Pickpick

Although written and set in 1990‘s Australia, this felt older. Women pondering their lives, separate from men.

It‘s interesting to me that I seem to be reading a lot in this space lately. Life mirroring art mirroring life 🤔?

I am happy to have now read something by Drusilla Modjeska. #ozfiction

Well this has just taken a turn. I am halfway through this 2023 Miles Franklin prize winning novel. The Miles Franklin is an award for books depicting Australian life. I was reading this one, wondering whether it even meets the criteria given it is about a nursing home of Sri Lankin expats. But wow, I now see it is very much about Australia. What a fascinating connection the author has made. Now, back to it…🤓📖.

Jeg I heard her on the radio talking about this book. I‘ll get around to reading it I‘m sure. I love that bun. Makes me feel a little sad. As you know I lost my taste and smell for a year. I still can‘t taste or smell cinnamon which is one of my all time favourites. 🥲. 1mo
MrsMalaprop @jeg Just finished reading it. The cinnamon scroll is from our local IGA & they are so good. It‘s very sad you can no longer appreciate cinnamon. It‘s one of my faves. Maybe your taste & smell will return. Here‘s hoping 🤞. 1mo

If you‘d asked me to say which book on the Miles shortlist was least likely to win I think I would have nominated this one. Got that wrong, then. Looking forward to reading it. #ozfiction

LeeRHarry I would have said that too. 2mo
julesG It looked the most interesting to me when I saw the list. 2mo
CarolynM @LeeRHarry I fully expected Limberlost to win 2mo

CarolynM @julesG It does look interesting. They usually go for more obviously “serious” books. 2mo
MrsMalaprop Just got myself a copy 😊 2mo
Rissreads Yep I‘ll be buying it next time I get to a book shop. I hope it‘s fantastic as I loved Limberlost. 2mo

#ozfiction This book has been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin literary award. Set in Tasmania, it follows the life of Ned growing up on an orchard, Limberlost. His mother has died & his two older brothers are away at war. Ned hunts rabbits to make money.
My dad grew up in rural Victoria & earnt pocket money ‘rabbiting‘ as a teenager. As kids my siblings and I went rabbiting with him.
I really enjoyed this beautifully written book.
🐇 🍎🌳🙏

Tamra This sounds really good - I wish I could access Aussie books more easily. It seems to take awhile to be published in the US. (edited) 3mo
MrsMalaprop @Tamra I love showcasing Australian fiction on Litsy, but hear how tough it is to get hold of books elsewhere in the world, especially now that BD is gone. If you are really keen on a particular book let me know. I can source and send it to you 😊. 3mo
Rissreads This was fabulous! Well deserved to win The Miles Franklin award 👏🏻♥️ 3mo

MrsMalaprop Hasn‘t won yet @Rissreads. Announced 25 July. 3mo
CarolynM One of my book group friends loved this, but she also loved The Rain Heron and that really was not my cup of tea. It‘s an interesting short list for the Miles this year. I loved Cold Enough For Snow and there are a couple of others I want to read. 3mo
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM I haven‘t read any of the others. I believe they are all debut authors. 3mo
Tamra @MrsMalaprop there are so many good ones! I did see this was available via Amazon and I haven‘t tried Blackwells yet. Thank you! 💜 3mo
Rissreads @CarolynM I enjoyed this a lot more than cold enough for snow. This is Arnott‘s first novel without magic realism so maybe you would enjoy this one more? I enjoyed Flames but haven‘t read Rain Herron yet. 3mo

Pickpick

A delightful cosy mystery revolving around a group of tea ladies working in the rag trade in early 1960s Sydney. Lovely characters, some fun stuff about the fashions of the time and a satisfying mystery. I hope it becomes a series. #ozfiction

#Ozfiction 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎
I devoured this book and the story of Ned growing up in Tasmania on an apple orchard. The descriptions of the land, water and animals were divine. This passage really spoke to me as I too sometimes feel like this.
Ned was thirty. When would the natural competence of other men come to him? He knew he had worth. Knew he had qualities that were of value…..But he longed to be more surefooted, for his adult self ⬇️

Rissreads to be more resolved. To be a person who was complete. 3mo

I found this dull and slow, it just didn‘t make me feel anything.

#WeeklyForecast

I want to finish Flames. I want to read August Blue and hopefully start From the Wreck. This might be a little too ambitious since I have plans this week.

I also want to continue with my audio, but I have seems to have trouble with that.

There also seems to be a blue cover theme at the moment.

Cinfhen All your titles have peaked my interest 🤩 4mo
Tineke You can make a nice little poem with the titles: August blue: To the river. Flames, from the wreck 4mo

sarahbarnes Great looking stack! I hadn‘t heard of this book by Laing but I love Woolf and am now very intrigued! I‘m going to investigate a few of these! 4mo

Pickpick

Death is omnipresent in the lives of the Billymil family, 3 generations of Aboriginals who live at the end of a settlers town, in the so called Campgrounds. Ancestral spirits watch the family and try to help them.
This is not easy in a place where race relations are fraught, and where rapid social and environmental changes have a lasting impact.
It‘s a sad read but I learned a lot about indigenous traditions and am glad for that.

BarbaraBB Thanks for sending me this beautiful book @CarolynM , I was deeply touched by it. 4mo

The dialogue in the first half of this book was so funny I had to put it down every few pages to regather myself. The second half had some funny moments, but was more concerned with finishing off the story which it did quite satisfactorily. If political satire is your thing I recommend it. #ozfiction
