It's a classic for a reason & a lot different than what I expected! Riveting, cleverly-constructed Gothic fiction that also works as a mystery. Love the forms of text incorporated into the narrative. Underlying it are issues percolating around womanhood, female sexuality, & fear of Others. One of those interesting novels that is a compelling read despite the author's iffy politics (that was in view in full force in The Lair of the White Worm).

batsy Illustration by John Coulthart. More here http://www.johncoulthart.com/feuilleton/2018/06/01/illustrating-dracula/ Thanks for the buddy read @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm @Sace 🖤🦇 13h

batsy @Cathythoughts Thanks Cathy! Like @Libby1 says it surprised me. Very atmospheric & kind of with a transnational mystery element with the multiple characters & travel, etc. 13h
Cathythoughts Yes, that sounds good .. being surprised! I never knew Bram was short for Abraham ( I heard it on the radio .... must be true 😆 13h
batsy @Cathythoughts Oh, I didn't know that either! Why didn't I think of that ... I was thinking Bram's such a unique name 😂 13h
Cinfhen Beautiful review. I agree this book was a wonderful surprise. BTW: cool tidbit about Bram‘s name @Cathythoughts Abraham makes sense 13h
LauraBeth Always love your reviews. I‘ve never had a desire to read this but you make it sound compelling. 13h
erzascarletbookgasm Wonderful review. 👏 Haven‘t read The Lair and I think Bram Stoker has a nicer ring to it. 😁 13h
Earlene I finished this a couple of weeks ago and Inreally enjoyed it. I especially liked that you got so many facets of the story from different characters. 12h
batsy @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm Thanks for the motivation to read this 😘 11h
batsy @LauraBeth Thank you! I wasn't interested in this before but the Litsy love for it made me reconsider and I'm glad I did 🙂 11h

I'm not going to feel guilty about folding the laundry slowly. It gave me an excuse to keep listening.

I'm thinking I should start reading the book though because I'm at a section that feels a little rambly (Lucy at Whitby and her proposals.) I'm having trouble focusing on the audiobook. @Cinfhen @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm

Cinfhen I did switch back and forth between book & audio but I think the audio was way more compelling 1d
erzascarletbookgasm Yeah perhaps you can alternate between print and audio. 1d
Sace @Cinfhen I love the audio, but I just hit a bit I didn't like as much on audio. I bought the audio with the Kindle edition so luckily it syncs, making switching back and forth very easy. 1d
batsy I read it in print, but I had some trouble sorting out that particular section involving Lucy and her suitors, as well! I had to reread that one letter in particular because I realise that The Guy was not the guy I thought it was 😂 1d

I listened to Dracula on audible and I really enjoyed it. For all the vampire movies and TV shots I've watched I never read the original. This Dracula does not sparkle or fall in love. He's a monster.

It has been an immensely enjoyable, captivating reread. Great descriptions & sense of place; so much suspense, dread, & anxiety throughout. Set in Victorian times, there‘re underlying themes of spiritualism, religion, gender & female sexuality, among others. Towards the end, the ‘chase‘ was so intense and had my heart beating fast! I love that the narratives are from different source of materials - journals, letters, memo, newspaper clippings. 👇

erzascarletbookgasm If you‘ve only watched the various theatrical and film interpretations, you must find time to read this gothic masterpiece. Thanks for reading along @Cinfhen @batsy @Sace 5d

It's a bright & sunny morning, & it's back to spending some time with this toothy fellow & his gang. The upside to being a broke freelancer: a tiny amount of downtime in-between assignments. Hope to read quite a bit of this. I think I was expecting a tawdry horror tale, & while there's plenty of heavy breathing in the relations between vampire & vampiree 😆 it's also layered, complex, & cleverly constructed. @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm @Sace

LeahBergen I must say, it was definitely the clever construction that most impressed me on my adult reread. It surprised me anew. 🖤 6d
Tamra I have yet to read. Confession time. 6d
merelybookish I remember loving how all the different texts (diaries, letters, etc.) are used to tell the story. 6d
See All 20 Comments
batsy @LeahBergen @merelybookish Yes, I love how he uses and incorporates the different texts! And I don't know if it's because contemporary pop culture has managed to make vampires so silly, but in this one there is a visceral, mythic quality to them that's surprising and disconcerting. 6d
batsy @Tamra It's never too late! This is my first time 😁 6d
Tamra @batsy that is enticing! 6d
erzascarletbookgasm Ah, you‘re showing off this edition in its full glory! 😂 I think you‘re right in saying how the modern culture, especially movies and Halloween make vampires less scary compared to the book. 6d
Cinfhen Your blurb about Dracula is so on point🧛‍♂️There was nothing really kitschy here. This was a nuanced story told through journals/ news clippings which I really enjoyed and admired. 6d

rohit-sawant Very cool edition! So true about how well crafted it is with a mythic undertone as opposed to the modern watered down vampires. Joe Hill likened vamps to leeches once, saying there's nothing sexy about that, and I think despite some of the melodrama, Stoker never lost sight of that. 2d
rohit-sawant Also, check out this Epic Rap Battle between Dracula and Vlad the Impaler 😆 Been meaning to share it on Litsy for days now but keep forgetting.

batsy @rohit-sawant Yes, well put! And that Joe Hill comment is spot on. Thank you for that link, it has totally made my day ??? "You're losing so bad you should join Team Jacob" bahahaha! I might be biased; my vote's for toothy Draccy ?? 2d

Wow, this was such an evocative, intensely dark and well rounded story. I can understand how this tome has become a well lauded classic. Having just read Haunting of Hill House, I was curious to go back and read an original Gothic tale. Aside from being a little too winded towards the end , the Audible original full cast recording pushed this book into 4 star status. Thanks to @erzascarletbookgasm @Sace @batsy for reading along with me.

4thhouseontheleft I think I‘m going to reread this next year! It‘s my favorite gothic horror. 7d

Completed the above four books. Almost half way through Dracula. Such a page-turner!

Cinfhen I‘m also amazed at how gripping Dracula is! The writing is so good and the suspense and scare factor is off the charts @batsy @Sace but it‘s a VERY DENSE book. #TeamStoker it's time to have our discussion about our buddy read for the month!!! Here's a couple topics I would like us all to consider:

1. How does the book pit science and reason against superstition and the occult?
2. How do changes in the weather and atmosphere influence your reading experience when it comes to setting the tone?
3. What surprises did you find in this book? Is this your first time reading or a reread?

🌟5pts/comment 🌟

jb72 I‘ve read Dracula about two or three times. I love listening to the version with Tim Curry. 2w
See All 32 Comments
jb72 Personally I think the time of year can influence our reads. It‘s getting darker sooner and with a chill in the air it can certainly make a book feel scarier or more suspenseful. It‘s no different than reading beach reads in the summer to feel relaxed. 2w
Kimberlone This was my second time reading/listening (and I‘m still trying to finish up today!). I really enjoyed it the first time I read it in high school and have been appreciating the reread this month. I love epistolary novels and books with framing devices, and Dracula is definitely one of the best examples of this writing style. 2w
Laughterhp This is the first time I‘ve read Dracula. I‘m glad I‘ve finally gotten a chance to read it. 2w
Laughterhp I definitely think weather can influence your reading. If I tried to read this in May, I probably would have had a different experience. But reading this during the fall where it‘s getting gloomy out, it made the book more atmospheric. 2w
Kimberlone With regards to question #1 I think Stoker does a great job of highlighting the conflict between science/reason and superstition/occult. You have men of learning like Jonathan Harker and Dr. Seward who fight accepting the obviously supernatural things that are happening at first. Then there‘s Van Helsing who is a learned professor but who is also an expert in vampires and the occult. 2w
Kimberlone Mina is my favorite character because she is the one who brings all the threads of the story together into the book by piecing together everyone‘s accounts 2w
Kimberlone #2 the weather outside doesn‘t really impact my mood that much, although I will feel not as guilty about spending a lot of time reading if the weather is nasty. Stoker does a great job of using weather in Dracula to set the tone, though. In particular I am thinking of the terrible storm that Lucy and Mina witness in Whitby that is caused by Dracula‘s arrival 2w
Ericalambbrown It's been at least 30 years since I've read this book. I kept thinking about how the film Bram Stoker's Dracula actually wasn't Bram Stoker's Dracula. 🤣 I found myself thinking a lot about the need film makers have had to romanticize Dracula when he is in no way a good guy. He's basically a devious, immortal serial killer. (edited) 2w
IndoorDame I read a piece of commentary that really struck me which said that this novel was really revolutionary for its time, in its portrayal of science/vs. the occult (and feminist) because the men can‘t succeed without Mina, the count can‘t advance his interests without embracing modern technology, and the scientists can‘t defeat him without accepting some of the supernatural rituals 2w
IndoorDame I always get drawn deeper into a story if the weather outside in some way mirrors the weather or tone in what I‘m reading. This isn‘t the first time I‘ve read Dracula, and I‘m pretty sure the first time was in the winter because I think I of It as a winter novel, and all the elements that make it one probably wouldn‘t be as prominent in my memory I if it hadn‘t been cold and stormy outside while I was reading it. 2w
Ericalambbrown @Kimberlone Same, re: Mina being your fave character. And she‘s not just decorative either. The other characters sometimes treat her as if she is but the story doesn‘t. 2w
JacqMac I love this story, but it‘s the first time I have actually read it. I don‘t know why I put it off for so long. 2w
JacqMac I always read more when the weather is icky. And I‘m always a mood reader. The weather influences my mood and my mood influences what and how much I read. Always. The gloomy days really help with the scary reads. 2w
ElizaMarie This was my first read and I was really surprised I had never read it. I enjoyed cuddling up and reading it late at night with the ability to let my mind wander and get sucked into that world. I loved how important women were in the story. And really enjoyed how it went into the medical procedure of the blood transfusions. It was such a gripping story! (Thanks for marking it our read) 2w
Caroline2 This was my first time reading and I was pleasantly surprised. Although I preferred reading it from Mia‘s perspective then when it kept chopping and changing. 2w
CoffeeCatsBooks I think there is nothing better than reading on a rainy day. It is especially fitting with horror, fairy tales, or dystopian fiction. 2w
CoffeeCatsBooks I‘ve read Dracula at least 3x previously 2w
Chili This was a reread for me. I always picture Dracula looking like Bela Lugosi, so the book‘s description of Dracula just seems wrong to me. 2w
Chili I always tend to read more when the weather gets bad. Especially in the winter when the temperature is below zero. I hibernate with books. I also tend to choose darker books. 2w
Marmie7 This is my 2nd reading. This time I listened to the audible version and enjoyed it much more! OCT is my fav reading month and I tend to get the most reading done during this month. 2w
Skygoddess1 This was my second time reading Dracula. I first read it in college and remember hating it because I found it so slow and I was used to Francis Coppola‘s adaptation. Listening to the story on audio I found I actually enjoyed it a lot more and was even able to picture different scenes from the movie while listening. October is the one month when I primarily focus on reading all things horror themed, so reading Dracula worked for the season. 2w
Skygoddess1 I also loved reading this after finally listening to Carmilla by J. Sheridan ale Fanu, the book that is said to have inspired Bram Stoker in his writing of Dracula. It was fun to do a kind of comparison and contrast between the two. 2w
BookwormAHN I think this book shows how science and reason can't account for everything and that sometimes you should listen to superstitions. 2w
BookwormAHN Atmosphere and weather can definitely help create an intensity or a lightness to a scene. 2w
BookwormAHN This was my second time reading Dracula and it always surprises me how quick Dracula's death is. 2w
Jadams1776 Some of the characters who are deeply ingrained in science and reason have a hard time coming to grips with the supernatural. There are just some things that cannot be explained by science. 2w
Jadams1776 Reading a spooky book on a sunny day just isn‘t the same as reading a spooky book on a dark and dreary day. 2w
Jadams1776 This was a re-read for me, but the first time as an audiobook. I really enjoyed the experience of listening to the story. 2w

However, when it comes to gothic horror, written in the 19th century or older, I‘m all for it! Beware the creepy count who only comes out at night...

Thanks @Cinfhen and @CrowCAH for a fun month! 🧡🖤🧡🖤

Cinfhen I‘m listening to the audio now and it‘s BLOODY FANTASTIC ♥️🖤🧛‍♂️thanks for posting and sharing all month 🙌🏻 2w

Is anyone else excited to see if this version can do better than the last (at least the Gary Oldman version, which was terrible)? Here‘s a link to this article: https://apple.news/AnSeHUMFHOXmFk25NkzVRKw

I keep hoping to see a movie made of The Historian, my fave Dracula story next to Stoker of course

Sace I saw the trailer, but it didn't move me. I haven't read the book. I have started it for a read along with @Cinfhen though. Personally I'm attached to the Bela Lugosi/Carlos Villar/Lupita Tover 1931 versions. 😊 2w

Cinfhen I‘ve never seen any film and this is my first time reading @Sace I‘m really loving the audio (edited) 2w

Enjoying this atmospheric tale with a delicious cup of David‘s organic serenity tea compliments of the fabulous @LeahBergen ( today‘s birthday girl 💓🎂💋) Having read Haunting of Hill House earlier this month, I think I‘m already more engrossed with Bram Stoker‘s story. It‘s the right kind of creepy😱This would work for #Booked2019 #PublicDomain and is available for free on @SerialReader

Sace I just got this yesterday! 2w
Cinfhen I‘m doing a very informal buddy read with @erzascarletbookgasm + @batsy starting today and going through November @Sace jump in and join us!!! It‘s a first time read for myself & @batsy 2w

Trailer looks terrifying! 😱

The BBC has released the first trailer for its new adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, which comes from the makers of Sherlock.

batsy @erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen We can do it in November if you guys want :) 2w
Cinfhen Let me know what works for you guys @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Do u want to break it up or just read at our own pace?? I‘m gonna use serial app but I can access unlimited pages each day so it‘s not a problem. I might try some audio too 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2w
batsy @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm I'm pretty sure I have a copy! That I now can't find 🤦🏽‍♀️ My search will continue but I'm cool with a lowgkey read at our own pace. We can tag each other whenever we want to comment or discuss? 2w
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m fine with Nov. I just looked at the contents page of my copy, there‘re no sections or parts, so reading at our own pace sounds good. @batsy @Cinfhen 👍 🦇 🧛‍♂️ 2w
ravenlee Dracula is one of my favorite books! But I always have trouble getting started. Epistolary novels are always tough for me. 2w

As I‘ve said before, I got scared of this book as a kid & only read the first part. Remember going w/ friends to see the movie as a teen & was a little scared but ok enough to see it again. But, I didn‘t remember much about it other than the actors. I‘m glad I read the book because now I understand all the pop culture references, esp Van Helsing. I felt it dragged toward the end-a lot of planning & ten min of actual excitement. @Clwojick

Scochrane26 Also, Mina is a badass. #scarathlon #teamslaughter which makes this a non-theme book. #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft 2w

This hasn‘t been the best day. Drove 2+ hrs to see my friend‘s kids in marching band. It‘s very rainy and windy today, making it difficult for all the bands. The kids‘ band didn‘t make state finals. They normally do, so I had decided to stay at a hotel instead of driving very late tonight. They got 5th, missed finals by one spot. They didn‘t stay to watch, & it was raining so much, I decided to stay in my already paid for room.

Scochrane26 And Dracula has been slow going today. It‘s been almost 3 hours of planning, can they just kill him already? @Clwojick #scarathlon 2w

Can‘t believe I had never read this. I‘m glad I did but found it a tad slow at times. Split my time between reading and the audio book. Love Alan Cummings so found it very well read.

TheReadingMermaid I'm so glad that you liked it sweetie. It deserves its classic status. And I do agree with you it is a bit slow at times butI also think that that's its age and the time that it was written. All in all a very very good read. 🧟‍♀️ 2w

The epistolary style of the novel lends a verisimilitude to the story that increases the excitement of the mystery surrounding Dracula and the chase/hunt for the fiend.

I actually really liked this book. I read 2 classics this month and I think I‘ll make a goal of next year to read a classic a month.

I enjoyed this adventure and at the end, I was at the edge of my seat and didn‘t want to put the book down.
When I was a kid I slept with my blanket covering my neck in case of vampires. I felt like that again when reading this.

Even though I‘m #teamslaughter, I had my heart set on reading Dracula this October so I just listened to it this weekend during our epic road trip. Not terribly scary, but a more layered and developed story than I had anticipated! Really quite a good read and Simon Vance is always an amazing narrator. 5pts (I think) #scarathlon #bbrc #growup #freezerbook #readmyowndamnbooks
