collection of shorts here, Gray Matter being my favourite! ☺ 1y
Scurvygirl Trying to catch up on the #losersclub and I had forgotten how many of these stories had been translated into movies. I am a fan of short stories in general, I love how they leave you guessing or wanting more. Strawberry Spring is well played as is Battleground. Quitters, Inc. is probably one of my favorites, the ending is hilarious. 1y

Mehso-so

I am honestly not sure how I feel about this collection of short stories. Some of then were quite good and others seemed less inspired. I just dont think many of these showcased what King is capable of overall.

As a side note I watched Graveyard Shift on Hulu and I think it was worse than the story despite being longer.

#losersclub

NadineCaine I think this was the first book I ever read from Stephen King when I was about 14 and the two stories that have stuck with me was grey matter and the boogeyman. To this day I can‘t have my closet door open at night because of the boogyman story 😳 But I did enjoy this book a lot 1y
InLibrisVeritas @NadineCaine I have noticed that I am in the minority on this one. Some of the stories are too similar to each other or to other things I have read I guess. I dont scare easily either, I can count one hand every time a book scared me to the point of paranoia or nightmares. 😕I did enjoy Boogyman though! 1y
NadineCaine @InLibrisVeritas for me Stephen king has always been hard to get into so his short stories I did better with. I don‘t like how long he has to go into detail about stuff, I‘ve always thought Robert R McCammon or Dean Koontz were the better authors for the horror genre 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1y

InLibrisVeritas @NadineCaine He can get really long winded 😂 I really like the atmosphere he creates and he is pretty imaginative. I haven't read either of those authors yet, I'll add them to my list to check out! 1y
NadineCaine @InLibrisVeritas He does have amazing concepts and it‘s a shame I have such a hard time with his books, but the ones I have been able to push through I do enjoy.
