Read for #hauntedshelf I didn‘t realize how close to the end I was. I only had a few chapters to go. I had apparently been using an old piece of mail as the bookmark. I started this in early 2015, if it coincides with the mail. A lot of interesting stuff here, just wish it had been put together better. Interesting that in the 100 years since the events police work hasn‘t improved much. :/

I‘m late with this. I think it was supposed to be done in September, but we were moving and everything is wrong with the new place so I haven‘t been able to keep up. Hopefully now. As I moved, I pulled out books I have started and not finished so that‘s my first TBR list.

A very interesting woman and quite an intriguing #history of Grace. Much like the cases she dealt with, her life is filled with mysterious details.
Her life was fascinating and worth getting to know but I did find myself with more questions than answers when I finished.
All in all I'm glad I finished this book.

Not a perfect read for me (not completely sure why either🤷🏻‍♀️) but I still I did enjoy it & recommend it😉

This was an ok read. I thought it was going to be a novel. It was snippets of solved crimes and how they went about solving them.

I'm still processing what I read in this book. I definitely want to read more about Grace Humiston as there are holes I think need to be filled. Overall I enjoyed this and the fact that it read like a novel although nonfiction.

I wanted to love and be absolutely blown away by this book and yet . . . the presentation of this woman‘s undoubtedly fascinating life fell sort of flat. The author clearly spent a lot of time researching the subject matter but the story just felt jumbled with alternating timelines. I would still recommend this since I had no idea who Grace Humiston was before this book but I wasn‘t as wowed as I had hoped to be by the book.

So life has been super hectic and gotten in the way of reading again. But I'm starting this today for book club. I am also still reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand which was last month's book club pick.

If you find historical novels tedious and too ‘real world‘ to deal with at the moment, do not read this book. If you are the mood to read about one of the first female lawyer/detective based in New York in the early 1900‘s who championed for the poor, immigrants and young women during a time when women were not even allowed vote, read this historical book.

I really enjoyed this fascinating book about one of New York‘s greatest female detective and lawyer. For me is was all the more fascinating because my paternal grandparents were alive during this (but they were in Massachusetts not New York) so it was neat to make that connection that maybe they had heard about this story. Grace Humiston‘s contributions to society were almost lost to history if it weren‘t for Brad Ricca! Highly recommend it

Amazing book! This is the absolutely impressive narrative biography of Grace Humiston, one of the most prolific female detectives in history. She broke ground in so many different ways, and Brad Ricca truly does her justice. From her humble beginnings as a nighttime law student to her game changing career in the NYC spotlight, this book covers it all. Plus, there's the added mystery of her tackling one of the most riveting cases of all time.

I started out enjoying this book. Even though it jumped between years with every chapter. The story of Grace who championed women in the early 1900's is worthy of knowing. I just dont think this book did the best job. It became mired down in extraneous paragraphs and things not relevant to Grace's story. I rate it 2.5 .⭐

Here are the books I finished recently, and returned to the library today. Two made a very good impression, and them I reviewed separately. The other two, I must say, only registered as a "meh." With a title like "Mrs. Sherlock Holmes" I expected something more. The first part of the story was engaging. But the end seemed to drag itself out to a thoroughly unremarkable conclusion. Weekend camping read! Quite good, featuring a kick-ass woman lawyer & detective. Interesting to read about these real-life cases going on at turn-of-the-20th-century & parallels to today. Recommended.

While Grace Humiston as a person (kickass lawyer for the people, New York‘s first female consulting detective, advocate for missing girls) is fascinating, this account of her life and biggest cases falls a bit flat. I didn‘t like the time hopping first half, I‘d rather have had a fully linear narrative with an intriguing prologue setting up the Ruth Cruger case instead of the one about Arthur Conan Doyle for no reason.

Beat my sister to the ballpark and she‘s got the tickets so... naturally I‘m killing some time while I wait for her reading on my phone 😂

After seeing the episode of Timeless where the crew meets Grace Humiston, one of the first female detectives in New York, I knew I had to find a book about her! I had never heard of this pioneering woman before but I‘m excited to dig in and learn her real life story as well as the details of the case that made her so famous at the time.

Yesterday was so fun! I picked up a couple new books and a Karen Slaughter ARC (book picture to come - they are still in @Vbrrgirl trunk). Nothing better than books, rosé and friends!!!! #ISupportIndies

This overall is a really good read. If you like true crime and or writing like Eric Larson then this should be added to your TBR list! This was my first piece by Ricca and I was impressed!

1. Finished The Bone Labyrinth and starting Mrs. Sherlock Holmes
2. In fiction it's intelligent thrillers and in non-fiction it's prehistory.

I had a wonderful first day working at the library! Of course it was only about thirty seconds before I checked out my first book! 😁📚

The stack I need to get through tonight. In between looking for a new car 😪 wish I knew more about what to look for, my knowledge is limited to oil and tires haha. Hoping I find something decent soon that‘s not going to go belly up on me in two years like my current car just did 🙄

Found this lovely book at #B&N yesterday. Haven‘t been able to put it down.

Ugh! I feel like this was bait and switch; this book is all over the place and I lost interest....because it felt like the author lost interest.

I was a business teacher but a full time one so this was fun it turned out to be these words.

I had a few incidents in my 34 years as a business teacher, but mostly everyone was happy to learn to type.

This started off so strong. Narrative non fiction about a girl that went missing 100 years ago and the female lawyer turned detective who helped solve the mystery of her disappearance--what's not to love? Unfortunately, the author got so tied up in the story of Grace Humiston, the detective, that the actual story gets forgotten. Almost halfway through I decided I'd rather just google it. Such a shame.
