A Ladder to the Sky
A Ladder to the Sky | John Boyne
A psychological drama of cat and mouse, A Ladder to the Sky shows how easy it is to achieve the world if you are prepared to sacrifice your soul. If you look hard enough, you can find stories pretty much anywhere. They don't even have to be your own. Or so would-be writer Maurice Swift decides very early on in his career. A chance encounter in a Berlin hotel with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann gives him an opportunity to ingratiate himself with someone more powerful than him. For Erich is lonely, and he has a story to tell. Whether or not he should do so is another matter entirely. Once Maurice has made his name, he sets off in pursuit of other people's stories. He doesn't care where he finds them - or to whom they belong - as long as they help him rise to the top. Stories will make him famous but they will also make him beg, borrow and steal. They may even make him do worse.

After reading just 2 of his books, Boyne is one of my favorite authors. He has no trouble telling a good story. Imagine Boyne sitting around one day saying, “What‘s the worst thing a writer could do? Right. Steal other people‘s stories! Let‘s play around with that and see what happens.” Reading Ladder is enjoying the fruits of that labor. 4.5 enthusiastic stars

A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne is a Five star read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the most diabolical villains in literature EVER. I‘m just SICK about how all this went down. You‘ve got to pick this book up ASAP! It‘s disgustingly fantastic. 😈
Synopsis is in the comments.⚠️

BookBumming Synopsis;
Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for success. The one thing he doesn't have is talent - but he's not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don't need to be his own.
Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann.
2w
BookBumming He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war. Perfect material for Maurice's first novel.
Once Maurice has had a taste of literary fame, he knows he can stop at nothing in pursuit of that high.
2w
BookBumming Moving from the Amalfi Coast, where he matches wits with Gore Vidal, to Manhattan and London, Maurice hones his talent for deceit and manipulation, preying on the talented and vulnerable in his cold-blooded climb to the top. But the higher he climbs, the further he has to fall.. 2w

I thought since June is “Pride Month🏳️‍🌈” I would read a book featuring some gay main characters. The author John Boyne also wrote The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas which makes this read feel promising. The main reason this book caught my interest was the fact that the central character is not truly a protagonist of this story but mostly the antagonist. explanation in the comments. ⚠️

BookBumming Maurice, a fame hungry aspiring writer but essentially a talentless young man, finds a way to climb to the top of the literary world using a A 66 year old virgin novelist, who grew up in Berlin during the rise of Hitler, even wearing a swastika armband along with his friends as a teen and working as a clerk in one of the army headquarter buildings during the war. 2w
BookBumming I‘m curious to see how this plays out and if Maurice is able to attain AND maintain the notoriety he is desperately seeking.

My “bachelorette week” without Mr. B is coming to a close. So I‘m shifting back to longer books. (And writing a LOT of book reviews!) I finished 5 books (3 under 200 pgs), and 4 short audiobooks and Audible Originals.

This one is finally on Scribd so I‘m going to give a go. I know a lot of you thought the MC was nasty. But...John Boyne...and I can finally finish the #irishauthor prompt for #booked2019!

I don‘t know how John Boyne pulls off a book with a protagonist this unlikeable yet is still a compulsive read. A brilliant characterisation of an evil psychopath. The twist was good and I couldn‘t help but laughed towards the end. Oh Maurice..so despicable..so gloriously despicable! I love this!

suvata @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @twohectobooks I usually give it a 1-star rating on Goodreads and make a notation that I didn‘t finish it. That way, I won‘t accidentally read it again. There have also been times when I gave it another chance after reading others thoughts on it. 4mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's fair, and to each their own. All just personal preferences. I totally get not wanting to waste time on a book you're not feeling. So many book so little time!! 4mo
SharonAlger I stick it out until the end, if I can, because I learn so much about writing, when I do this. Otherwise, if it weren‘t for my writing, I‘d bail a long time before 100 pages. 4mo

4.5/5👏🏻. Boyne never fails to entice the reader and produce a wonderful story. From the first section you are hooked and invested in the characters (even if it is a deep hatred). Each section uses a unique voice and dialogue flow. I also loved the small reference to his previous adult release The Hearts Invisible Furies🥰. Did anyone else catch that? Definitely read!

3.5⭐️ Boyne does a great job at painting a character and writing dialogue. The plot is often a little too coincidental, though. While I loved ‘The Heart‘s Invisible Furies‘, which suffered from similar issues, the lack of insight into the character Maurice Swift in this book made the coincidences less tolerable. Swift‘s motivations seemed very superficial and I think could have been explored more. Overall, though, I enjoyed reading this.

Redheadrambles Glad you enjoyed this one Jerrie. I think overall I liked it better than The Italian Teacher but still that‘s not saying too much ! 4mo

This book is full of devilish, devious drama and I thought it was brilliant, almost perfect. Maurice Swift is possibly the worst villain I‘ve ever come across. Every character was fascinating and every twist got me, every time. Each section starts slowly but you can feel the doom building. It‘s desperately sad and awfully tragic whilst somehow still keeping a humour and lightness to the writing. John Boyne is fast becoming a favourite author.

You will be rooting for misfortune to befall this guy, I promise. Read when you want to rage but also don‘t mind being reminded how unfair life is. Audio was okay.

I‘m hate-reading this book. I cannot believe what an irredeemable parasite Maurice is. WAKE UP, EDITH!!! This is NOT a relaxing read.

whatsthEStorey @RadicalReader that‘s the first I‘ve heard of The One! Sounds like a very original concept. Stacked! 📚 4mo
Crazeedi @whatsthEStorey I've read 2 others by him , and the characters were frustrating in them too, must be a recurring theme in his books 4mo
candority I HATED Maurice more than I‘ve ever hated a character before, but I loved this book! I hope you continuing enjoying it 😊 4mo
wordzie 😁👍 4mo
RadicalReader @whatsthEStorey it‘s also going to be made into a Netflix series premiering about 2020 4mo
whatsthEStorey @Crazeedi when I read The Heart‘s Invisible Furies, I got angry with the MC and had to step away. But I was completely invested in him and loved him, imperfections and all. This guy is just a terrible person. But you should definitely read it & despise him with us! 😉 4mo
whatsthEStorey @candority I‘m in part III now! I don‘t think I‘ve ever liked a book before in which the MC was so unlikeable and not relatable. That is a feat of writing! 4mo
whatsthEStorey @RadicalReader oooooh I think it will make a really good series! 4mo
Crazeedi @whatsthEStorey I'm going to read it! His books definitely engage the emotions! 4mo

Finished my pick for #booked2019 winter - Irish author.

I know. I know. I‘m behind.

I‘ve been in the worst reading slump and started this weeks ago. I picked it up again on a whim this morning and devoured the last 250+ pages. John Boyne is high on the list of my favorite authors after this one.

WanderingBookaneer Are we in Spring already? I thought spring started with the spring equinox! If not, I have to power read through 2 books! 😱 4mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @WanderingBookaneer No, I don‘t think Spring starts til April?! This is just the only one I‘ve completed out of 6. 🤣🤣 4mo
WanderingBookaneer 🤣🤣🤣 Ok. I‘ve done Female Detective: 4mo

Cinfhen Yay for completing the Boyne!!! He‘s soooo good💚 4mo
Cinfhen And you have a WHOLE YEAR to complete the challenge so you‘re totally fine!!!! 4mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @Cinfhen THANK YOU! 4mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @WanderingBookaneer I‘m thinking I‘m going to read the second ACOTR book next for my fairytale retelling OR I chose Into A Drowning Deep for my happy place book because I love the sea and mermaids even if they are killer mermaids. 🤣🤣 4mo
WanderingBookaneer 😂 I‘ve been very specific about my happy place, but you‘ve just made me realize I can chose something broader. 4mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @WanderingBookaneer I kind of used it to choose a book that I‘ve been wanting to read for a long time, but as long as I can justify it right?! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo

Well to say I hate Maurice Swift after the chapter about his wife would be the understatement of all understatements.

Current snow day happenings.

Soubhiville No joke! 4mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @Soubhiville I was just getting more and more irate while reading it. I kept reading pieces out loud and talking about how much I hate him. 🤣🤣 4mo
Soubhiville I told my husband about how awful Maurice was, and he asked why I kept reading it. Morbid curiosity and excellent reading! 4mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @Soubhiville We had the same conversation. I just can‘t stop even though I hate him. 4mo
