I'm not really into Rosie's sense of humour, but I would recommend the podcast 'Mum says my memoir is a lie' to hear Rosie and Lisa (her mother) talk about Rosie's claims.

Thanks for a great round, girls!

I really enjoyed this take on Cinderella - my inner geek was fangirling quite hard most of the time. But there was one huge flaw that I couldn't look past - the plot centres on Elle's stepmother selling her father's house, but it says explicitly that the stepmother holds the house on trust for Elle until she is an adult. Which means she can't just sell it - that's not how trusts work! This kind of ruined the story for me...

Cinfhen Are you an attorney??? 😉😂that point would annoy my hubby too!! Although I‘ve heard this retelling is actually really fun 4d
Sarz @Cinfhen Haha, I am 🙊 I'm pretty insufferable when they don't get it right! It is a GREAT story, once you get past the fact that it's entirely basis is legally incorrect 🤣 4d

I love the concept behind this book: Women can only speak 100 words per day and they must wear a bracelet that administers an electronic shock if they exceed 100 words. What a horrible idea!!

However, I found the story a little bit lacking. After a strong start, it sort of got a bit lost. I wasn't surprised to read that it was originally a short story that was made into a novel.

Nevertheless, recommend if you're into dystopian future!

I remember Northanger Abbey as being my favourite story by Jane Austen when I read the works 15+ years ago. That, and the fact that it's the shortest novel, made me choose it as my #publicdomain pick for #booked2019. I still enjoy it - it's pretty funny and I love the sarcasm throughout. Happy to be able to combine the physical book with the audiobook though - this is huge!

Wow 😍 If you get the chance to pick up this book, please do. Don't be frightened by its size. It is an absolutely beautiful first novel by a talented Zambian writer. I adored it! Like Gyasi's Homecoming, it tells the story of three generations of three families connected to the British settlement in Rhodesia, known as Old Drift. It is beautiful, it is powerful - it took me 6 weeks to read because I wanted to savour it.

The one's alright - the story and the writing are pretty good, but I wouldn't say it was outstanding. However I absolutely LOVED it! It was obviously what I needed at the time. I laughed and I cried and I really felt things. I also loved the ending (not the epilogue); it felt real and appropriate. A different version of happily ever after. I know I'll read this again in the future.

Tricky to review this one because obviously the author has passed away and it was written while he was terminally ill. But it wasn't what I expected at all. I enjoyed the parts that were about his illness, diagnosis and treatment, but there wasn't enough about that. The parts that were about his broader life were so full of unchecked privilege that it was hard to get through.

I really enjoyed this. I liked her blunt, no-frills discussion of death and bodies. I relate to that; I don't care what happens to my body after I die, I'm very keen on organ donation and I'd like to contribute to science in whatever way. But that's not for everyone, so exercise caution before jumping in.

Something that did annoy me was that I thought it got a little bit preachy towards the end. It went from 'funny' to 'agenda driven'.

I didn't really enjoy this one at all. It wasn't for me. Some parts were good, but mostly I felt like I was listening to a whiney white girl. I also didn't find it funny at all. Not for me. I love a retelling but this didn't feel like there was enough original content for me. P&P is close to my heart, but I felt like I cringed my way through this. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters and Zuri was just horrible - her 'prejudice' went beyond being judgemental to telling everyone what their identity should be and how they should express it.

Firstly, don't listen to the audiobook - the short chapters, emails, etc don't really work well.
I think I liked the writing, but didn't like the story. Surprisingly, I didn't see the twist coming. I hoped that that was going to make it so much better, but the consequences just weren't there.
I've rated it a pick, but it's really close to a so-so for me.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't know who Trevor Noah was when I picked this up - I had just heard so many good things about this book that I wanted to read it. I really enjoyed it!! I liked the writing style and the storytelling. My biggest complaint is that it's clearly written for an American audience - I didn't need all the explanations and reference to the US and American culture.
⬇️⬇️⬇️

Sarz I understood what was going on without all that and it just frustrated me. And I don't think that's just because I've been to South Africa a few times but never North America. I was also put off by his completely unapologetic tone when talking about some really horrible things that he had done in his youth. I get that he was probably trying to show that his experiences were really different but it felt like a lack of insight to me. 2mo

Ugh, what a waste of my Sunday morning lie-in. DNF'd at 25%

I borrowed this from the library because it looked cool. Then I read some bad reviews. They were not wrong!

This book is just horrible. It's sexist, misogynist and the amount of slut shaming is beyond belief. It's also homophobic and ableist - who know a book could be so many disgusting things!

More complaints below
⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️

Sarz It's meant to be about comics and superheroes, but it's just offensive to geek/nerd culture. 3mo
Sarz Also, taking and distributing explicit images without consent is SEXUAL ASSAULT! It doesn't matter who it's done by. I bailed before the revenge porn by the male love interest. But when the supposed 'friend' taking and sending a 'sexy pic' is played off as just a normal teen embarrassment, I had to literally throw this aside. No thanks! 3mo

Wow, this is amazing!!
Not what I expected (I somehow thought it was about a family held captive by a violent man) but SO much better.
Post-apocalyptic dystopian future is completely my thing, and this one was so well done!
I did have a bit of a panic attack in the scene where Mallorie and Victor are in the bar. No thank you!
But one of my favourite reads of 2019 so far!

I haven't seen the Netflix film and probably won't- this was too good.
