This was an interesting story about the first #femaledetective in the Pinkerton agency. Great character! I also appreciated the reference to awful Washington summers. 😓

#RedRightHand (actually both hands) on this cover of Girl in Disguise; #historicalfiction about Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton detective, by #litsyauthor @theladygreer Fact: Kate really was responsible for getting Lincoln to his first inauguration, in spite of an assassination plot. Fascinating read and it's only $2.99 today on Kindle! #MayMovieMagic #histfic

3 ⭐️. I enjoyed this novel about Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton agent, and her role as a Pinkerton spy during the Civil War. 3 stars because the writing felt a little lackluster to me...but I‘ve been spoiled by other creatively interpreted historical fiction like Girl Waits with Gun and I Was Anastasia recently. #lmpbc @Kappadeemom I‘ll have this in the mail to you shortly.

minkyb Spot on review! 3mo

I loved this book loosely based on actual events in the life of the first female Pinkerton, Kate Warne. There aren't a lot of solid facts about Warne but the few there are certainly make her highly badass, especially protecting President Lincoln on the way to his inauguration!

If I could be in DC/Arlington on Tuesday, I would most assuredly be at One More Page for a #Halloween treat. So many fun connections between these two books. Kat Lincoln is the master of disguise #detective in Erika's book and President Lincoln was saved from an early assassination attempt by first female Pinkerton detective, Kate Warne, in Greer's. I would get to see both authors, buy #wineandabook, & #chocolate at this charming #indybookstore

Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this quick & entertaining read. The story is loosely based on the life of Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton Detective. From the early days of the Pinkertons in Chicago to the election of Abraham Lincoln & the early years of the Civil War, Macallister imagines what life & work was like for Warne. The historical details aren‘t always accurate & the story is rather shallow, but the book is a fun read.

An interesting look at the first female Pinkerton agent, Macallister weaves nonfiction into her fictional account of Kate Warne. Warne is a strong female figure, taking on a job that really open to women in the US antebellum period. It‘s a shame not much is known historically about Warne. While parts of this were a little slow, the second half of the book really picked up for me, leading to an ending that had me biting my nails!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I really liked this one! 10mo

Tonight at my fave #Bookstore Union Ave in Knoxville, Tennessee at 6 pm, my fave author Greer Macallister reads and signs Girl in Disguise. She brings Kate Warne, first American female detective, to life with fascinating cases, some real (hint: President Lincoln) & some imagined. I needn't have worried about finishing this in time for my first time attending the library's Crime Readers Book Discussion next Wednesday. Between commuting and not sleeping great (hopefully temporary: babyboy moves into his new apartment Monday), I whizzed through it in about 48 hours. I gather that it's based on a real person. I'm looking forward to learning more next week.

Kate Warne was the first female Pinkerton detective and this is her fictionalized story. While I enjoyed the book, I felt it lacked depth. It's quite plot-centric and moves from storyline to storyline at the expense of character development. It does make me curious about the history of the Pinkerton agency.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kate Warne, this book‘s heroine. She‘s a tough cookie who works hard to succeed in a man‘s world. The supporting characters are well fleshed out, and the plot careens along just the way I wanted it to. Wishing for a sequel!

Interesting historical fiction about the first female detective in Chicago before the Civil War. I read Gods of Gotham early this summer and it was interesting to see how early New York and early Chicago share some similarities but a lot of differences too. I always love to learn more about what women were doing during major changes in history!
