The Grapes of Wrath | John Steinbeck

Pickpick

I didn't intend to read The Grapes of Wrath this year, but I've always meant to and @BarkingMadRead and the #hashtagbrigade reading it in November seemed like a perfect opportunity. It's a heavy book made all the more heavy by how timely it is right now. Steinbeck's writing is amazing. It's been several years since I read East of Eden and I'm thinking it may be time for a reread soon.

Panpan

Depressing slog. Put this in the category of its a classic, I never have to read again. But thank you @BarkingMadRead for the #HashtagBrigade as an Okie I wanted to read.

HOWEVER, Sallisaw is actually closer to Arkansas while it was affected by The Depression it WASN'T part of the Dust Bowl. It always bugs me when authors get State wrong. There's a very big difference between the flat of the panhandle and green country of eastern Oklahoma. 📍

BarkingMadRead Ohhhhh that‘s interesting 4d
dabbe Oklahoma is quite misunderstood, isn't it. I need to revisit the musical OKLAHOMA for a pick-me-up about this lovely state. “There's a bright golden haze on the meadow ....“ 💚💚💚 3d

Mehso-so

I gotta say “so-so”. Sure the writing is beautiful, but would I recommend it to anyone? No. It‘s too much. Even though the ending wasn‘t what I expected- it wasn‘t enough to encourage others to get there.

ElizaMarie Wow!!! Didn't expect that! 4d
BarbaraJean I knew about the controversial ending, but I didn‘t realize it would be the ending ending. Like the last scene. All of this and then THAT. I can‘t. And what was up with Rose of Sharon‘s little mysterious smile?!? 😳 That took it over the edge from uncomfortable to creepy. Still. This was a relentlessly sad and infuriating masterpiece. 4d

eeclayton #mysoulhurtstoo What a heartbreaking story. Thanks @BarkingMadRead and #HashtagBrigade for this buddy read. It's a beautifully written and tragically relevant book, but I wouldn't have been able to finish it if it wasn't for you. 4d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I had to finish before Thanksgiving, I didn't want to be reading with family here. My reaction was WTF? That's it? 4d
lauraisntwilder While the ending is unexpected, Steinbeck was setting us up for something like that the whole time. It's another example of how the poor are only able to rely on other poor people, to the point of sacrificing their own comfort or propriety. There are no strangers anymore and everyone is family. I think Rose of Sharon is glad for something good to come from her heartbreak. Just my take. What a book!!! 4d
Bookwormjillk I had remembered the ending but not the scene with Uncle John and the baby. That hit me hard this read. Also reading this made want to try to do better about my bitterness towards my husband‘s cousin living in my basement 😂 Thanks as always @BarkingMadRead looking forward to starting something short tomorrow. 4d
dabbe I just couldn't reread it this time. After having to teach it in high school (as well as OF MICE AND MEN), I couldn't face the bleakness this time. But, oh, how I love Steinbeck's writing. Here's for a short read in December! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your on-point #hashtags--as always. 🩵☃️💙 3d
KAO I had never read this, and I‘m so glad I did it this month with you all. I found the writing truly wonderful, even though the unfolding of events really brought heartbreak after heartbreak. I do wish Steinbeck could have given us more hope for these tough characters at the end. Tragic! 3d
Bklover Well. I‘m glad I read it. @BarkingMadRead made it possible, but I am glad it‘s over. Beautiful writing. East of Eden I could read again- this one nope. Thanks @BarkingMadRead ❤️ 3d
KAO @Bklover I loved East of Eden too—and agree that I could read it again. This Grapes of Wrath journey was just so endlessly sad. I‘m still glad that I read it though. 2d

eeclayton I loved that Ruthie wasn't scolded too harshly. In stressful situations, adults sometimes forget that kids are just kids, and it's nice that the mother here didn't. 5d
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - Right? And Tom wasn't mad, either - he literally was just like “kids say stuff when they get mad“ I haven't agreed with everything the Joads have done, but I admire the way that they are loyal to one another. 5d

"The great owners ignored the three cries of history. The land fell into fewer hands, the number of the dispossessed increased, and every effort of the great owners was directed at repression. Cuilin I‘ll admit it, I‘m glad this was a short chapter cause I‘m not yet connecting with this book. 1mo
lil1inblue #youarenottheonlyonestressingoveraturtle I gasped audibly when he got hit. 1mo
BarbaraJean I was SO invested in the turtle. Relief when the first car missed him. Shocked when the truck swerved to intentionally hit him! Relief again when he made it across. I‘m going to need future turtle updates, Steinbeck. 1mo
SamAnne I‘m looking forward to this reread. I‘ve also been doing a slow read of East of Eden. I‘m on a 6 week road trip and have traveled through southern Central Valley, the orange groves, Visalia, where Steinbeck traveled and spent in before writing GOW. 1mo
SamAnne And I loved a chapter devoted to the trials and tribulations of a turtle. Perseverance! 1mo
lauraisntwilder I tried to read this once WAY before I was ready and didn't finish. It's been so long that I'd just about convinced myself that I made up the turtle chapter! I've since read and enjoyed East of Eden, so I should give this one another try 1mo
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder would you like me to add you to the tag list? We are reading a chapter a day, and the first few were very short! It would be easy to catch up 1mo
willaful So shocked! People, ugh. 1mo
willaful I guess it makes a great metaphor though. 1mo
Bklover Poor turtle. 🐢 but he‘s hanging on! 1mo
ElizaMarie Because he writes so beautifully, I was totally invested in this turtle. Also, people are shitty 1mo

Bklover Gotta tell you- I was talking to my daughter and telling her we‘re reading The Grapes of Wrath. I just said it was the Litsy group and she wanted to know if that‘s the group with all the women fainting. Made me laugh. 😆 1mo

TheAromaofBooks When I read this several years ago, I remember enjoying the not-story chapters even more than the story chapters. I think Steinbeck's writing is so beautiful. 1mo
dabbe Oh, this novel. My heart weeps not just at the story of the Joads but at Steinbeck's sublime writing. 🩶🖤🩶 1mo
BookNAround I love that so many people like this book so much. It 100% is not for me (I loathe it). In fact, no Steinbeck book I‘ve ever read has been for me (I do still have high hopes for Travels with Charley though). 😂 1mo

ElizaMarie I am behind - I ended up getting the Audio, because I went everywhere BUT a bookstore this weekend. Anyway, listening to Chapter 1 - I can tell I am going to enjoy this so far. It feels ominous (Also kinda going in blind, never tried to read it, never saw any of the screen adaptation - not sure how many there are). Excited to be in this group! 1mo

Ok #hashtagbrigade here is November‘s book! If you want to join us for a chapter a day, drop a comment below. But remember, my hashtags are often ridiculous and always chapter spoilers, so read the chapter before you read my post each day! Everyone is welcome! I have two groups of tags, one for the individual book, and one for monthly reminder list, so be sure to let me know if you need to be on one of my lists!

BarkingMadRead @SamAnne omg I haven‘t read East of Eden since high school when I was on my James Dean kick! Nope. That‘s wrong. I reread it last year 🤣 (edited) 1mo
SamAnne @BarkingMadRead I‘ve read a lot of Steinbeck but weirdly not East of Eden! Loving it. 1mo
Ruthiella I‘m going to sit this one out. I read it a few years ago. It‘s very good and deservedly a classic. 1mo
BarbaraJean Why must you tempt me so?!? 😂 I own it; I‘ve never read it; I was thinking about using it for the final #ClassicsChallenge2025 prompt but decided I didn‘t have room in my reading lineup for it in the last few months of the year. Add me to the tag list; I‘ll make room. 😂😂 (edited) 1mo

Pickpick

4/5
My book club was reading The Four Winds, which I had already read, so instead I picked up The Grapes of Wrath.
I honestly prefer the latter which offers more characters, more depths, more complexity. It's a very interesting read about a very difficult time. Well-written, realistic.

Bailedbailed

I'm so disappointed to bail on my #Bookedintime selection. I adore the landscape and nature descriptions. However, it does feel overly preachy, and I'm just not in the right mindset atm to persevere. I will pick it up to try again, at some point. I do feel the fault is mine, not the book.

@Cuilin @dabbe

Cuilin Oh, I totally get it. I‘m struggling with the puritanical preaching in Little Women right now. Grateful that it‘s only a chapter a day. I DNF‘d my book for this month too. I‘m going to see if I can get something else but yeah, I get it. #HailTheBail 🙌 1y

We follow the displaced Joad family as they make the trek west in search of work and a new home during the Great Depression. Published in 1939, the book feels eerily familiar today - roiling social divisions, vast gaps in wealth/opportunity between rich and poor, the anger hurled at the migrants. Heartbreaking, yes. But the Joads are rendered with such dignity and tenderness that you want to see them through all the hardships you know are coming.

What an amazing and devastating book. It took me a while to get into but from halfway through, it just built and built.
There are so many similarities between these times and today. Corporate greed and hate of others continue. We forget everyone is human, living and/or struggling with their own lives.
What a wonderful read. What wonderful strength and love among those with so little. I wish everyone read and reflected on this book.
