Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Caf
Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Caf | Toshikazu Kawaguchi
In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a caf which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time... From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold comes a story of four new customers each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Cafe Funiculi Funicula's time-travelling offer. Among some faces that will be familiar to readers of Kawaguchi's previous novel, we will be introduced to: The man who goes back to see his best friend who died 22 years ago The son who was unable to attend his own mothers funeral The man who went back to see the girl who he could not marry The old detective who never gave his wife that gift... This beautiful, simple tale tells the story of people who must face up to their past, in order to move on with their lives. Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

Oof. Never a good sign when I have to push myself to continue. I guess this must do something for other people that it didn't do for me. Much like Kazuo Ishigiro's 'Klara and the Sun', I didn't feel invested and moved so much as emotionally manipulated, unsuccessfully.
Guilting someone via opinion of dead family members (which shows up TWICE) to modify behaviour during greiving process is reprehensible. Lack of communication: my least fave trope.

Decided to reread this one because I'm going to dive into the next two books and yup, still enjoyed it as much as the first time. Even though it has magical elements (#timetravel), it still does such an amazing job at keeping the focus on the characters, their struggles, and their relationships with each other. I'm curious to see what the sequel is about #fiction #Japanesefiction #japan

In a coffee shop in Japan there is a seat that can take you to the past. There are several rules including : 1. Nothing you say or do will change the present and 2. You must return to the present before your coffee gets cold. I loved the characters and the lesson! 5⭐️

I really like the premise of this book. I even like the “rules.” At times it was somewhat repetitive. I wish I had known this was a novelization of a play before I listened to it. I can easily imagine this occurring onstage. I agree with other reviewers who mentioned that there was no cat in the story even though there is a cat on the cover. The narrator has a very pleasant voice and is a good match for this novel.

Premise? Wonderful. Sense of place? Lovely. Everything else? A total mess. This book is frustratingly repetitive. Characters are not fleshed out and are often problematic—the woman with the body of a model who doesn‘t know she‘s beautiful and whose “work is her lover,” the disabled kind-hearted martyr, etc. After I found out this is actually a novelization of a play, it made more sense.

underground_bks Omg forgot my TOP complaint—there‘s nary a single cat in this book despite the cover art 😂 3mo
rwmg Yes, the cover is misleading. I loved the book but was supposed to be reading it for a challenge to read a book with a cat in it. No feline content at all 🙄 3mo

4.2 ⭐

My 1st reread since forever. I don't know why I always put aside the idea of reread maybe because of my mounting TBR, or I'm afraid I'll lose the feeling I got when I first read it. But I'm glad it's not true. I still feel it, I cried as hard.
Lesson learnt, not every story end happily, but how the story changed us as a person is what matters most.

It takes a special kind of book to make a person reflects on life, and this is it.

Weisubei Got my 2nd bingo, this is my best record so far for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks 3mo
SW-T I think rereads are like comfort food; sometimes you just need them. 3mo

Finishing the 2nd story in the book, I cried so hard.
The 1st story gives me hopeful love.
The 2nd story is a whole new world, a roller coaster of emotion. An unconditional love 😭😭😭

It's a reread for me, and yet I still feel the emotion so strongly.

I liked the time travel rules and the atmosphere of the cafe. I was attached to the characters and their outcomes; I just really wanted different outcomes for some of them. I had trouble relating to the familial guilt and pressure and I had trouble with a sick person being cast as such a cheerful martyr. These may be my own issues. I did enjoy the book.

Heartwarming stories of people at the Funiculi Funicular cafe where you can go back in time (or future) as long as you drink your coffee before it gets cold.

I liked it that as we follow 4 individual stories, at the same time, they are all linked together by Kazu and the owners of the cafe. We also find out more about the ghost who occupies the special seat.

A good follow up for the first book! Looking forward to the next stories to come!

I liked three of the four stories. There were two many time travel rules. There's just not enough time, before the coffee gets cold to really get into the story. Up next is Luck of the Titanic. #ThingsInCommon Asian main character.

Uncertain on this one...
It took me a long time to get into and I struggled to remember the characters.
I appreciated the second two stories much more than the first. I can see how this would be good as a screenplay or stage show, more so than a book.

What would you do if you could go back in time? Who would you want to meet? The rules are simple, but the most important one to remember is that the journey must end before the coffee gets cold. This book is a reminder that time is fleeting, and those moments can be so important, no matter how brief. Broken up into four vignettes, this book is a modern fable reminding us all that time is what you make of it.

rwmg And apparently there is a book 3 but it hasn't been translated yet

I started BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD last night, and I‘m shocked at the awful writing. Where was Kawaguchi‘s editor? They should‘ve talked him down from all the filters and redundant passages.

I CAN see how this would play well on stage or screen, though. No doubt he‘s way better at scripts than prose.

In a mysterious cafe you can go back in time but only have time till the coffee gets cold ( with other list of rules as well) The stories are related to people who take this coffee time travel & its aftermath. Most of the stories r heartwarming & emotional. I felt few parts r repetitive from book 1 & most of the characters are regretful about their past. Overall it‘s a good one to read with a hot cup of coffee. #doublespin #bookspinbingo

4 charming interlinked stories set in a cafe in Tokyo where you can go back in time. However:

1.Nothing you do will change events. Whatever has happened, will happen.

2. You cannot leave your seat in the cafe, so you can only meet people who have already been to the cafe.

3. You will return to the present when you have finished your coffee - and you MUST finish it before it gets cold.

However the author doesn't apply them consistently. 👎

rwmg Fusagi wants to give his wife a letter in the present so how can he have given it to her on her trip into the past? On her last visit to the cafe Kumi writes a letter to Hirai, but then Hirai goes back in time to meet her and they spend time talking until Kumi goes to the toilet and then leaves the cafe, so when did Kumi write the letter? 8mo
rwmg Having said that, the stories are charming and sweet, so I will give them a pick and continue with the second volume, since I bought them as a pair. 8mo
marleed I just can‘t figure out why no one poured their coffee into an insulated cup (thanks yeti!) for some extra time. Post Covid, I‘m not sitting in a coffee shop without my yeti mug - just in case ;) 8mo
rwmg @Marleed Somebody must have raised that point with the author. In the 2nd book, it says “Even if you find some way to retain the coffee's heat, it will have no effect and it will get cold anyway.“ 8mo

Have coffee, will time travel. This was a fun, surrealist novel about a coffee shop where time travel is possible from only one seat for only a few minutes and without having any effect on the future. It reads like a series of interconnected stories as we get to focus on different characters and relationships at the coffee shop. A fun, quick, and thoughtful read.

I enjoyed this short audiobook.

If there was a cafe near you that allowed you to travel back in time, would you do it?

What about traveling into the future? Just for a glimpse??

But don't forget...you have to return to the present before your coffee gets cold.

I admit, after reading this, I think about it every morning while sipping my coffee.

Ruthiella Honestly, I don‘t want to travel in either direction. I‘ve seen/read enough sci-fi to know time travel brings unwanted complications. 😆 Love the mug, BTW! 8mo

Tried book 1 & book 2 - not my cup of tea! It was too repetitive & had too many characters. Each character had a gut wrenching reason to travel back in time, the first couple of chapters were interesting and sad but then it just got too repetitive & I gave up.
