Frankenstein
Frankenstein | Mary W. Shelley
Originally written as a response to a challenge from Lord Byron? Frankenstein still haunts our minds with images of the dead brought back to hideous life. Mary Shelley's nineteenth-century masterpiece begins with a fateful rescue in the Arctic and slowly evolves into a gripping story of horror'a contest of wills between Victor Frankenstein and the monster he creates. Wandering through Europe? the confused creature searches for a father figure in the tortured scientist who stitched him together with body parts stolen from the grave. Themes of revenge? the philosophical limits of science? and forbidden knowledge are deeply explored in the greatest Gothic novel ever written. This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader contend with Shelley's complex vocabulary and references.

Just watched the new Frankenstein movie on Netflix. I‘m a huge fan of the book and this adaptation skewed pretty far from the source material. I wish it had been truer to the book! But it‘s beautifully shot, and Jacob Elordi was brilliant as the Creature.

vivastory It definitely took some liberties... but I can definitely understand the reasoning 3d

My first read of Frankenstein, October 2025 in time to watch the new movie. So much wonderful language in here, and one of my fav parts of the movie was when the word Countenance was used. One could have a Countenance drinking game while reading this. Frankenstein is a whiney bastard who always runs from the problems he‘s created at the expense of his loved ones; the monster more human than human. The movie lacked so much of this.

danx I was utterly disappointed in del Toro‘s choice to end the movie with a quote from Byron. Why not a quote from Mary Shelley? There are so many wonderful lines in this book. 4d
Cathythoughts Great review! What a shame the movie couldn‘t have told the story Mary Shelley wrote. ❤️ 4d

We read Frankenstein for our Bookclub. There are so many layers of meaning and angles to look at it from. I didn‘t understand half of all that, but I loved reading it. I watched some of the new Frankenstein movie and it is beautifully filmed, mesmerizing to watch , But , I was disappointed that the story was not the same as the book.

Tamra I fell in love with this novel! 💜 Agreed, it‘s incredibly rich in themes. I don‘t think I‘ll watch the film if that‘s the case. 5d
BookmarkTavern What a great picture! 💖 4d
Cathythoughts @Tamra I havnt finished it , but I will go back to it. Victor‘s father is cruel , not the loving man of the book.. Also Elizabeth comes into the story in a very different way. I‘d love to have seen Mary Shelley‘s story told. I‘m curious to see what else happens, now that I‘m over the shock ( as I read somewhere that this film is true to the book 🙄) … 4d
Cathythoughts @BookmarkTavern Thankyou ❤️ 4d

Did anyone else watch the #frankenstein movie that came out yesterday? I‘m SO intrigued by other peoples‘ thoughts. I have one major gripe with it- Victor‘s parental background. Much of the tragedy in the book centers around how Victor came from an extremely loving family but didn‘t carry those values to his treatment of his own “child”. The movie shows such a different background for Victor that seems to give a more generational trauma message.

TieDyeDude I haven't read the book yet, but I loved this movie version. It made me want to read the book more than any other version I've seen. That change in his background is interesting; it totally worked for the movie, and fits with themes in the rest of del Toro's filmography. I like the idea of him coming from a loving family, though. 4d
Lin3han @TieDyeDude I HIGHLY recommend the book. I just reread it within the past week and it‘s a true masterpiece. I really liked Del Toro‘s version too! I think it‘s the best adaptation out there. I also don‘t put much stock into movie adaptations because the media is so different, but this adaptation was beautiful! 4d
danx There is so much which was lost in the movie. Inverting his childhood; the monster too pretty; removing his mother at a young age and Justine completely making for an overly masculine story, even ending with a Byron quote which I found poor taste; the monster doesn‘t cause any direct hurt and so it lacked all complexity and had a totally different reasoning and morality. Pretty enough movie and enjoyed the theatre experience, confused that GdT is 4d
danx supposed to be such a fan with the choices he made. I respect it‘s a take on the story and a retelling but not my favourite of his work. 4d

I had started this book for the buddy read for #hauntedshelf but it took me too long. I could go into themes and why this book is so brilliant but mostly, I forgot how many melancholy fits Victor Frankenstein has. The man is the dictionary definition of depressed.

Guillermo del Toro is a true artist, and, since missing Nightmare Alley, it had been too long since I've seen one of his films in theaters. I was so happy to see his latest last night during its limited run. I've yet to read the source material, but his take on Frankenstein is hauntingly emotional and the film just looks amazing. Isaac and Elordi are brilliant. Streaming on Netflix tomorrow!

Centique I saw it at the cinema too! So beautiful on the big screen 😍 Only had to cover my eyes once. The sawing got to me more than the body in the courtroom - that was fine 😂😂 1w

This was a reread for me, and while I always love reading along with the #HashtagBrigade , ol' Victor got on my nerves even more this time around. He's just so useless! If he spent half the time actually doing something productive as he does sitting around and bemoaning his fate, the creature wouldn't have had the opportunities for destruction that he had. In the end, I think both Frankenstein and the creature are both monsters. This book ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) definitely deserves its status as a classic and is completely worth the read, but I get too aggravated with literally everyone to really love it. Soft pick.

Took my daughter to the movies on Halloween to see Frankenstein, by Guillermo Del Toro. It veers from the book but it was a beautiful adaptation, Elizabeth has far more of a role and the Creature‘s initial innocence is so well done. Daughter wept - I nearly did - really moving. Also a bit gory in places. I saw a great meme titling the movie “Frankenstein - or how to DIY Jacob Elordi in your basement” 😂

GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 2w

vivastory @Centique I log my movies, but I don't write reviews on them (with the one time exception of Brandon Cronenberg's Possessor, when I wrote something along the lines of: I don't think I've ever muttered WTF so frequently in the final 5 minutes of a movie. In honor of Halloween and the finishing of this brilliant novel by the #hashtagbrigade. This one never gets old. 🖤💚🖤

AnnCrystal Wow, incredible capturing. Powerful 👏🏼🐝🥺🐝💝.

I was reading Guillermo del Toro's comments about his new take on Frankenstein.

Never read the book, nor have I watched any of the movies...I tried when I was a kid, but I just couldn't because it was just too sad.

Yet, I found Guillermo's remarks on the storyline very interesting.

🥲🎬💝.
2w
AnnCrystal Qoute “I did want it to have the arrogance of Victor [Frankenstein] be similar in some ways to the tech bros. He's kind of blind, creating something without considering the consequences.“ - Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro later clarified that the film is not a metaphor for AI, stating, “I'm not afraid of artificial intelligence. I'm afraid of natural stupidity.“

Frankenstein was enjoyable enough. As usual it wasn‘t at all what I thought it would be, but that‘s not a bad thing. My favorite chapters were the ones where they were on the boat. My least favorites were when Frank would just faint for months at a time.

I noticed some mixed reactions as I left the sold out nighttime showing of Del Toro's latest. Personally? I loved it. I think that if you have read the, & enjoyed, the book you will be pleased. I think that otherwise it might seem too slow. Although there are a few liberties here & there it is a very faithful version & it is undoubtedly one of Del Toro's most visually stunning works.

Bookwomble @vivastory I really liked Cabinet of Curiosities, especially the Lovecraft adaptations (despite the liberties!). I'd guessed they weren't doing a second series after this time - so many good shows don't seem to get the traction they need 🫤 3w
vivastory @Bookwomble This is true. I read recently in Filterworld that around 70 percent of the NF content are series. That's why I'm so cautious of starting any of them. I mean Stranger Things is wrapping up a decade after it aired, but this is the new norm for streaming 3w
vivastory @Bookwomble I still need to watch season 4 of Stranger Things. I plan on doing so before season 5, but I read an article about the planned release dates for season 5 and it is wild. I have never seen anything like it 3w

Cathythoughts I‘ve only just started the book, good question. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but I see dark academia here …. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Huh… it‘s a stretch but not entirely wrong. Victor goes to university to do all his creating. 1mo
ravenlee @MuddyPuddle @Litsi @Cathythoughts @Clare-Dragonfly I can see how you could make the argument, and I agree that there are elements of dark academia, but I think it‘s more adjacent than full-on DA. But while I know Frankenstein reasonably well, I‘m no expert on DA as a genre. 1mo

Bookwormjillk He didn‘t know the language when he was first in the stone hut and now he speaks better than me on my best day. 1mo

KAO @TheAromaofBooks I take it back! The description of mysterious, misty paths in the mountains of Switzerland in this chapter seems ideal for the setting here! (My limited experiences in the Swiss Alps have mostly been glorious summer days where it was hard to let dark thoughts take up any space in one‘s mind in the face of such grandeur!) (edited) 1mo
KAO I confess that I‘m flabbergasted that the creature has such fantastic thought processes and linguistic abilities!! All from the transplanted brain? Can‘t wait to learn more! 1mo
See All 12 Comments
Bookwormjillk @KAO that‘s what I thought too! I didn‘t expect such an eloquent creature! 1mo
dabbe The creature is highly intelligent and longs for companionship. Victor (the “father) shuns his creation JUST BECAUSE he is hideous on the outside. The creature then becomes hideous on the inside because of his abandonment by Victor. One just has to ask: which is more important to one's development as a human being? Nature or nurture? The easy answer is both are important, but the case for “nurture“ is about to be made by the creature in his tale. 1mo
Sparklemn @dabbe Can‘t wait to hear the creature‘s sad tale. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - I guess any setting can be good for a bit of a horror story if it's stormy enough 😂 1mo
dabbe @Sparklemn IKR? It's a doozy. 🖤 1mo
ElizaMarie Where did he get the monsters brain? So where was he “hiding” how did the monster get so intelligent. He just wants his daddy to love him. 1mo
julieclair The creature‘s eloquence was definitely a surprise! I‘m already beginning to feel a bit sorry for him. 1mo

KAO Hmm. This is called chapter 9 in my version. I just checked, and the very last chapter is 24. This will keep me motivated to keep up, since our chapter labels are different! 1mo

dabbe @KAO You might be reading the original version, published in 1818, which only has 23 chapters. The second edition, which was edited by Mary Shelley, is usually the one that's read more; it was published in 1831. 1mo
KAO @dabbe My cover does say “The original classic text.” No problem—I‘ll keep up! 1mo
dabbe @KAO 💜🧡💛 1mo
julieclair @ElizaMarie Agreed! He let Justine die rather than speak up. I have no sympathy for him. 1mo
julieclair @BarkingMadRead Please add me to the tag list. 😀 1mo

dabbe Of course, blame the help! Victor is now responsible for two deaths for not being forthcoming regarding his role in this fiasco. It seems that the creature is wreaking his revenge on Victor for abandoning him. All innocence is lost. 1mo

KAO Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of this book, I‘ve been amazed that this takes place in Switzerland, of all places! So are these characters British transplants—and I missed that somehow? Or are they really speaking German, French, Italian, or Romansh (official languages of Switzerland), and we‘re just getting an English translation?? Just seems odd to me! 1mo
KAO Okay—I had forgotten about the letters at the beginning! Robert Walton wrote to his family members from Russia and then later from his sea voyage about meeting this very sad fellow traveller (Victor, I assume), who spoke “in English, although with a foreign accent” and who later shared his tragic tale. I know he needed to be from a mysterious place, but Switzerland? 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Victor continues to be incredibly self-centered, insisting that he is the most tormented! 1mo
ElizaMarie Poor Justine!!! 1mo
Sparklemn Why didn‘t anyone at the trial ask how she could have had the physical strength to strangle a healthy young man with her bare hands? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Switzerland has a lot of dramatic settings, so it definitely helps 😂 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn - Right? And why said healthy young man would just... let her?? 1mo
KAO @TheAromaofBooks I guess you‘re right! My own experiences there have been quite limited and significantly less dramatic in a “great setting for a horror story” sense! 😂 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Ooooo I would love to visit Switzerland! I am sure photographs do not do it justice! 1mo
Seabreeze_Reader @Clare-Dragonfly Those were my thoughts, too! He claims to be wretched but then basically does nothing. By this point, Victor should have been trying to track down his creation, knowing what will likely happen again. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Sparklemn @TheAromaofBooks I thought he was a child… 1mo
Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly oh, he may be a child! I‘m not sure which brother is which. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly - I think he was 7 or 8? And “tall for his age“ from Elizabeth's letter. I'm sure he could have been overpowered by a full-grown woman, but it still seems like it would have been a struggle, or that he would have had time to call out for help? 1mo

Clare-Dragonfly @peanutnine Seriously, I know he‘s been sick for part of the time, but how did two years manage to pass?! 1mo

Clare-Dragonfly So… what does he think the creature is doing?! And Elizabeth apparently thinks Victor is an idiot, since she assumes he doesn‘t remember how a girl described as a great favorite of his came to join the household 😂 1mo
ElizaMarie @dabbe yeah he is very #OutOfSightOutIOfMind about this creature 1mo
KAO It‘s unbelievable how the creature is simply not a concern! I kept waiting for comments indicating Victor‘s worry—or at least curiosity!! 1mo

dabbe Victor, Victor ... you had to know that reattaching parts from corpses and then sewing them back together was not going to produce a handsome creature. You ran away because he's ugly? Or did you run away from yourself and the fact that you just tried to play God over the universe? You literally have messed with Mother Nature, and she's gonna get ugly on your ass. #mytwocents 1mo

dabbe Maybe the moms die to spur the children to grow up and go on their quest. Victor's mom definitely did that for him. I find it interesting, too, that Victor ignores the warnings of his first professor, Krempe, just as Walton seems to ignore Victor: both are blinded by their ambition to gain glory. Walton wants to find the northwest passage, and Victor wants to aid society through science. As @BarkingMadRead knowingly said, #whatcouldgowrong? 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly And the mom‘s dying wish is for Victor and Elizabeth to get married 😬 1mo
