The Rebel Nun | Marj Charlier

I decided on The Rebel Nun for #BookedInTime for the #EarlyMedieval theme and it's been sitting on my wishlist since January '24.

Two days ago I'm scrolling through ig and the cover catches my eye on a post from one of my local indie bookstores for an author signing on 9/26. I couldn't believe that not only would I finally get a copy, and meet the author, but that she lives in my city 💞

Now one of these days I'll actually read it 😂

Cuilin There‘s reading books, ordering books, waiting for books, in the mood for a certain book, and organizing books. Different hobbies, all valid!! It‘s time will come. 👊🫶👏 looks good 👍 17h

Mehso-so

catch up for #bookedintime. I recommend all note the TW. the racism and violence is almost relentless. Secondlyit‘s quite slow and overly hung up on descriptions of place (and I usually like that!). We follow William Thornhill from a life of nothing in London through some successes to when he loses it all again and is shipped to Australia. What then follows is he and his wife finding their way inc. the horrific interactions with the native ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader Population. Thorhill is a disappointment and gala in worth the crowd even though you are never very sure he has the same revulsion some of the other men seem to suffer from. Not easy to read or an easy one 7d
CarolynM I bailed on this one. I just don‘t like Kate Grenville. 6d
Itchyfeetreader That makes me feel better @CarolynM something certainly didn‘t click for me 6d

Mehso-so

Bjarni is sent into exile for 5 years and spends the time working as a mercenary in the Irish Sea and Scotland.

This was the author's last book, left unfinished at the time of her death, but unfinished in the sense of unpolished rather than incomplete. It does show in that I found it didn't hold my interest as much as her Roman novels. The world building and insight into Viking life and customs was good, but the story itself was rather meh.

Cuilin Sounds like an interesting read if a little meh. Vikings ✅ another prompt completed 🎉 2w

Continuing to catch up on my #bookedintime @Cuilin is a complex character, easy to love but also to see her faults and where she is taking herself. A story of love and hope but also arrogance and fear. There is an elpheba- esque way she is creating her later problems and legacy

I am making an effort to catch up on missed #bookedintime @Cuilin and thought this middle grade fiction might be the way to do it. talk about a not just for children! 3 siblings a year into the blight take to the road after their mother doesn‘t come back from trying to find their dad after the death of their youngest sibling. Life on the road is incredibly hard and starvation is near, yet they also see food being exported. A shameful truth.

Cuilin Such a good book! It was a part of the primary curriculum in Ireland. I‘m not sure if it still is. 3w

rwmg Starting “The Sword Song of Bjarni Sigurdson“ (aka “Sword Song“) about a 16-year old Viking who is sent into exile and travels in the Irish Sea and the Western Isles of Scotland. 2w
Cuilin @rwmg I‘ll have to check that one out. I thought I‘d like the book I‘m reading. There were some beautiful descriptions and then it just got way too bloody. 2w

rwmg @Cuilin Our hero is with one group of Vikings waiting to ambush another group but so far there hasn't been anything to put off anyone who is gore adverse 2w
Cuilin @rwmg Thanks, I may try that one, with the state of the world right now I‘m having a hard time reading anything too dark and destructive. 2w
rwmg @Cuilin I'm about 2/3 of the way through. I don't know what your limits are but while obviously there is a certain level of violence with killings and maiming in battle (these ARE Vikings after all), the author doesn't revel in gore. 2w

Amiable Great list! Thanks for posting! 2mo
Cuilin @julieclair oh my gosh I would love to see this list, but I‘m not on Instagram. I wonder if there‘s any other way to see it, we could get some inspiration for #BookedInTime. 2mo
Texreader @Cuilin I poked around and couldn‘t find this posted anywhere on the net. I‘ll see if there‘s only a few pages I can post them here. I think a lot of folks who are not on instagram would like to see these recommendations 2mo
