Starting this classic in class now. It's a higher reading level than I'm used to and I'm still adjusting, but it seems pretty good. I have high hopes, because a friend of mine really likes it.
Charity's been sleeping with me all morning, and I had to include her in this. #catsoflitsy

I somehow made it through public schooling in the US and almost to age 50 without reading this one. I have now corrected that! I did see one of the movies (the DiCaprio one), and I appreciate how much more subtle the book is. So subtle, in fact, that I missed a major event and had to go back a bit to catch it. Tim Robbins reads this one and is superb, and there‘s also some very interesting FSF letters included at the end.

RIP Robert Redford 1936-2025 😢

There was music from my neighbor‘s house through the summer nights.
(This was the novel I first thought of in reference to the prompt)

I read this book in some form every year on this day, and every year I get something new out of it. This year I just felt old. There‘s no way I could go to all those parties and get up and sell bonds the next day.

I read The Great Gatsby every June. It‘s one of my favorite summer traditions. #Naturalitsy @AllDebooks @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit

Thanks for the tag @RaeLovesToRead !
1. I think the further in time you move from a particular decade or generation, the easier it is to reduce it to a set of characteristics, events, or images that come to be emblematic of the whole. In that sense, you can absolutely have a book that defines the popular view of a generation.
2. The Great Gatsby defines the Jazz Age and the 1920s.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView (thanks for the tag; you, too @Eggs! 🩵💙)
1. I can't say that ONE book can definitively define a decade, but it can certainly encapsulate it. And you usually know that because you can't imagine the book anywhere but in that decade. ROMEO AND JULIET can occur in any decade; THE GRAPES OF WRATH can't.
2. Near impossible for TGG to exist anywhere but in NYC in the Roaring 20s.

1. A few dollars and coins here and there but mostly I use my card. 🫣😅
2. I tagged The Great Gatsby. Gatsby believes that by acquiring riches, he will be able to woo/ win Daisy back. I‘d argue that wealth is part of Gatsby‘s downfall.

Thanks for the tag, @TheSpineView! 😍
1. I try to carry $20-40, just in case.
2. I think of wealth, I think of GATSBY. And yes, money is the downfall of it all. 💰
Play? @TheLudicReader @PageShifter @Deblovestoread

Thanks @TheSpineView for the #Two4Tuesday tag!🤗
1️⃣ Yes, I always carry some hidden cash “just in case” & small bills for tips & places like the library book store that only take cash.
2️⃣ Having just reread TGG last month, it‘s definitely a book where every character is affected by money. Old or new 💵shapes their love lives & relationships, social standing & overall perception of happiness.💰
Want to play along? Consider yourself tagged!🤗

For those who have read or re- read Fitzgerald‘s The Great Gatsby for its 100 years Anniversary,
The Double Bind is a great companion read with its nod to the classic.

Only 45/100 for this retired English teacher. 😱 Thanks to all of you who played, I am reprioritizing my TBR! Favorites today are above; hard to limit to just three.
What got me most about this list was how to rectify things like WAR & PEACE, CHARLOTTE'S WEB, 50 SHADES OF GREY, and THE TWILIGHT SERIES being on the SAME list! #whatthe 🤣
Here's the link again if you'd like to play: https://shorturl.at/SVh6e

Read the book after Ann Patchett recommended it on Instagram . She reads it once a year. I can see why it‘s considered a classic. I have seen the original movie. Found this copy in op shop today. 👏👏. Now have to find a copy of the first movie made with Ryan O‘Neil.

So in high school I absolutely did not like The Great Gatsby & thus over the years never picked up more Fitzgerald, content in my dislike. We had two #SundayBuddyRead books that put the author in a more favorable, sympathetic light & I decided it was time to go back again & reread TGG after a (cough) few decades of life 😉 & picked it as my #FictionalTraveler March pick for #BigCity. Surprise! I quite enjoyed the book this time. ⬇️

Headed to Hilo for the day for meetings. Starting the morning with coffee, a breakfast sandwich & a little reading. This one is for #FictionalTraveler March: #BigCity prompt.

A couple of #SundayBuddyRead books where F. Scott Fitzgerald is mentioned have made me want to reread The Great Gatsby again (my first time since high school) so I‘m making it my pick for #FictionalTraveler March: #BigCity
While I‘m reading the edition with the iconic blue cover, the 2013 movie tie-in cover & the movie itself have more than one beautiful #EveningGown soI‘m using it for today‘s #CoverStories prompt.

So not the brightest thief… 🙄🙃

#FeelinTheLove perhaps one of the greatest tales of #LoveLost Gatsby does everything to try to turn that around.

As I already mentioned - unexpected, flowery language. YAY!!! 🥰🥰🥰

I enjoyed this classic very much. It had been on my reading list for some time now and I wanted to read a easier version with my students, so I dived in. I did not know that the actual part surrounding Gatsby is this short, but I enjoyed the very detailed descriptions of his feelings. Fitzgerald used a very flowery language I didn‘t expect.

I‘m still opening my #LitSolace cards and savoring the notes & surprises. Thanks @BarkingMadRead That colorful bird sticker melted my heart. 🧡💚💛💙

A classic cover. 💙💙💙

A long overdue reread. I can‘t believe this would be on any high school reading list because what would a teen relate to in this novel?
I can‘t say I enjoyed Fitzgerald‘s writing style, but I did enjoy examination of Nick‘s loss of innocence about humanity and the American promise of infinite progress.

#AboutABook #WithSadEnding One of the saddest, I think .

“Do you always wait for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always wait for the longest day of the year and then miss it.”
My summer solstice tradition is to read this book every year. This year we listened to it in the car while driving back from vacation.
Always a favorite of mine, and a perfect summer book.

I love these questions. Here goes:
🌹Authors: Lauren Groff, Curtis Sittenfeld, Angela Davis; Titles: The Color Purple, O Caledonia, Mrs. Caliban, Infinite Jest, Don Quixote
🌼 Stoner
🌺 The Great Gatsby, but not in a good way. I think it's the perfect book to read during middle age, not as a teen 🙃

@Eggs (thanks for the tag! 😘)
1. My high school copy of THE GREAT GATSBY. All my notes as a 16-year-old are still in it. I have kept it through the years (now 42 years old). It is held together with a rubber band. 💚
2. That would be early 1980s: all books by Sidney Sheldon, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosamond du Jardin, and my precious Harlequin romances.
3. THE SECRET GARDEN.
Play @PageShifter, @Catiewithac?

Jake Gyllenhaal does a fantastic job. Loved every minute of it and I didn‘t speed it up once! (Always a good sign 😂)

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that‘s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . .And one fine morning-
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
