The Hopefuls
The Hopefuls: A novel | Jennifer Close
A brilliantly funny novel about ambition and marriage from the best selling author of Girls in White Dresses, The Hopefulstells the story of a young wife who follows her husband and his political dreams to D.C., a city of idealism, gossip, and complicated friendships among young Washington's aspiring elite. When Beth arrives in Washington, D.C., she hates everything about it: the confusing traffic circles, the ubiquitous Ann Taylor suits, the humidity that descends each summer. At dinner parties, guests compare their security clearance levels. They leave their BlackBerrys on the table. They speak in acronyms. And once they realize Beth doesn't work in politics, they smile blandly and turn away. Soon Beth and her husband, Matt, meet a charismatic White House staffer named Jimmy and his wife, Ashleigh, and the four become inseparable, coordinating brunch, birthdays, and long weekends away. But as Jimmy's star rises higher and higher, their friendship--and Beth's relationship with Matt--is threatened by jealousy, competition and rumors. A glorious send-up of young D.C. and a blazingly honest portrait of a marriage, this is the finest work yet by one of our most beloved writers. From the Hardcover edition.

I've been there. I still remember the girl in my first semester Arabic class who said "Even if I didn't already know you were from Iowa, I would have known from those pictures," after I did my presentation about my family. I stopped taking Arabic because the class was full of people like this and I didn't want to spend another three semesters with them. I still regret that I like condescending jerks be the reason I didn't lean a useful language.

Charityann Totally get this - grew up in Indiana and now live on the East Coast. 3y
cornfedwellread @Charityann I grew up in a small town in Iowa then went to NYC for college. It was definitely a culture shock. But I was also surprised how few other states the students from the East Coast had visited. Most of them had only been to NY, NJ, and one or two others, despite the fact that their families took several vacations overseas. I definitely got the impression that most of them didn't think about America beyond their own region. 3y

This book was just ok. I felt it dragged too much in parts and could‘ve been cut down a bit. I did find the characters and their relationships - especially the marriages - felt real and had moments they were relatable. Overall, a bit fluffy and long-winded, unfortunately. 😕

These are just a few of favorite book covers for Day 4 of #readingresolutions - #coverlove ! I like them all separately for different reasons. The Italian Teacher and The Immortalists are colorful; The Hopefuls is effortlessly pretty; the arc of A Place For Us is elegant; and The #arc of When the Lights Go Out is PURPLE 💜 (and I own very few purple books)!! 💜 #TBR

Which cover is your favorite? Have you read any of these?

I enjoyed this but it was not what I expected. This book had been on my tbr since it came out but I considered taking it off recently due to the number of moderate to bad reviews I had seen. The main criticism I saw was that the “characters were unlikable”. I disagree. I saw a couple that was young and still figuring things out under a lot of stress and when people (or jobs) don‘t turn out the way you think they will. It was good, not great.

Love this. It‘s so true. Friendships end and can be just as sad and devastating as a romantic relationship but others don‘t give them the same weight.

AmyG I have mourned the ending of some friendships. Distance has been an issue with some. Mostly it's just growing apart....kids, changing interests. These days....politics. ;) 7y
Conservio I'm mourning a friendship that died :/. It's really been over for years, but it still makes me sad. 7y

I couldn't put this book down! An interesting look at what home is in a town and business where no one is from D.C. And doesn't stay long. Beth longs for a place to belong and believes she has found that with the Dillons. The closer she becomes to them though the further away she becomes from her husband.

I'm not sure why there is hate for this book (ahem, @emilyhaldi ). I loved it! The political aspect was fun and I thought the inclusion of Obama as a character was very interesting. I wish the author had included more scenes with Matt's family, because they really had me laughing! I thought this was an honest portrayal about how relationships can fall apart, and how those closest to us can suddenly feel like strangers.

Cinfhen Ok you two smarty pants sisters, I had to look up the word vacuous and I'm with Steph...in this case vacuous dialogue is my jam too????and I thought Beth was pretty witty and on point @emilyhaldi and to clarify @LitHousewife the author only mocked "stamping "as a craft form ?? 7y

Cinfhen Yay @BarbaraBB it was a fun read! Be prepared for the #vacuousdialogue 😘 7y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen 😂😂 7y
Reviewsbylola Lol, I didn't love Beth. I felt that a lot of her observations were on point, but it annoyed me that she was so willing to have her own opinions go unheard. The way she acted around everyone was so meek and unassuming, and it didn't do her any favors in my book. But still, that didn't make me like the book any less. Just didn't make me like her all that much. 😂 @Cinfhen 7y
mrozzz I'm with @emilyhaldi on this one 7y
emilyhaldi Yesssss @mrozzz we've got someone on #teamemily ! Finally 😂 7y
mrozzz Yeah!! 🤘🏻 @emilyhaldi I really wanted to like this one (because of the politics) but I just didn't like the characters. I'd also just read The Futures and found the premise so similar but not as successful. 7y
Reviewsbylola I do agree that I didn't actually like any of the characters. It's odd for me--I can't really pinpoint what it is about some unlikeable characters that totally can turn me off of a book, whereas sometimes, like here, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the novel. I think that with this one, I liked certain aspects about the characters, and what I didn't like were qualities that were very realistic and not over the top. @emilyhaldi @mrozzz 7y
Reviewsbylola It's almost like I could understand the poor parts of their personalities. And I think they all were good people deep down, but the stress of the men's career paths, coupled with other stressors like moving and a new baby, made me empathize with them and understand their bad behavior, even if I also wanted to shake them. @emilyhaldi @mrozzz 7y
mrozzz That's fair! 7y
Cinfhen I kind of liked Jimmy 🙄even though he was a #douchewad and I felt bad for Beth, she was trying to be supportive of her man, I didn't see her as weak @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @mrozzz (edited) 7y
Reviewsbylola I didn't see her as weak but I also think she could have made an effort to assert herself. She let things go on way too long without saying something to Matt and having a heart to heart. BUT I could also see how it happened because the situation was an odd one and I think for her (and him as well), hindsight is 20/20. And Jimmy was my favorite. 😂😂 @Cinfhen 7y
Cinfhen I always fall for those type of guys @reviewsbylola 😉😂😬who doesn't love a little Jimmy every now and then!?!? 7y
Cinfhen And I agree with your observations 7y
Reviewsbylola That type of charisma is hard to resist. But actually being married to him is a different story! @Cinfhen I think Jennifer Close needs to write a sequel from Ash and Jimmy's perspective, but maybe a couple of years down the line. Like say when Viv is 5. 7y
Cinfhen Yes!!!! I would love that @Reviewsbylola and I'd like a book about Matt's family...those sister in laws were hilarious 💕 7y

Funny you should ask, I'm hosting friends tonight so it's a Moroccan fish appetizer with a lovely green salad, wine (duh) and lemon chicken, rice pilaf & garlic glazed string beans with caramelized almonds. When the prompt #YoungAmericans came up, I immediately thought of The Hopefuls. It follows two couples. The husbands met on the Obama campaign trail and take jobs in the new administration. Of course it's not that easy, right? 😉🇺🇸🇺🇸

Recently started the audiobook. Funny stuff & the narrator's voice is great so far. I hope the main character stops constantly badmouthing DC in comparison to Manhattan at some point, though! I've lived in both & they both have their strengths.

Pickpick

The first part of the book in Washington DC was enjoyable, light and funny. I loved reading about the Obama campaigns, the dinners, parties and balls. I thought the whole book was going to be about politics in DC. It was really about the marriages of Matt and Beth and Jimmy and Ashleigh and the couples" friendship so it became a downer. Still it held my interest and even though it was hard to like these people I wanted to see how they'd end up.

Hoping to finish this tonight. It has some of the most awful characters I've come across in recent memory and I almost gave up on it a couple of times because of that but I have also enjoyed the writing so I stuck with it. Happy to almost be done though! And I still love the cover.

bookandcat I was reading this in the days before the election and was enjoying it but after the election couldn't finish it because I couldn't read about politics anymore. Hopefully one day I'll go back to it! 7y
Rachellynnwright I finally found another litten from LA! I used to live in Hollywood but moved to Sherman Oaks:) 7y
Bookish_B @Rachellynnwright oh, yay! There seem to be so few of us, right? 7y

The last two books I've read have centered around an inside view of Washington, D.C. While I had mixed feelings about both of these books, it is a subject that I find fascinating.
