I enjoyed this book. I like a good quick read on a Saturday and James Patterson and co-writer never disappoint. My local library has a program where you can check off writers that you like, from their list of writers, and when a new book is published you are put on the hold list automatically. I must get a notification of a hold book ready from James Patterson at least once a month. #QuiteProlific

I was reading an old paper back of my moms. And discovered this at the end of the book. I so remember these. I never actually use them to buy a book back in the day. Has anyone? #oldschool #preamazon

Hooked_on_books I never used them, either, but that‘s a great little bit of nostalgia! 5y
Crazeedi Remember them well, but never had money to buy! 5y
LisaJo @Hooked_on_books I like that you used nostalgia. Cuz I was using old. 🤦🏻‍♀️ @Crazeedi me either...especially due to being a kid. We went to the library a lot. Funded my love of libraries for life. 5y
Crazeedi @LisaJo yes libraries were my love, we had a traveling library that came to our rural village. You could go into the van, or a lady kept a small library in her basement that they kept books from main library too. I remember the smell of that van...😍 5y

Found this book in a free little library in Phil Campbell, Alabama. I was passing through on my way to a restaurant that‘s in a cave, yes it‘s a real restaurant in a cave, in North West Alabama when I passed a park that had a free little library. I had to stop. It was mostly full of romance novels. However, in the corner I found this book; looks like it‘s probably assigned to high school students. I will give it a try.

KathyWheeler I have a friend who moved to Phil Campbell; the first time he told me the name of the town, I didn‘t believe there was actually a town with that name. 😄 Oh, I read The Day of the Locust in grad school and remember liking it. (edited) 5y

This is the next book for our book club. I‘ve heard I need to buy a box of Kleenex to use as I read this book . It‘s already starting to make me cry as it opens with a quote from Ayrton Senna. One of the best Formula 1 🏎 racing drivers ever. His death in 1994 at the Sam Marino Race in Italy was truly a sad day for racing fans. He was ONE of the best.

Yes you can like 📚 & 🏎 .

Once again, another great Jane Harper book. I thought I‘d not enjoy this one as much because it was not an Aaron Falk book. However, that is not the case. I enjoyed this one quite a bit. My only complaint, is now I have to wait until she writes a new one. #JaneHarperFan

As the title would suggest, this is a retelling or based on novel of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It was a modern retelling. I found it to be quite a fun read. The author had twisted and turns that made it just that much different than the original to keep you interested. Definitely recommend it to readers who like a good psychological thriller and readers who like Rebecca. The writer honored the original text quite nicely.

I enjoyed the latest John Grisham. It‘s definitely not one of my favorites, however. It was advertised as being different then the rest of his novels. And it was…reasons in the comments so not to spoil it.

LisaJo The book is told in three parts the first part is the crime and its outcome. The last part is where all the secrets and lies and stories come together to explain the first part. The middle part tells the story of action in the Pacific theater during World War II. Specifically the Philippines. Yeah, was not expecting that. 5y

I just finished reading,The Scroll, a short story from this book. I was very entertained. It is the first Anne Perry I have ever read so I do not know if it‘s her ordinary theme and writing style or if it was written for the theme of this anthology . But, I did enjoy it. It felt like there was a touch of Dan Brown and Steve Berry in it also.

Reason 523 to love libraries: automatic book renewals. I have not finished this book. It was due this upcoming Sat. I was going to renew it online toward the end of the week. I received an email from the library today stating that my book was due on Sat, however, it may have automatically renewed. Holy moly cow. I am amazed. Libraries plus technology equals happy happy readers.

Amie I work at a public library and in the first 10 minutes of my shift this morning a patron complained that we had automatically renewed her book that is due tomorrow which she was returning today. This is such a convenient service for most people, so I can't quite understand what her problem was. It's nice to see that you appreciate the service 😊 5y
Bookzombie @amie My library doesn‘t do this, but I would love it. I often renew items and then return them the next day when I can get to the library. 5y
LisaJo @amie That is kind of strange. It‘s not like you get charged for a renewal. 5y
LisaJo @bookzombie I too have renewed items just so I can delay when I have to get back to the library. I‘m pretty positive if there is someone waiting for the book they will not auto renew it for you. I have cards for two libraries. Only one of them does this. Perhaps it will start to pop up at more libraries. 5y

I enjoyed reading this historical novel. I really found the characters fascinating. I liked the fashion in which the author slowly gave us details of these characters. By the way the bookmark shown in the picture is from the bookstore, called Novel, in Memphis where I purchased this book. I was on a road trip and had to visit a bookstore. It‘s a nice well organized bookstore not as quaint as some independent bookstore. But has a killer restaurant.

OK, I‘m biting the bullet, pun intended, and taking a bullet journaling class at the local library. I‘m not sure if it‘s for me, but wanted to give it a shot, once again, pun intended. Maybe I‘ll continue, maybe I won‘t. Either way, I bought a beautiful journal for the class.

StephanieGeiser I really enjoyed my bullet journal experience! In the end I felt a little overwhelmed because of all the beautiful examples I saw on IG and Pinterest and ended up going back to my previous methods of staying organized. Stay true to yourself and what you want from bullet journaling and you‘ll get a lot from it! Just don‘t get sidetracked/intimidates by what others do. :) 5y

When I was in university back in the late 80s, I took a job calling alumni and asking them to pledge money. During one of the conversations I had, the woman on the phone said that her and her husband did not believe in a higher education for their daughters and would not be pledging. I thought she was joking to get out of pledging but, during an extended conversation, I found this to be their take on life now. To this day I‘m utterly disturbed.

TrishB 😔 5y
Amiable Such a medieval way of thinking. Every woman needs to be able to take care of herself. There are no guarantees that being married and having babies will work out financially for any of us! Spouses die; divorces happen. If I had daughters ( I have two sons) I'd feel MORE inclined to make sure they got an education, especially since the world is still set up to favor males. 5y

This is not an easy book to read. It definitely has trigger warnings. All.The.Trigger.Warnings. Is beautifully written, which so contrast with the grittiness and violence and sadness of the book. I recommend for the great storyline, the characters, the beautiful prose. I caution reading this based on the violence. However, is life not combination of the good and the bad.

It read exactly like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. Those movies usually included somebody with an illness, a long last child, bittersweet happiness. Sometimes I don‘t care if I can pick the ending out with the very first line of the book. I like the journey. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to crawl into a Hallmark movie for a Saturday afternoon.

This book was a fascinating read. It wasn‘t written as fiction, but it read like fiction in some places. That being said the quote above by Gillian Flynn in the introduction speaks to me quite a bit. Because of that, I can‘t say I enjoyed the book, however, I can say it was very well done. Because events have happened after this book was released, I know it was quite successful, I can say I enjoyed that part.

wonderkales Libraries do have to pay for the books they use though. Ebooks are a great example of that, ebooks can only be used a certain number of times before the library has to pay for the ebook again. The Reading Glasses Podcast did a great interview with a librarian on some of these points. 6y

JSW Libraries are a community service. They provide access to information, not just books. Libraries are a source of free internet and computers, resource materials that not everyone can afford to purchase, programs that introduce people (children and adults) to literacy, and a place to gather with others. “Free” books is only one aspect of what libraries provide their communities. 6y
JSW Not to mention that historically, only the very wealthy could afford books. Libraries only existed privately and books were not available to the common person, in other words, knowledge was not available to the common person. Public libraries changed the playing field. They allowed anyone access to information, regardless of socioeconomic status. 6y
JSW Access to information and the ability to read have often been tools of the oppressor to maintain control and power and privilege. Slaves in America were not allowed to learn to read. The poor in many places (including America) don‘t have access to an education because of prohibitive costs. Girls are even now denied schooling around the globe. Public access to information and education is revolutionary. Libraries serve the cause. 🖕🏻 (edited) 6y
JSW POWER TO THE LIBRARIES. POWER TO THE PEOPLE. 🙌🏼 6y
KathyWheeler I‘m shocked at the idiocy and privilege reflected in that statement. Libraries pay huge amounts of money for what they purchase. A book checked out from a library doesn‘t automatically = loss of revenue for an author; it‘s impossible to know whether a person would‘ve bought the book if no library had been around — money or not. Many authors are great supporters of libraries because they know that‘s how their books get out to a wider public. 6y
Prairiegirl_reading Don‘t do the work for him. Tell him to find out how much libraries pay to publishers for the books they loan and how that system actually works. Then unfriend him. 6y
Bookgirl Looks like @JSW has got your answer covered. He may simply be ignorant and not thinking things through. Or, he may be a pot-stirrer. Either way, I wouldn‘t let it bug you. People say all sorts of silly things, especially on social media. Deep breaths and unfollow or unfriend if he‘s always being a jerk. 6y
LisaJo @Jennick2004 @dariazeoli @wonderkales @JSW @KathyWheeler @Prairiegirl_reading @Bookgirl Thank you all for your help. I believe I will provide him with some info you have suggested and then say goodbye to him. #LITTENSROCK 6y

LisaJo Hey all, I think one of the best responses I got to this issue was on Twitter. Of course, besides all of your great answers. Somebody reminded me, and all of us, that libraries are not taking the books and making 1 million copies of them. As one would do with pirated or illegal downloads. Libraries are buying the books from the publishers and allowing people to check out the purchase copies. 6y

This book reads like 12 short stories nestled amongst a novella. I enjoyed that. This book was right in my wheelhouse. It was gritty , and I do enjoy a gritty novel. It was a coming-of-age story, a genre I thoroughly enjoy. The characters are not 100% likable, kind of like life. I would recommended it. Trigger warning: there is a little violence. OK, there‘s a lot of violence. But, deep down inside it‘s the story of love, safety, and family.
