FinIshed the book of Genesis today with the #BibleBuddyRead and I just love the Passion Translation. I can‘t wait until all of the Old Testament is available in this translation! I have everything that‘s available so far. The big aha for me in the reading today is that Joseph was responsible for the Israelites slavery - though it was to save their lives. I never had made that connection before.

quirkyreader MelAnn, so far I am having difficulty with that translation. I know the translator is putting his all into it, still there is something about it I can‘t put my finger on. 7h
MelAnn @quirkyreader everyone has their own preferences … this one is definitely mine! But not everyone agrees and that‘s certainly ok! 4h

Quiet afternoon with my Kindle Oasis, cats (there‘s one in pic - but all 4 are up on my bed with me)… a great book, cozy blankets… I pity the first family member who comes in & tries to disrupt this thing I‘ve got going here 😂

tokorowilliamwallace Yay, someone else has an Oasis! Maybe you could give me some direction or guidance: I've been having some trouble exiting out of a book when reading it. I read the online guide but I don't see the menu features it says performs what I'm wanting. Are you having any issues with menu options and exiting books to the main screen at all? 1w
MelAnn @tokorowilliamwallace yes I won this Oasis and my kindle fire died right before I won it in a drawing a year ago. I love it. There are things I don‘t love about it - nothing in color for one 😂 and certain file types with lots of images don‘t work right on it. 1w
MelAnn @tokorowilliamwallace as far as exiting goes - I have some issues with that - just have to type in the right place up near the top of the page and get it to drop down that top menu to go back to library 1w
See All 6 Comments
MelAnn @tokorowilliamwallace but I agree - it‘s a pain! 1w
tokorowilliamwallace @MelAnn Oh wow, how did you win it? I just saw advertised as on sale for Black Friday and had never seen or heard anyone talk about this iteration of the technology, so I was intrigued and ordered it. I actually do like the muted tones of it; I think it gives it a majestic aesthetic. But that's just me. 1w
tokorowilliamwallace @MelAnn But mostly I got it to kind of nudge or encourage myself to actually read and try to get more focused on reading digitally. I do actually get most of my e-book files for free from various email curators. I joined a digital review last year at the encouragement of a new bookish friend who was doing it, because I wanted to work on improving how I process and articulate my reading experience and reading comprehension in reviews. Didn't work. 1w

MelAnn Expectations exceeded!!!

If I had been highlighting in an actual book, I‘d need new highlighters. There is nugget after glorious golden nugget in this book. I laughed. I cried. I connected with her struggles of the day in day out of being a wife & mom.
2w
MelAnn She said something about burnout forcing her surrender & that is EXACTLY where I‘m at right now. And “I‘m tired and need a nap.” I‘m there, too. Surrender is simple in some ways but scary. The author made this far less scary. 2w
MelAnn I really didn‘t struggle with anything other than I really want a hard copy of this book in my hands! In my personal library. Sometimes I felt like there was some repetition, but it wasn‘t annoying at all. It was weaving an established, familiar thread from earlier in her book to a new one. This was a fantastic experience!
2w

MelAnn What I learned:

That I desperately need to surrender to my overwhelming thirst for God in the stillness & quietness of prayer & I can be assured that God not only will show up, He‘s already there waiting on me… expecting me. .. knowing that I am coming.
2w
MelAnn I have some peace I didn‘t have before over a decision I made recently to walk away from hustle & grind & shut out the noise, heal the burnout and focus only on what God wants in my life through daily adoration. I have affirmation & confirmation & some great motivation and inspiration for doing this in my life starting now. I have no reason to wait. This can be now. This is life changing for me 2w
MelAnn will recommend this to friends and family. I will buy this book as a gift for new brides & new moms. I wish I‘d had this book 15 years ago! I definitely want a hard copy of this book!

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.

I‘ve never been so glad to finish a book in my entire life. My Christmas decor coming down had to wait a day - I wasn‘t picking up this dreadful book again. I made myself finish it so I could be done with it. This book does not deliver anything in the publishers description. It is a biography of Voskamp‘s marriage with all trauma & drama. It time leaps. It throws in Scripture to show she relies on God. But it does not benefit the reader whatsoever

MelAnn I really think Voskamp has an inspiring story of endurance and faith during trials … but she needs a really good editor to create an easier read. .. maybe even a ghost writer! 2w

I‘m wrapping up today‘s reading in the #biblebuddyread I was raised in a household & church where Scripture was important (though legalistically often misapplied to life) I won awards both solo & team for Bible knowledge. I‘ve taught classes since I was in the 9th grade. I was a favorite student. But never have I gone through the Bible start to finish. I am catching so much that I just don‘t remember or have noticed before.

MelAnn I have a sense of humor. It makes my classes I teach fun and interesting. I‘m amused at humanity & I marvel at God‘s interactions with humanity. But as a student some don‘t appreciate my humor 😂 When you grow up in a legalistic culture full of spiritual abuse - you either let the trauma guide you or you choose God to guide you & find a sense of humor. I chose the latter. 2w
SRWCF How fun to discover new things, and I love the approach you chose! You can either laugh or cry in this world, and you choose to laugh. Good on ya! 👊👊👊 2w
MelAnn @SRWCF thank you! 2w

SamanthaMarie Oh my heart is so with you. You have to be able to laugh, that's part of being human right? And do we not think Abraham, Sarah, Noah, etc ever laughed?! There are absurdities in the Bible and I love how on your comment on today's post you imagined God's interaction with Abraham like that of a child. I was in legalistic and fundamentalist Christianity for too long, but I'm happy to be in a much better place with God. 2w
MelAnn @SamanthaMarie kindred spirits :) thank you for your endorsement! 2w
Butterfinger I choose the humor too. 2w

I debated about requesting this book from NetGalley because I find her depressing. Last book of hers I read I got to the end and it was still depressing. So, while I'm hoping this is better; the description reads like it could very well be that same book just rewritten and updated. I hope I don't get to the end of the book & discover I have more hope here now for this book than is delivered. I'm giving Voskamp a chance to redeem herself.

MelAnn So far … I don‘t have much hope for this book. I‘m to chapter 3 and have to find something else to read. Her mental illness oozes through her writing and for an empathic - it‘s draining! Her thoughts are disconnected, random and rambling 2w

Today‘s reading is done - this was the verse that stood out to me today. One of them anyway.

SamanthaMarie Yes! Such a good verse. I love that a few of the esteemed people in these first chapters of the Bible are so esteemed because they walk closely with the Lord (Genesis 5:22-24 regarding Enoch and Genesis 6:9 regarding Noah.) Abram and these others are a beautiful example of the close and trusting relationship God wants with all of us ♡♡ 2w
BookBabe Yes! This is a great verse, and I have to say I really prefer the passion translation on this one. I read it in the CSB and it was all a bunch of pronouns, so I wasn‘t clear on who “he” and “him” were regarding the righteousness. 😅 thanks for clearing that up! 2w
BookBabe @SamanthaMarie amen! So well said. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2w
MelAnn @SamanthaMarie that‘s so interesting because the thought occurred to me that it would be so interesting to do a study on those in the OT who “walked with God” as I was reading through this! 2w

I love the bright colors / photos. Also, the simple instructions. And explanations about what works and what doesn‘t! Easy to follow & understand; and then do!

I didn‘t expect this to be a recipe book like some reviewers seem to have expected. However as I was reading through the book, I kept thinking “Does she have a companion recipe book?” That would be awesome!

#netgalley #freezefresh review continued in comments or on Goodreads

MelAnn What I learned:

That freezing food isn‘t as difficult as my own overthinking led me to believe it would be.
2w
MelAnn I am now way more confident about taking on freezing vegetables and fruits that I never would have considered freezing before! That‘s a big win!

I would definitely recommend this to friends and family & want a hard copy for my own personal chef library!

This got me into a deeper focus on verses that stand out to be as I read my Bible and I think “what do I do with this verse now that God has pointed it out to my heart?”

The only thing I don‘t like is the layout - it‘s backwards w/ no explanation! My OCD says step 1 should be top left & last step, the bottom right. I would love a digital file of this where I could print it the right way. 😂

I love everything else! #christian

Becoming isn‘t easy. Amy Weatherly

Disclosure: I received an ARC via #NetGalley & a member of the book launch team.

Chapter 10 by Amy was my favorite chapter - I highlighted pretty much all of it. This book was a tough read. That‘s about as honest as I can get without breaking down sobbing. Sad tears. Healing tears. Hopeful tears. I will admit - it was tough to give this 5 stars. It deserves it - but this book was hard! Did I mention that?

MelAnn It got extremely confrontational with my own loneliness & held no mercy as it held a mirror up to why that is. I love how raw and humble Amy is. I struggled connecting with Jess in her chapters. They honestly left me feeling worse. She sort of connected with me in chapter 11. 3w
MelAnn But this book dragged out my loneliness and put a spotlight on it. And Jess, often referred to many friends or years of friendships. And then would say how she did it. But she didn‘t ever come across to me as someone who struggled with making friends or being lonely - just someone who‘s got it all figured out which made her difficult to connect to.. 3w
MelAnn Amy, on the other hand, was right there with me so I didn‘t feel so alone as I struggled with some hard hitting realizations. 3w
See All 8 Comments
MelAnn I‘m not going to penalize this book any stars because of the struggles it brought up for me. I think that‘s exactly why it deserves the 5 stars. 3w
MelAnn This holds a treasure trove of great information plus hope that it‘s not too late to create the space you carry with you, put yourself out there, and invite others in. It does not leave you hanging! 3w
MelAnn The only thing I felt like was left out that needed a place in there was a paragraph about what kind of people to invest in. I think it should be noted that it‘s also important to be that kind of person as well. It‘s important enough I don‘t think it should be left unsaid. It‘s the only thing I found lacking aside from my inability to connect with one of the authors. 3w
MelAnn I have preordered a hard copy of the book, plan to get the study guide & host a casual book club that starts with this book. 3w

I received ARC via NetGalley. Scheduled release: January 17, 2022.

“The gospel can accomplish what science cannot.”

I haven‘t read anything from Sam Storms before. This book has incredible timing with what‘s going on in our world right now. This book doesn‘t just tell us that God has dealt with our sin, throws a bunch of verses at you & inspire with unnecessary fluff or feel good anecdotes.

Continued in comments #christian #netgalley

MelAnn This is a soaking experience. Relevant truth from Scripture. Deeper look into the true meaning that anyone can understand. Questions & prayers for further reflection & self discovery. 3w
MelAnn I love that this didn‘t go above any heads. This was an easy read while yet deep diving under the surface. The author clearly is passionate in his desire for the reader to know without a doubt that they are loved and their sin is no more, not because of who the reader is; but who God is. 3w
Mtroiano My pastor quotes Sam Storms all the time. I‘ve been meaning to read something by him! 3w

(received via NetGalley) I LOVE this book! God is the point. We need to be in the Presence of God & He dwells in us.- so He is in our presence as well. God is our where, how, what, why & when (NOW). A new Christian will get so much from it; yet, still challenging to the seasoned Christian.

Last quote block in the book: "Seek first His Presence. Everything will be added." If the book was to be summed up in one paragraph, that would be it!

There are cookie recipes & then there are COOKIE RECIPES! The kind that have your mouth watering by the time you've read through the recipe. In today's world of an Internet full of free recipes, it takes something special in a cookbook for sale - and The Cookie Bible has that "it" factor! I have never been so excited about a cookbook! #arc #netgalley #cookiebible (review continued in comments)

MelAnn I received ARC through NetGalley of this book. I got through the intro with all of the amazing tips for baking great cookies and the first four recipes and immediately went to my amazon and pre-ordered a hard copy of this book. I seriously cannot wait for this hard copy to come out so it can live in my kitchen. 1mo
MelAnn I think anyone who follows the tips and the recipes in this book can become a master cookie baker. I've NEVER seen a baking cookbook with so many specific tips and details to increase the probability of a successful cookie at the end of the process! I love the recipe format in this book, It is so easy to read & understand. We are baking next week & I can tell you that we've got 10 cookies we plan to bake in our holiday baking marathon next week! 1mo
MelAnn I appreciate the details and the author's interest in the reader's cookie-baking success! I highly recommend The Cookie Bible for anyone who enjoys baking cookies no matter what his/her skill level! 1mo
