I very much enjoyed this book. It‘s not only a murder mystery but a family drama, too. Loads of secrets which are slowly revealed. There‘s great insight into life in the outback. I‘m not sure it would suit me at all! It‘s atmospherically written and just a brilliantly gripping read. Highly recommended.

I‘m reading this for my local book club. This time a member suggested we each pick and submit two of our favourite books and then read as many of the ones we haven‘t read on the list as we wanted to. Next time we meet up (24 September) we have to let the club know what we thought of them. Hope that makes sense! I already had The Lost Man on my TBR pile, so thought I might as well start with that one!

I was really excited for this one after reading The Survivors for #authoramonth …this is more about the family drama than the mystery so the issue may have started with my expectations, but the middle of this book felt like a slog. But I liked Nathan & Xander, the brotherly Christmas brawl w/Bub & the setting in the rural outback.

I enjoy the way that this story of generational trauma unfolds, even though it's frustrating at times how obtuse the characters can be. They're realistic but maddening in the way that they jump to conclusions and make assumptions and keep secrets that are better revealed. I'm glad to know that "Outback teacher" is a possible career path (although not keen on 45C temps).

Last book read by this author until she writes another novel. I could say this was my least favorite amongst her novels. Maybe was that ending😳🤷🏽‍♀️ However, I like how she describes characters and places, very atmospheric. You feel that hot weather 🥵. I think the book blurb is prefect to describes the story: “three brothers, one death, no answers”👌 3.5/3.8⭐️

Catching up posting March reads today! This was the only Jane Harper I hadn't read, so it was my #AuthorAMonth selection for March. It had all the atmospheric qualities that Harper's books usually have, this one's landscape being remote, barren, hot, dry, and unforgiving. The characters were well drawn, and the mystery was engaging as usual. @Soubhiville

I think I'm in the minority here, but this one just wasn't for me, despite having really enjoyed some of Harper's other books. This story was just relentlessly depressing. With a strong focus on abuse and how that reverberates through a family even when the abuser is gone, plus some bonus content regarding rape, divorce, community ostracizing, depression, suicide, isolation, etc. I was just honestly sad the entire time I was reading this. ⬇

Cameron, middle son of the Bright family in the far far outback, is found dead miles from his well-stocked truck. It looks like an unpleasant suicide but why end it this way? His older brother Nathan, the town outcast for many years, has his own demons but manages to slowly put unusual pieces of information together to find out what happens—and it truly is a surprise! I did feel like things ended a little too well, everyone‘s problems solved. ⬇️

Started reading this book this morning. I really want to keep reading instead of getting to work, as it has been pretty awful lately, but alas, I have a bunch of meetings that are starting soon. Not enough coffee in the world for the day I'm about to have.

A beautifully written family tragedy The brutal landscape where walking to the end of the road can kill you. More than 15 mins in your car with no air con can kill you Also snakes dingoes and spiders The invisible flooding The nearest neighbour was 3 hrs drive away and you better have spare tyres petrol food water and a radio The doctor that came around every 6 months for the skin cancer clinic This family saga is wonderful tragic and beautiful.

Low pick. Not my usual genre but I needed a #setinAustralia for #52Books23 and wanted to stretch my comfort zone. I guess this is not just a whodunit but a didanyonedoitatall and a whydidithappen. The gradual reveal of convoluted backstory was both frustrating and interesting and I was satisfied with the ending.

Hubby picked up the library holds today, and I figured I should separate mine out before the kiddo dived into the bag. Tagged is for #52Books23 #setinAustralia and the other two are to do some cramming about perimenopause (yay! Plus two more should come in next week). Getting old is not for the faint of heart.

I had read a couple of Jane Harper books, so I looked for the next book when #Australia came up on the #FoodAndLit list

Instead I stumbled upon a deal for this stand alone. The ending did surprise me (though I imagine seasoned mystery readers might guess 😂)

A body is found by the Stockman‘s grave, out in the outback. It looks like an experienced land owner left his fully stocked car and wandered into the desert. But was it really what happened?

Another lazy weekend~

My third Jane Harper in as many days and I have NO SHAME! 😅 I think the thing I love most about her books is how Australia and the Australian Outback feel like an additional character. So completely tangible! I‘m only halfway through this one, but really loving it. 🇦🇺 #52bookclub23 #abookaboutsiblings

Jane Harper‘s standalone crime novel makes the most of both the oppressive nature of the Australian Outback and the loneliness of life out there to create a slow burn reveal of bad behaviour and family secrets. I particularly liked the slow reveal of Nathan and Cameron‘s backstory and characters, which worked very well and although the ending has a bit of a pat feel to it, I would definitely check out Harper‘s other books.

Set in the Australian Outback this is such an atmospheric book again by Jane Harper. When one of three brothers is found dead in the middle of nowhere, it raises many questions. How did he end up there, without his car or supplies? The small community starts suspecting each other. A very good psychological mystery!

Really enjoyed this mystery set in the heat and dry landscape of the Australian Outback. It could work well as a movie or miniseries. Entertaining, with twists and turns and even some romance.

Loved it. A man dies in the middle of nowhere and no one understands how or why. The plot starts out so focused and small and then opens up over time to reveal more characters & more complexities. A great slow burn.

Just getting into this and loving the set up. The premise is like a locked door mystery- except it takes place in Australia‘s outback.

I really enjoyed the slow boil of this one, and the heavy emphasis on the environment as a factor in not just the death but in the lives of the locals.

I loved this! Very tense and unsettling, I loved the setting and how the characters' secrets were slowly unveiled. I'll definitely be reading more from this author!

Legos are such a godsend when Mom would really like to just read her book... the kids are happily building a town!

I'm a huge Jane Harper fan. I love her writing style and the images it invokes. The stories are wonderful mysteries that slowly unravel the truth told by characters that are flawed and dealing with their emotions. The Lost Man did not disappoint.

Cameron is found dead at a gravesite in an isolated corner of the family's outback property. His car is not nearby, what is he doing there? And how did he get there?

A bit slow to start but it picked up and was a great story of family, pain, choices and redemption. Harper is such a great storyteller and I love learning about the Australian outback through her lens. Great on #audio #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Wow. I finished this book yesterday and am still thinking through the various layers of the story. This book is about the impact on a family when one member is found dead of dehydration & exposure to the elements on their property in the Australian outback. Thought provoking and beautifully written.

This author, once again, blew me out of the water. Originally heard of Jane Harper after I read “The Dry.” Was a huge fan of the writing and storytelling so I decided to give this book a whirl. Super stoked I did. The characters are relatable, warm, and genuine. Harper manages to flawlessly intertwine multiple themes that are sometimes hard to bring to light. The best part about this book is that it will have you guessing until the very last page

After loving “The Dry” I decided to give The Lost Man a read and I‘m glad I did. It‘s another excellent read. I feels similar to The Dry and I think this is why I enjoyed the original more. Despite this The Lost Man is still an excellent book filled with well written characters, intrigue and had me guessing until the end.

Spending tonight #audiojournaling to another of Jane Harpers brilliant Aussie crime novels. After The Dry, this is my favourite story. Set again in the bush, this time in QLD, it‘s a family drama on a large cattle property. When Cam, middle brother of three, is found dead miles away from his well stocked car, suspicions start to circulate until secrets & lies are dragged out into the light. Can you really trust family? Love the audio of this👍

The setting is a remote cattle farm in the Outback. Cam Bright is found dead of exposure 10 kilometers from his vehicle. An experienced local, no one can explain how this could have happened...unless it was murder. Great family drama and tension. Also a plus-a detective-less mystery told from the POV of the victim‘s older brother.
