The Hopefuls: A novel | Jennifer Close
post image
Pickpick

I'm not sure why there is hate for this book (ahem, @emilyhaldi ). I loved it! The political aspect was fun and I thought the inclusion of Obama as a character was very interesting. I wish the author had included more scenes with Matt's family, because they really had me laughing! I thought this was an honest portrayal about how relationships can fall apart, and how those closest to us can suddenly feel like strangers.

KarenUK So behind... very distracted today... but I'm about 120 pages in and loving it... @Reviewsbylola @Cinfhen 7y
Reviewsbylola I've had a lazy day today! I pretty much did nothing all day except hang out with my kids and read. @KarenUK 7y

emilyhaldi Ha! I'm glad you liked it more than me. It just got tired at some point and I was bothered by the vacuous dialogue 😏 7y
Reviewsbylola Vacuous dialogue is my jam. 👍🏻 @emilyhaldi 7y
LitHousewife I'm with @emilyhaldi, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. When the main character made fun of crafting, I said, "Peace out." ? 7y
BethFishReads See, I liked it too 7y
Cinfhen Ok you two smarty pants sisters, I had to look up the word vacuous and I'm with Steph...in this case vacuous dialogue is my jam too????and I thought Beth was pretty witty and on point @emilyhaldi and to clarify @LitHousewife the author only mocked "stamping "as a craft form ?? 7y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @LitHousewife @Cinfhen All your comments made me smile and stack the book! 7y
Cinfhen Yay @BarbaraBB it was a fun read! Be prepared for the #vacuousdialogue 😘 7y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen 😂😂 7y
Reviewsbylola Lol, I didn't love Beth. I felt that a lot of her observations were on point, but it annoyed me that she was so willing to have her own opinions go unheard. The way she acted around everyone was so meek and unassuming, and it didn't do her any favors in my book. But still, that didn't make me like the book any less. Just didn't make me like her all that much. 😂 @Cinfhen 7y
mrozzz I'm with @emilyhaldi on this one 7y
emilyhaldi Yesssss @mrozzz we've got someone on #teamemily ! Finally 😂 7y
mrozzz Yeah!! 🤘🏻 @emilyhaldi I really wanted to like this one (because of the politics) but I just didn't like the characters. I'd also just read The Futures and found the premise so similar but not as successful. 7y
Reviewsbylola I do agree that I didn't actually like any of the characters. It's odd for me--I can't really pinpoint what it is about some unlikeable characters that totally can turn me off of a book, whereas sometimes, like here, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the novel. I think that with this one, I liked certain aspects about the characters, and what I didn't like were qualities that were very realistic and not over the top. @emilyhaldi @mrozzz 7y
Reviewsbylola It's almost like I could understand the poor parts of their personalities. And I think they all were good people deep down, but the stress of the men's career paths, coupled with other stressors like moving and a new baby, made me empathize with them and understand their bad behavior, even if I also wanted to shake them. @emilyhaldi @mrozzz 7y
mrozzz That's fair! 7y
Cinfhen I kind of liked Jimmy 🙄even though he was a #douchewad and I felt bad for Beth, she was trying to be supportive of her man, I didn't see her as weak @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @mrozzz (edited) 7y
Reviewsbylola I didn't see her as weak but I also think she could have made an effort to assert herself. She let things go on way too long without saying something to Matt and having a heart to heart. BUT I could also see how it happened because the situation was an odd one and I think for her (and him as well), hindsight is 20/20. And Jimmy was my favorite. 😂😂 @Cinfhen 7y
Cinfhen I always fall for those type of guys @reviewsbylola 😉😂😬who doesn't love a little Jimmy every now and then!?!? 7y
Cinfhen And I agree with your observations 7y
Reviewsbylola That type of charisma is hard to resist. But actually being married to him is a different story! @Cinfhen I think Jennifer Close needs to write a sequel from Ash and Jimmy's perspective, but maybe a couple of years down the line. Like say when Viv is 5. 7y
Cinfhen Yes!!!! I would love that @Reviewsbylola and I'd like a book about Matt's family...those sister in laws were hilarious 💕 7y
Reviewsbylola Matt's family was my favorite part. 😂 @Cinfhen 7y
Mdargusch Very interesting discussion on this one. 7y
KarenUK @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola Finally finished it a couple of days ago, and loved it too! 💕 7y
Reviewsbylola I'm glad you loved it too! @karenuk 7y
Cinfhen Same @KarenUK I thought it was smartly done❤️ 7y
