At times the young protagonist was so very irritating - intentionally. I thought: grow up young man. But the tales of the old woman, and the history of German exhales in LA was fascinating
A bit meta. This is a novel about a real person (Nobel prize winner Thomas Mann) who writes novels based off real people of his time.
These fictions always fascinate me and send me down Google rabbit holes. How much is true? I wonder if the real.human would have been mad about the book.
Overall the book is a bit slow, but covers a large time period, Mann's life before WWI through the Cold war. Lots of family and gov.politics. I liked it.
This is a beautiful and extremely well written book about memories and stories. This is not an, “edge of your seat, what‘s going to happen next” type of read, but it‘s also not boring. If you‘re in the mood for a book about stories, memories, family and perseverance this is it 👍
I recommend you listen to this one. The narrator is amazing!

Diving into my first COVID19-centric book, we‘ll see how it goes ? “Künstlers in Paradise” by Cathleen Schine sounds like an interesting premise; grandson comes for a “short visit” to see his grandmother in California, but it is 2020 and his visit suddenly has no end in sight. 3 years ago (almost to the day I think ?) the world slowed to a halt and I think I‘m mentally ready to revisit that time. I think. Maybe? We‘ll find out ? More to come ?
Ozzie keeps head butting my book. 😂 Not sure if that‘s the cat seal of approval because he‘s marking it or a sign of complete cat disdain!
New BookPage! Tagged novel (out March 14) sounds good as does the bookseller memoir featured on the cover, Once Upon a Tome. Forager: Field Notes for Surviving a Family Cult by Michelle Dowd was another memoir that caught my eye.
An imagined portrayal on the life of Thomas Mann whom I had heard of but never read. And now not sure I want to, hmm 🤔
It‘s been awhile posting on Litsy but finally on vacation and reading. ❤️
