Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores
Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores: True Tales and Lost Moments from Book Buyers, Booksellers, and Book Lovers | Bob Eckstein
From beloved New Yorker cartoonist Bob Eckstein, Footnotes from the Worlds Greatest Bookstores invites you into the heart and soul of every community: the local bookshop, each with its own quirks, charms, and legendary stories. This collection of seventy-five of the most cherished bookstores from around the world features evocative paintings by Eckstein paired with colorful anecdotes about each shop, featuring a roster of great thinkers and artists of our time, including David Bowie, Tom Wolfe, Joe Frank, Tracey Chevalier, Jonathan Lethem, Michael Palin, Roz Chast, Deepak Chopra, Bob Odenkirk, Robin Williams, Patricia Marx, Philip Glass, Paul McCartney, Dave Berry, Michael Jackson, Jonathan Ames, Terry Gross, Mark Maron, Neil Gaiman, Ann Patchett, Jo Nesbo, Diane Keaton, Chris Ware, Molly Crabapple, Amitav Ghosh, Patti Smith, Mo Willems, Alice Munro, Dave Eggers, Roxanna Robinson, Garrison Keillor and many more. Page by page, Eckstein perfectly captures our lifelong love affair with books, bookstores, and book-sellers that is at once heartfelt, bittersweet, and cheerfully confessional. From the Hardcover edition.

I am in love with this book! It has little paintings of the bookstore, a little blurb about it, and then a quote or tidbit about the bookstore. It brings me so much joy.

1) The Last Bookstore in LA, City Lights, Parnassus, Powell's, Birchbark Books. I lived in Minneapolis for 4 years but somehow never visited.
2) It depends. Sometimes I go with 1 or 2 in mind, other times (like today) I might have one but will browse & see what serendipity brings.
Thanks for the tag @Nute 📚📚 I *still* try not to take bookstores for granted. Remember the sheer joy of visiting one for the first time after covid closures?

Nute I wonder what‘s behind the name, The Last Bookstore in LA? I‘m definitely not visiting bookstores as frequently as preCOVID times so now every trip and every book purchase feels like a special treat especially after the news report regarding expected decreased publication quantity. 2y
vivastory @Nute I've always wondered about the name, too. It's a very unusual name. I think that I go as frequently now as I used to but I don't spend as long per visit as I did pre-pandemic. I still don't feel comfortable enough to sit in an corner for a few hours sipping on a hot coffee & reading. 2y

New bookstore alert! This is a non-profit in Guilford, CT that raises money to get talkers for non-verbal folks. #bookstore
Pro-tip: Branford is having a massive library booksale this weekend. So #CT Litsy folks need to book it (hah) out here this weekend :)

What a charming book! I enjoyed every story and painting of all the independent bookstores featured in this book. It‘s easily read sporadically, but I found myself so intrigued that I tended to read in larger chunks. Added bonus, I have now compiled a list of all the stores I'd love to visit one day, which is to say, all of the stores featured in this book. Sadly, some are now closed. But happily, many are still open! Ahh to dream! 5/5⭐️

mrp27 This was such a lovely read! 4y
PurpleyPumpkin @mrp27 Wasn't it? As a confirmed bibliophile, I was expecting to enjoy it. But, I have to say, I really loved it. It broke my heart reading about bookstores I hadn't had a chance to visit that are now closed. Hopefully, there will always be indie bookstores. 💜 4y
UwannaPublishme I‘d love to tag along on your global tour of all these cool bookstores. But I‘d probably need a truck to haul all my purchases. 😁 4y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme Haha, you and me both! Between the two of us, I‘m quite certain we could fill a VERY large truck with our purchases. 😁📚 4y

LOOK AT THIS PARADISE OKAY? ?

This is my favourite bookstore in Germany: Dussmann in the Friedrichstraße (Berlin Mitte). It has the biggest English books variety in the country, a huge selection of notebooks, travel books, dvds, cds, and more. Also, it is absolutely gorgeous ?.

I love to read and I love to travel. This is a cool book of stories from bookstores around the world. 🌎I always visit indie bookstores when I am traveling. Does anyone have suggestions for ones that cannot be missed?

GondorGirl If you're in Pittsburgh there's a bookstore co-owner by author Peter S. Beagle. It's called Rickert and Beagle, I believe. It's a really neat little store. My other favorite (and the only reason to ever go to LA) is The Last Bookstore. 6y
BookMaven407 @GondorGirl I will add both to my list! Thank you! 6y
shendrix413 I went to undergrad in Knoxville and there was this amazing bookstore there, so I looked it up to share with you and it's closed 😣😢 that was my favorite place 6y

BookNAround Malaprops in Asheville, NC is great and there‘s Battery Park Book Exhange and Champagne Bar there as well. I love both Charlotte area bookstores and their owners: Park Road Books in Charlotte and Main Street Books in Davidson. McLean and Eakin in Petosky, Michigan is amazing if you ever get to Northern Lower Michigan. Shuler Books in Lansing, Literati in Ann Arbor, and Nicola‘s Books also in Ann Arbor are also great. Love Book Passages in SF too. 6y
BookMaven407 @BookNAround I've been to both of the Asheville bookstores and love them! I think the Battery Park Book Exchange is a beautiful store. For my personal reading likes I found more book selections at Malaprop's. I think both cannot be missed! Thanks for the other suggestions, I will add them to my list. 🙂 6y
BookNAround I agree with you on the book selection comment on the Asheville stores but I visit both (and a couple others as well) when we end up there just in case. 😂 6y
BookMaven407 @shendrix413 I recently visited Knoxville. I ❤️Mckays used bookstore. I spent an entire day in the store. I also visited Union Ave Books. 6y
BookMaven407 @BookNAround I share the same addiction to bookstores. 😁 6y
TricksyTails I just saw this book at the library and enjoyed thumbing through it. I could spend hours –more like days – wandering a bookstore. Unfortunately I no longer live close to any. If you happen to travel to Los Angeles, you must go to The Last Bookstore. 6y
Karkar Not sure where you live but Powell‘s in Portland Oregon is my most favorite book store ever!!!! 6y
