Clare-Dragonfly I was not expecting what happened in this chapter either!!! For several paragraphs I was convinced it was a misunderstanding and that the Captain had surely escaped the train 😅 I also thought the story would go on for much longer. Maybe this book will be more of a series of vignettes. We know so little about the narrator that I can‘t see her having an arc through the novel. 12mo

AnnR This was a horribly disturbing chapter, first with the birds, then with the attitude of the “adults.“ I actually cheered then Agnes got fired; not that she deserved it in any way, shape or form. My thought was she was too responsible to quit & it was good she got out of that situation before something really horrible happened. No governess could help those kids, between the lack of discipline & constant interference of the parents. #firetheparents 13mo
