"Art will wake you up. Art will break your heart. There will be glorious days. If you want eternity you must be fearless." --from The Museum of Modern Love Arky Levin has reached a dead end. Unexpectedly separated from his wife, he suddenly has the space he needs to work composing film scores--but none of the peace of mind he needs to create. As he wanders the city, guilty and restless, it's almost by chance that he stumbles upon an exhibition that will change his life. The installation the fictional Arky discovers--which is based on a real piece of performance art that took place in 2010--is inexplicably powerful. Visitors to the Museum of Modern Art sit across a table from the performance artist Marina Abramovic, for as short or long a period as they choose. Although some go in skeptical, almost all leave moved. And the participants are not the only ones to find themselves changed by this unusual experience: Arky finds himself drawn to the exhibit. He returns day after day to watch other people sit with Abramovic--and as he does, he begins to understand what might be missing in his life and what he must do.

This novel, set during a real art show, isn't what I expected. Initially I was disappointed in the writing, the occasional narrator that must be art personified??!, and the style of modern art this book glorifies. However, I became interested in the career of Abramovic and felt moved by her exhibit. This book made me think about art's role in how we interact with others, the world, even death. It will stick with me, and that is worthwhile

It has to be a good book when the subject of the story praises it and it really is. It is more character driven than plot driven, it‘s right up my alley. It follows different fictional spectators‘ lives of Marina Abramović‘s performance art piece at the MOMA back in 2010. It covers the power of art on humans, love, regret, friendship, relationships, and also bringing in aspects of Abramović‘s personal life mixed in. I really enjoyed it.

Well, the trip was worth it. My dad has a car!! I was hoping to get a picture of him with it, but it rained all day, so here are the dealer pictures!! 😂😂😂 Many of us, Dad and me included, love all the new, modern tech in our cars!

Home safe but exhausted. It wasn‘t a good #BFC day because of all the eating out, but I‘m nearly done with The Mastermind #audiobook @Cinfhen 👍🏻

Cinfhen 71 is sooooo young!!!!! It‘s odder to think a new car might actually last 20 years 😜😜😜 6mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I don‘t particularly think he‘s old at 71. He‘s mentally fine (thank God) and can still lift 130 lbs, walk 3 miles easily, and stand all day working the election polls (his dream in retirement was to be a poll worker 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️). He‘s amazing! I expect he‘ll outlive the car, but I don‘t want to shatter his illusions. 😉😉☺️ 6mo

It took me three tries to get into this one - audiobook, ebook and paper. I persevered and I‘m glad I did. The book has a kind of shapelessness to it with Abramovic‘s The Artist is Present at its heart. I felt more connected to the resolution of Jane‘s storyline than I did to Arky‘s. I feel like the book didn‘t demand enough of him to put him in league with formidable women.

A lot of performance art is just plain weird. I‘ve had to stop and look things up many times while reading this novel. Stelarc‘s ear in the arm is among the most grotesque. View at your own risk: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiBsJCepLLgAhWE1FkKHfRj...

Finished Hulse‘s The Adults (so fun — very much in the vein of Lianne Moriarty), so I‘m now reading another of my library books that‘s due in a few days. Of course, I had to stop and look up those Antony Gormley statues (https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2010/mar/10/antony-gormley-new-...) — interesting to know that the Marina Abramovic performance at MOMA was going on while these statues were all over NYC.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. There was a lot of insightfulness about art, it's creation and audience responses to it, but I felt that it was a bit let down by some rather overblown and really quite pretentious elements. The author was trying a bit too hard, I think. A shame, because it could have been a really great novel. I liked the principal story, although I thought the way it ended was a bit pat. #LMPBC #GroupX #ozfiction

I loved this novel and was absolutely fascinated by Marina Abramovich. It helped that I was in New York while reading it (though ran out of time to visit MOMA). My one criticism is that a few of the perspectives really lost the momentum that had been built particularly when the character Jane receded into the background.

CarolynM I'm about to start this one for #LMPBC. Looking forward to it 🙂 It would be good to read it in NYC. How is the trip going? 10mo
Joanne1 @CarolynM I think you‘ll enjoy it. I‘d recommend a quick trip to NYC while you‘re reading it, but stay longer than two days! The trip is amazing, it‘s a study tour so I‘ve been going to classes and other site visits as well as regular sightseeing. 10mo

#MyFirstReadOf2019 This was an unexpected book but in a truly wonderful way. Based on real life performance artist Marina Abramovic, the novel focuses on the 78 days Mariana sat on a wood chair at the MoMA and asked others to sit and engage with her, one on one in TOTAL SILENCE. Heather Rose has created her own performance piece with this novel. https://youtu.be/5R8kL3k4fd0 Not sure how I will use this for challenges but rest assured I will 😉

Wonderful story exploring the rigors of true commitment as it relates to love, grief, art, and the human longing for connection. Based around real events, the reader glimpses the lives of some characters who have come to see Marina Abramovic‘s ‘The Artist is Present‘ at MoMA. A delightfully thought-provoking, meditative read. Loved this book that takes place around the 2010 Performance Art installation by Marina Abramović at the MoMa in NYC. The artist gave the novelist permission to use her as a character in the novel and the framework of her art as the skeleton of the story makes the novel sing.

The author starts with the event of Marina Abramovic's The Artist is Present at MOMA and explores the artist herself. The rest of the novel is made up of the lives of the people drawn to the art. Nothing much happens, and I loved it. Through the various character the author is able to explore what draws people to art (both observing and creating,) selfishness vs connection, and what remains.

I loved this. Inspired by, & honours, Marina Abramovic‘s ‘The Artist is Present‘. This book is why I love reading: characters I enjoy spending time with (despite Arky being unlikeable), beautiful writing & it made me think. The premise sounds intense but Rose treats it w a light touch & friendly tone - it‘s a delight to read - with also a deep respect for the work. She captures the humanity of the work: an inclusive experience & mix of people. ❤️

This book is centered around Marina Abramovic‘s “The Artist is Present” where for 3 months at the MOMA she would sit across from anyone who chose to participate and silently stare into their eyes. The characters in this book are each drawn to this exhibit for their own reasons as they forge connections with each other. There is a lot about what defines art and what the role of art is within modern life. This was such a unique book and I loved it.

I found this book and the performance art discussed absolutely fasinating. I couldn't wait to hear what was going to happen next and had a growing affection for the characters, this was in some cases because of their flaws. I had a very clear image of place and the people, which turned out to be wrong in the case of Abramovic. It would have been amazing to sit in the Atrium of MoMA and witness the performance.
