152 posts | 79 read | 4 reading | 188 to read
A heartfelt comedy of manners for readers of Seating Arrangements and Crazy Rich Asians, Diksha Basu's debut novel unfolds the story of a family discovering what it means to be nouveau riche in modern India. Hilarious and wise, The Windfall illuminates with warmth and charm the precariousness of social status, the fragility of pride, and, above all, the human drive to build and share a home. Even the rich, it turns out, need to belong somewhere.

I did not enjoy this at all. Mr. Jha is obnoxious, with his need to brag to everyone about his new wealth, & then his need to compete with his new neighbor about which of them had the more worthless son. I thought this would be a light, funny read, and it was just...ugh. I don't mind the audiobook narrator, but the story itself was a huge letdown. I only finished because it counts for MountTBR and I didn't want to bail on another book this month.

This is a story of traditional family and a modern son. This middle class family from India suddenly has an enormous amount of money and their life quickly changes. It started off really strong, but then quickly lost its luster.

Ok, Litsy. I need your help!

I have a few weeks before I start the second round of revisions on my thesis, so I need some help choosing a book. From top left: a historical romance, a travel/food memoir, Fiction about an Indian family who suddenly make it rich (supposed to be super funny), and a guide to getting jobs after a PhD.

Any help is appreciated!📚❤️

I honestly had such a hard time getting into this book, but I finally got invested in the characters about half way through. I was dying to get back go my book in between classes to see what happened with Reema and Upen, Rupak and Elizabeth, and Mr. Jha with the freaking ceiling and his couch. 😅

This really is a good book once you get into it. I'd recommend it!

Finally making some progress on Windfall! This book is witty and charming, and I'm really enjoying it.

P.s. that coffee warmer is life changing. I used to literally reheat the same cup of coffee into oblivion. 😅☕

wordslinger42 I need that coffee warmer! I like to drink my coffee slowly & I always end up making a dozen trips to the microwave 😂 13mo
callielafleur I had a coffee warmer back in college (15ish years ago) and I found that it changed the flavor of the coffee somehow- almost gave it a plastic-y flavor. I would love to find one where that wasn't the case! I'm guessing the technology has improved since then. 13mo
Rachel.Rencher @wordslinger42 It's like $10 on Amazon! Fair warning though, the picture makes it look like its cordless, but it's not. But yeah, no more microwave trips for me 🤣 13mo

Mr Anil Jha sells his website and becomes very rich overnight. He and his wife move from a middleclass apartment to a villa in a rich neighbourhood in Delhi. Everyone is judging them: the former neighbours as well as the new ones. Trying to fit in is not easy and leads to some funny situations. More than funny I found the novel charming and sweet.

Thanks for sending me this one, Cindy. I really enjoyed it and love that I have a BOTM edition! 💜

Started The Windfall today! I subbed an 8th grade heath class, and was reading while the students worked on packets. It was sex ed week, and so naturally all of the 14 year old boys had to ask me highly inappropriate questions (stuff that definitely was not in their packet) while I was reading. So, I may have to read the first chapter over again because I'm not sure what's going on. 😂

Bklover Oh, how do you keep a straight face?!😂😂 13mo
Rachel.Rencher @Bklover I tried so hard for so long, but they asked this one question that I won't repeat, and I said "That sounds like something that Jerry Springer would need to sort out", and I just couldn't hold it in any longer. ?? 13mo

Meh. I've heard this compared to Crazy Rich Asians since it's kind of rich-people-problems, but it wasn't as fun and absurd. This was a little more serious, with a couple "ha, I see what you're doing there" amusing moments. Best part was side character Mrs. Ray trying to find herself as a young-ish widow.

I found myself only caring about one or two of the characters. I pushed through to see how it would wrap up. I have trouble reading about #richpeopleproblems which is why I DNF Crazy Rich Asians. I can‘t seem to connect to this type of story line shrug 🤷🏾‍♀️

File this under: Things I‘ve Been Doing Instead of Reading “Jane Eyre.” 😅

Recently, I enrolled in a Bollywood/Bhangra class at a local center for World Dance & Music. Tonight was the last session. While there‘s absolutely no way that I don‘t look utterly ridiculous doing the choreography, it was fun to dance again!

Plus, I really dig the meaning behind Bhangra. Details below. 🤗👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: It‘s the dance that farmers in Northern India do at harvest time when there‘s been a good crop. Bhangra is a style that men traditionally have “owned”; it‘s powerful & forceful, with big movements & a ton of positive, unbridled energy. The fact that women have made it their own in more recent years & have claimed that sense of power & joy for themselves is *incredibly* cool & subversive! (edited) 1y
bookandcat I love bhangra! At my college they would do a senior bhangra during their Indian dance and culture festival and any senior in the whole school could participate - so much fun! We also had bhangra classes taught the school gym. So glad you got to do it! 1y

Humor felt forced & the commentary, shallow. I was more interested in the relationship between Rupak & Elizabeth; do fascination & exoticism come together; is it always a bad thing or a normal part of the attraction? I like how this was explored; Rupak understanding he has 'packaged' Elizabeth, projecting his fear by accusing her that he was just exotic for her. Mr. Jha 'adding' to the center of the dome by reaching out (& falling) was symbolic!

I read this for book club & we all felt the same way, which almost never happens; we liked it but nobody loved it.

It‘s one of those books that suffers from too much hype. Everyone‘s praised it as being “so funny” but...it‘s only mildly funny. 🤷‍♀️

It‘s a book about a middle-aged Indian couple who suddenly comes into money, & the pitfalls of trying to “keep up with the Joneses” - or the Chopras, as the case may be. Nothing overly original here.

Anyone else a homebody on the 4th of July? We head out early tomorrow morning to travel to VA, and my daughter has never liked fireworks - sensory issues - so she is cuddling with me until the neighborhood displays nearby are over. 🎆🎇

🛏 👨‍👩‍👧😺😺 🛏 Full bed tonight. 😂

Kaye We don‘t do fireworks anymore. Did them every year with the family all home but now it seems a bit more bother than it‘s worth. Drive all over looking for a parking spot, get out and get chewed up by mosquitoes, sit for 20 minutes to watch fireworks, then wait in a traffic jam for an hour to get home. I‘ve got better stuff to do.. like sit on the couch. 2y
ravenlee We stayed home all day. Not fans of the heat, crowds, or lots of noise. My kiddo was up almost three hours past bedtime last night because of fireworks, and expected again tonight. Some good snuggles though! 2y
Grrlbrarian I‘m not a big fan myself. Love staying home most of the day at least! And I feel terrible for people and animals who can‘t bear the noise. So rough! 😞 2y
See All 14 Comments
AmyG What @Kaye said. I like being home, in the air conditioning, no crowds, watching on TV. 2y
PatienceFortitude Ignoring fireworks, or trying to. The big display is near my neighborhood & sounds right above my roof. Feh! Watching baseball with The Swain instead 2y
4thhouseontheleft @Kaye @ravenlee Our neighborhood has a big HOA pool party which we have gone to in the past, but it is always ridiculously crowded at the pool. Neighbors set off fireworks behind the pool over a pond, but it‘s so dry here, and I‘m not a big fan of large firework displays when it is done without a permit near a bunch of homes (and people), esp. when it has been really dry here recently. 2y
Ashley_Nicoletto I like being home too and I'm also not a fan of fireworks. Hope your daughter is okay. ❤️ 2y
4thhouseontheleft @Ashley_Nicoletto She‘s fine! They used to really bother her, now that she‘s older, she just doesn‘t like them, and gets annoyed until they stop. She‘d rather watch a movie. 😂 2y
CBee What @Kaye said! I also have a child with sensory issues (he is autistic) so we don‘t do fireworks. Also we are just homebodies and can‘t stand crowds 😂 2y
vkois88 Our neighbors have been setting them off all week, but they're going all out tonight... LO has already been woken up 3 times. She went to bed at 8:30-ish. If it's not the fireworks themselves waking her up, it's been the dog barking and freaking out bc he can't handle them. I loathe fireworks. 2y
vkois88 Also, where in VA are you headed? It's where I live 😊 2y
4thhouseontheleft @vkois88 Galax, I have family that live there and in Fries. It‘s a short trip, they‘re only 2 hours away from where I live. 2y

This was so good - funny but deeply introspective and a complete delight. And, it was the final book for my #BOTMbinge this month! Yay! Finally down to a manageable number of unread #BOTM picks.

ElishaLovesBooks This book was great! 2y
emilyhaldi I agree- a complete delight!! ❤️ 2y

~Mr Jha was open to the idea of a white daughter-in-law, as long as she was beautiful. Like one of those Baywatch women.~

😅😅 Mr Jha is such an adorable wannabe... Raring to throw his dollars to keep up with the Chopras and Mukherjees.

Waiting in a queue is a breeze with likeable characters! #nowreading #currentread

Starting to settle in for my #LitsyPartyofOne and #BoutofBooks weekend with my trusty companion. I‘ve woefully neglected Litsy this week though, so time to catch up on all the posts I‘ve missed, post what I‘ve finished this week and then dive into this great stack of books!

Great book to read at the beginning of the year. Funny and insightful. It‘s a good reminder to not assume you know what people think of you. And who cares anyway?!? I have both my puppies and my hubby by me and I couldn‘t be happier on this cold and rainy day 😁😁😁

WanderingBookaneer I just started this! 2y

This is my happiest place. I wish this photo could have shown more. It‘s cold and about to 🌧 and is just the perfect reading day. I have to go back to school tomorrow so I‘m enjoying my last day of freedom 🖤

Set in New Delhi, a middle-aged middle class Indian couple suddenly becomes very wealthy due to the sale of a website. They have an adult son who is in university in Ithaca. How they all navigate this newfound wealth within Indian society is both funny and fascinating. I loved the insight into Indian culture. Lighthearted, but also examines what wealth and money really mean and the importance society places on it.#Booked2018 #unconventionalromance

ElishaLovesBooks @Cinfhen do you think this could be used for unconventional romance? Reema and UPen are supposed to spend the rest of their lives alone. . . 2y
Cinfhen Oooh; I never thought of that?! I‘m not sure how to define “unconventional “ it‘s a tricky word; I‘m from the, it‘s your challenge, define the prompt book as you see fit! No wrong or right choice 2y
Cinfhen Great review! I was just disappointed by the rush ending...it seemed the author just ran out of ideas and ended the book 😬 2y

ElishaLovesBooks @Cinfhen I hear that about the ending- and I would agree! I actually looked after the author‘s note (or whatever it‘s called) to see if there was more after😂😂😂 2y
ElishaLovesBooks @Cinfhen as for the prompt- I‘m a rule follower! But I think I can make a case for unconventional romance since they don‘t follow the conventions of their society! 😊 (edited) 2y
Cinfhen Works for me🤓🤗 2y
