Frankenstein (Collins Classics)
Frankenstein (Collins Classics) | Mary Shelley
HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. The rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open Victor Frankenstein s monster is stitched together from the limbs of the dead, taken from the dissecting room and the slaughter-house . The result is a grotesque being who, rejected by his maker and starved of human companionship, sets out on a journey to seek his revenge. In the most famous gothic horror story ever told, Shelley confronts the limitations of science, the nature of human cruelty and the pathway to forgiveness.Begun when Mary Shelley was only eighteen years old and published two years later, this chilling tale of a young scientist s desire to create life and the consequences of that creation still resonate today."

I‘m a sucker for classics and this book was no exception. The story line was captivating and I loved the characters, especially Victor and Clerval. Clerval was such a loving friend, he didn‘t deserve what happened to him! I also felt bad for Victor, he just wanted to enjoy life and the wonders of science! Overall, the novel was amazing and I loved that it was written through letters. The story within a story was genius.

CogsOfEncouragement I really enjoyed this one too. 2w

Finished! A story within a story with in a story. Definitely not at all what I was expecting.

To be honest, I loved the concept and the depth of the story but found myself either confused or missing details over and over. Im not even sure what happened at the end... 😪😬

I listened to it on audiobook but this classic deserves to be held physically and cherished. I'll have to read it again!

Solid 3.5 stars because I missed a lot of detail.

Ruthiella I think the ending was a little open ended-the monster sails off on a ice floe - maybe he survives? Room for a sequel...probably someone has already written it! 2mo
LoverOfLearning @Ruthiella yeah it was so so hard to focus on the audiobook at times. I had to relisten to the ending like 3 times and eventually I gave up. I more or less the gist of it. HA And yeah I'm sure someone has! 1mo

My all-time favorite anti-hero (and I LOVE a morally conflicted protagonist) is the Creature in Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein. This is one of my favorite novels to teach and the Creature is the most tragic of tragic heroes! His deeply flawed character is so complex and has so much to teach us….if only we‘d listen.

I loved this book — again. The movies always portray the monster as clumsy and slow, but, in the book, he‘s fast and limber. A lot of different themes are dealt with — the impact of isolation on social creatures, the responsibility of a creator to not only their creation but to the rest of humanity, and ethics in science are just a few. It‘s also beautifully written. I started Mercy Falls when I finished Frankenstein. #audiowalk

I am really enjoying this reread of Frankenstein. It‘s been many, many years since I read it, and my perspective on some things is a little different. Dan Stevens is a good narrator. It was such a beautiful day today. #audiowalk

Somebody on Litsy mentioned Frankenstein, and it‘s been years since I read it, so I made it my new walking book. The animals were out in full force in the park today. I think that‘s a beaver with the bird; it‘s the first time I‘ve seen a live one there — I‘ve seen 2 or 3 dead ones. #audiowalk

Been listening to this audiobook on YouTube! Definitely good quality and I love the voice actors different voices for each character.

So far this is a fascinating story!! I am so enthralled with how Frankenstein is viewing the world. Although, I am missing a lot of the details regarding some of the other side stories. This book deserves a physical reread if I ever get around to it.

Can't wait to finish this one! Predicting a 4 star read.

“My reign is not yet over- you live, and my power is complete”
I‘ve only ever seen the Frankenstein movie so I was very pleasantly surprised and shocked that the original monster does in fact speak. I have many many thoughts on this book and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. I know she‘s credited with one of the first science fiction novels ever but I think this book is so much more complex than she‘s given credit for.

"When I looked around I saw and heard of none like me. Was I, then, a monster, a blot upon the earth, from which all men fled and whom all men disowned?"

Wow. I thought I knew what this book was about but I never knew there was this much depth to it. I'm fascinated by this story and Frankensteins view of man's desires, wants, fears, and laws. And ultimately the understanding of himself.

A wonderful experience so far.

Liatrek I felt the same when I first read it. I wish they would do a more faithful movie adaption of the source material. 3mo
LoverOfLearning @Liatrek ohh yeah that's fair! I haven't thought about that. Would definitely be a game changer if they stayed with the original plot line. 3mo

February was Frankenstein Month!

I read the book, watched a couple old related movies, you know … Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein … read an annotated version, listened to the audiobook, watched Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein & finally I read this manga by Junji Ito.

I loved Dean Koontz‘s Frankenstein series & some of the newer movies!

The book is a little dry but the narrator helped bring it to life.

Finished my reread of Frankenstein and oh my god I wish I didn't pick it up. I don't remember how I felt about the book when I read it for English class in high school but as an adult I find both Frankenstein and his monster insufferable. Going to cleanse my palate with an embroidery kit.

I read this book in class and it was not something that I would usually pick. However, every chapter was exiting and I am glad I read it. I really like the structure of the story; starting and ending with letters. I also like that the story feels like Frankenstein is telling you personally. Overall, Frankenstein by Mary Shelly is a really exiting and tragic book. I recommend it to anyone into science fiction! 🎖🎖🎖🎖

3✨ I struggle with classics so this one took me a long time to read. I like that I now know more about this story. A lot of it was what I have seen or heard. The poetic nature of the words pulling together was beautiful and challenging. I‘ll probably read it again to gain even further understanding in the future.
