Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family | Thomas Mann
A Major Literary Event: a brilliant new translation of Thomas Mann's first great novel, one of the two for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1929.Buddenbrooks, first published in Germany in 1900, when Mann was only twenty-five, has become a classic of modem literature -- the story of four generations of a wealthy bourgeois family in northern Germany. With consummate skill, Mann draws a rounded picture of middle-class life: births and christenings; marriages, divorces, and deaths; successes and failures. These commonplace occurrences, intrinsically the same, vary slightly as they recur in each succeeding generation. Yet as the Buddenbrooks family eventually succumbs to the seductions of modernity -- seductions that are at variance with its own traditions -- its downfall becomes certain. In immensity of scope, richness of detail, and fullness of humanity, Buddenbrooks surpasses all other modem family chronicles; it has, indeed, proved a model for most of them. Judged as the greatest of Mann's novels by some critics, it is ranked as among the greatest by all. Thomas Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1929.From the Hardcover edition.

Nothing in this book should be surprising, and still I was surprised. It‘s a feat! After forty years and 730 pages, you feel you really know the family, and so the decline is devastating. Still, there is plenty of humor and insight to be found, as well as questions. Most troubling: What caused the decline? Was it inevitable or did the choices of the offspring gradually doom them?

Got my Round 4 #lmpbc book back, and spent a lovely afternoon reading all the great comments from @sprainedbrain @jmofo and @Butterfinger . Thank you so much ladies, and I am thrilled that you seemed to like this book as much as I did. Anytime you want to do another 20th Century Classics read, count me in!

I‘m blown away by this book... I was definitely not expecting to like it as much as I did. It‘s long, it‘s sad and depressing, but it‘s so very well-written and very readable. Considering it‘s translated from the German, that‘s really impressive. A family saga with some interesting characters. Hard to believe Mann was only 26 when this classic was published.

Thanks for sharing, Deborah! I enjoyed being part of Group F.

Well that was a humdinger...of sorts. I‘m inclined to be choosy about who I would recommend this book to, but I would love to discuss it with anyone who has read it. I was enjoying the writing a great deal but I am not much of a family drama person. But this book is much more than that, it just takes its time getting there. I wish I could read German.
Thank you @arubabookwoman for choosing this book for group F this round of #LMPBC

I'm glad I read it. I would think I knew what the author wanted to portray, but would be caught off guard. Mann added characters, but they wouldn't add to the plot line. I'm more confused about his purpose to writing it now than before I started. If you are interested in how a prestigious family lived in 19th century Germany, this is for you. On to you, @jmofo. @arubabookwoman, thank you for introducing me to Mann. @sprainedbrain happy New Year.

I love multigenerational family sagas! This one by a German author did not disappoint. It actually reads a little bit like a 19th century novel - sometimes, a bit too long, but enjoyable on the whole.

"Often, the outwards visible and material signs and symbols of happiness and success only show themselves when the process of decline has already set in." I believe this is Thomas Mann's message with this book. He delivers it with precision, talent, wit, and craftsmanship. Highly recommended!!! @hlgreenfield

Sarah83 Have you already read any other books dritten by him? 2y
hlgreenfield It really is one of the best novels I've ever read. He is an amazing writer! 2y

LauraBeth And by the time you've realized all the things, learned from all the mistakes, found the meaning of happiness - you're at the end of life 2y
Sarah83 I have several books, but I can't decide to start them. 😥 2y
Izai.Amorim @LauraBeth I don't agree with Mann's message and world view, only admire his craftsmanship and talent. His beliefs were very widespread in 19th century Europe, the whole decadent thing, the romantics, etc. I'm a more optimistic person, I believe that you can be happy and satisfied here and now, the challenge is to find out what you need. Most of the time we're looking for it at the wrong places. (edited) 2y

Mann's first novel is impressive; a family saga stretching through the latter half of the ninetheenth century and over several generations following the slowly decline of the family facing the advent of modernity. Mann pulls us in a world of stunning vitality, pieced together from births and funerals, weddings and divorces, recipes, gossip and humor. Fits the #FamilyAffair for day 10 #AugustGrrrl perfectly:)

@hlgreenfield Starting another one of my #secretsanta books. This edition has the original Buddenbrooks house on the cover. I also got a lovely historical postcard with the same house. Thomas Mann received his Nobel prize for this book (Nowadays they give the prize for the lifelong oeuvre, I guess). It's a reread. At the moment I have a professional interest in family sagas so it was a timely gift. Helena, you most have felt that I needed it. 👍

Sarah83 It's such a great book. 😍 2y

The Buddenbrooks is one of the upperclass families in 19th century Germany. Four generations, one family firm, all in the hands of the eldest son. Everyone obeys the rules of how a well-to-do family should behave. But time goes by and we witness the slow decline of the family traditions. Mann gives us an intimate portrait of their lives, so much that it sometimes made me feel uneasy and feel very sorry for their losses and sorrows. #1001books

My current long read is the Buddenbrooks. I've just watched a clip from the 1979 TV series on YouTube and discovered that I bought the exact same china at the church jumble sale last year as the Buddenbrook family uses for breakfast 😀☕️ it's not brilliant china, but it was cheap. I don't have the big tea / coffee pot, just cups and saucers and the sugar bowl in the shot.

"The Decline of a Family." Covering four generations of a German merchant family, Buddenbrooks portrays the ups and downs of family life in the 19th century and is a compelling read. Every character and action is realistically portrayed and Mann's writing is clear. With humour, drama, romance, loss, and strong family values, this book draws in a wide audience. I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone's list of classics!

"We are not separate, independent, self-subsisting individuals, but links in a chain; and it is inconceivable that we would be what we are without those who have preceded us and shown us the path that they themselves have scrupulously trod..."
