This May End Badly: A Novel | Samantha Markum
Pickpick

This is a YA novel, so Doe gets a pass for being super selfish in the beginning, but I was glad to see she did struggle with doing the wrong thing. And, the way it was all worked out felt real to me. Sometimes, the guy really is cool and you can just make up without extra drama. And yes, actions have consequences. Minus her single track kind, this was a lot of fun and I love the relationships at play here.

So cute! This is my current fave of this series; Lady Emily is fairly normal and getting a chance to be the real her. Lord Julian is slightly slow, because he‘s a guy, but not too stubborn. And no crazy scenarios. Not in the series please!

I read book 1 and found it enjoyable, but had quibbles. Book 2 however is hilarious! This was such a fun read and really fixed a lot of issues I had with book 1; this time around, my only quibble was that Luke was sooooo down on himself. And that into all part where mom was so unhappy with Callie and the relationship. But the ending was crazy, in a good way. The Date From Hell was much

Burning Pages | Paige Shelton
Pickpick

Paige Shelton hits it out of the park with this one! This one may be the best in the series so far for me; we get a little bit more of Edwin‘s background, a little bit of Rosie‘s, and a whole lot of Hamlet. Add in Wyatt and a wee bit of Elias & Aggie and this is just perfect. Multiple mysteries going on, both current and in the past, that were connected with each other with a surprise ending. So much fun!

Quick read, fun and sexy. Could have been shorter if they cut the needless drama that was too drawn out. Perfect holiday read!

Belle Morte | Bella Higgin
Pickpick

I was a little worried after reading the first chapter that I would hate Renie, but this book was a very pleasant surprise. Yes, she acted as I assumed she would, but she was also quick to realise her faults and when she was wrong. The book didn‘t hold any surprises for me, but it was a fun read; zippy enough to fly right through and filled with fun friends and beautiful clothing. Definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Representation matters and as a Chinese American child of first gen parents, I feel so seen. Also, the story was fun and the twist was both expected and unexpected. Very minor quibbles, but I will say the Chens seem a wee toxic. Hopefully they‘ve changed.

What a fun read! The timeline jumps around a bit and the magical component takes a bit to get used to, mostly because there's no real explanation of the setup, but it's a fast and zippy read that definitely leaves you wanting more books.

Keep slugging through, it really does pickup once you past the 50% mark! Overall this was fun and it enjoyed reading it, but it was definitely an effort. Slow start, but it eventually paid off. Once I passed the halfway mark, the story picked up quickly and it was a pretty fun ending. I was pleased to learn my deductions were correct regarding who the murder was, but the tying up of all the other little stories were quite fun.

First in a new series, with secret staircases and magic! It was quite long, so as to setup a lot of other longer term mysteries, but I‘m intrigued enough to see what book 2 brings.

A Fatal Family Feast | Lynn Cahoon
Pickpick

Lynn Cahoon is one of my fave cozy authors and this is one of my favourite series! This was fun and zipped right along at just the right speed. The Scooby gang is making sure that the groom makes it to his wedding and lots of clue gathering and sharing makes this easy to follow along.

This was a fun read, but I just didn‘t connect with the characters. Also, a lot of lust, but not seeing the falling in love portion.

So much potential wasted! Wanted to love this book, but just too hard. First, January is just so freaking unlikeable for 3/4 of the book; I wanted to feel for her, and I did, but redemption way too long. Second, there was way too much going on and it was a mess; everything that could possibly happen, seemed to happen. Lastly, the ending felt very unsatisfactory. Premise is fantastic and the writing is good! I just wished it had more finesse.

Black Cake | Charmaine Wilkerson
Pickpick

The very first page had me hooked as I wondered why there was Hakka in a book about a story set in the West Indies. often, I'm not a big fan of stories that shift between perspectives or time, but this was extremely well done and I couldn't stop reading until I found out just what had happened. This was a truly satisfying read and I cannot wait to read what she writes next for her sophomore effort.

This was a fun, fluffy read. However, I just couldn‘t quite connect with Kamila; everyone else though? Loved. And this was a solid adaptation of Emma; no ambiguity over who was who.

Brush with Love | Mazey Eddings
Pickpick

This was a faster read than I was expecting! I wasn‘t sure what this was going to be like, but it was surprising. Not a romcom, this deals with some serious emotions in a realistic way. Loved that everyone stood up for what they deserved.

By Any Other Name | Lauren Kate
Panpan

Started this with high hopes that the first few chapters justified, but then it all went downhill from there. She had preconceived notions about what the author should be like and when she turned out to be a he, she flipped out and was really quite unprofessional. And I really just didn‘t understand why it was so bad that the author was a he.

I continue to be impressed with this series, keeps getting better each book. I understand it‘s completely ridiculous they could flip anything that quickly & they things would work out so well for them immediately, but the characters are fun & they continue to bring in new characters while still giving us a little of the old. Mysteries are fun & she doesn‘t do anything too stupid. Still do not understand why we need random chapters from Sawdust.

Meet Me in the Margins | Melissa Ferguson
Pickpick

Cute! I was constantly worried something horribly contrived was going to throw a wrench into the budding relationship, but was very pleasantly surprised that didn‘t occur; we‘re there hiccups? Yes, but not in a Uber drama kind of way and that‘s why I so enjoyed this book.

Live, Local, and Dead | Nikki Knight
Pickpick

This is not your typical cozy mystery, but I really enjoyed reading it! This was very slice of life, with a mystery thrown in and kind of reminded me a bit like Rita Mae Brown books, but with even less sleuthing. The radio station setting was new and the characters and location are fun and interesting. Looking forward to book 2!

A Dash of Death | Michelle Hillen Klump

Some great moments for me, but also some sections where I just couldn‘t help but shake my head. Samantha‘s in a bit of a low place right now, but she‘s trying to work it out when she‘s thrown into a murder and a lawsuit. Having been a reporter, she decides to prove her innocence. She‘s mostly a fairly strong protagonist, but there are moments when the author has her do something a bit out of character, in my opinion, and that just drove me mad.

An interesting read; the detective is unlike any other, with a little the fastidious dressing of Poirot and deductive skills of Holmes. However, some of the plot points don‘t make sense, like why they would conduct interviews in the barbershop with barbers instead of at the station. But, the mysteries were clever and the book was enjoyable.

Where There's a Will | Sulari Gentill
Pickpick

First book in this series, but it was a great intro to the series & the characters; no problems following along with the story & you're only left with a few minor questions about what happened in past books. The mystery was really good, very fast paced & fun, & the historical setting was lovely. Historical tidbits & famous folks & events were nice touches.

Death by the Finish Line | Alexis Morgan
Pickpick

Book 2 in this series for me and I think I enjoyed this one more than the previous one because all the characters seems to have grown; for example, her mom was kind of crazy last book and is much better this book and mysterious military man is less mysterious. The mystery this time around was still interesting, and I definitely did not expect the ending. In hindsight it all makes perfect sense, but didn‘t occur to me at all during the reading.

This series is really hitting its stride, just keeps getting better and better! I love the growth that both women have shown as the series progresses and the mysteries continue to be solved by real detective work. No spoilers, but who knew one murder would lead to everything else. Cannot wait to see what happens next with everyone!

Death in Cornwall | G.M. Malliet
Pickpick

First in this series, but definitely not the last. The whole time I was reading this, I just kept thinking the BBC should do a series! The characters were each unique; there was a lord, fishers, a Michelin starred restaurant, a Hawaiian shirt wearing curate...all such fun. The mystery was intriguing and the conclusion was satisfying. Additionally, our hero and heroine are such a lovely couple and really seem to understand and support each other!

What a twisty, plot; there is so much going on and just when you think it can‘t add anything new, it does. Super convoluted, but not in a bad way; lots going on and you just have to keep following till you get to the end. This was kind of like if Agatha Christie was alive and writing mysteries in the present time.

I really, really, really adore this series; it just keeps getting better and better! The mystery was fun and intriguing, but what I really love is all the talk about the food and the drinks. And the gorgeous descriptions of Ashland. And the bits of Shakespeare. And all the characters. So basics, everything.

Pickpick

My first of this series, but not the first by this author, and it was such fun! I found it a fast read with lots of clues and snooping, and a interesting premise. The yarn but was interesting cause they don‘t actually do much with knitting or crocheting. But I loved the little bits where she was baking, although I do wish there were some recipes. Here‘s hoping those two get it on soon!

This was the first in this series for me, but certainly not the last! The mystery was well done, the relationships just right, and more importantly, it was a mystery they actually solved. Not found the murder by accident, but they came across the murder through clues and detective work. I especially like that our heroine actually works with the law and that the romance portions of this are somewhat realistic.

The premise was promising, but I was never able to connect with the characters (I can‘t really enjoy books where one character is meek and allows others to trample over them for very long). And while the mystery was interesting, the pace was too slow for me; no sense of urgency or any reason for me to need to read just one more chapter.

A Certain Appeal | Vanessa King
Pickpick

I had a hard time getting into the story, but once I made it past the first few chapters, I was hooked! This is such a fun and modern take on Pride and Prejudice; the book didn't go as heavy on the enemies to lovers trope which I appreciated. Also, even though there's not much sex, the story was hot. Vanessa King also did an amazing job writing about burlesque; I cannot wait to read what she writes next!

I really enjoyed book 1 of this series and this does not disappoint! The fun banter between Stella and Nick is fun, the new cast of characters is intriguing, and the mystery was zippy. While I still enjoy almost everything about this series, I have to say that Theodosia‘s attitude these days really annoys me; you are not the police & you do not have to solve a mystery. You are no Miss Marple! But, the mystery was good even though I‘ll miss Miss Drucilla & the food was spot on as always. I do wish we got more info about all the “suspects” though, really just the bare minimum and then Theo huffing about how everyone is a suspect.
