I was at the hairdresser yesterday and they had Monocle issue 164, June 2023, art special, inside they had an interview with Atwood, and it says:
“The American Library Association lists The Handmaid‘s Tale as one of the country‘s most regularly banned books; to illustrate the point, Penguin Random House even produced a special edition of the novel made from fireproof paper and filmed the author blasting it with a frame-thrower.”

I had no idea.

(1985) Here's another in my list of books-I've-sometimes-pretended-to have-read-already. It's brilliant, chilling, and holy dystopia Batman it feels more relevant now than I imagine it would have done in 1985.

Good news: I‘m finally reading this after owning it for 5+ years. This is actually the second copy I‘ve purchased, after giving the first unread copy to a friend. 😅 I demolished the first half of it all in one go last night. Such an addictive and chilling read. 🖤

I have a weakness for epistolary novels, but I sometimes forget that in addition to the traditional exchange of #letters💌 they also include a whole range of other forms of documents and communications. I think it‘s fascinating that the tagged book (one of my favorite of all time) makes lists of epistolary novels, when you don‘t learn till the epilogue that it‘s being told as one. #MayMontage @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I think today is a day for another #unpopularopinion I read The Handmaid‘s Tale when it was first published. Actually, I only tried to read it. If I had known what #DNF meant back then that‘s what I did. It seems like everyone thinks this is one of the greatest books ever written. I understand that it was groundbreaking. It seems more prescient now than ever. But I just didn‘t like the book. I‘ve never read another #MargaretAtwood book. (cont)⬇️

Why have I waited so long to read this?! I have been moved by many books in my lifetime, but this was the first one that drained me emotionally. The Handmaid's Tale was absolutely horrifying to read - scarier than any of the Stephen King's I have read by flashlight.

While I'm sure that Gilead was terrifying to think about in the 80s, I believe that it's much more terrifying today once you're aware of how close we might be to our own Gilead...

One of the most beautifully illustrated graphic novels that I have read in a long time. As disturbing as the story is and consequently the illustrations, one cannot help but enjoy the artwork. I hope to see more of Renée Nault‘s work in the near future.

I wasn‘t sure this book could be turned into a graphic novel and still tell the tale like Atwood wrote it. I was wrong!

Offred outfit was accidental, believe it or not 🤣

Took myself on a field trip today to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. I was tickled to see this addition to the culture section at the National History Museum.

I love bookshelves with free but used books, a treasure chest for bookworms. I found this one and what an incredible book, everything so vividly described, I felt like I was there, in this horrifying world. Terrifying, dark, and emotional story of a woman trapped in an unthinkable situation and all her memories and desires to reunite with her family makes this a must read book for everybody.

This is the 3rd time I have read this book and each time a different memory of the book stays with me. The 1st time, it was the horror of the breeding ceremony. I was a teenager at the time. The 2nd time, I convinced myself of a ending/storyline that isn‘t in the book. Now this 3rd time; I‘m reading it as one of the banned books on this season of Book Interrupted and realizing how scary the potential of something like this actually happening is.

Phenomenal! Amazing how Margaret Atwood created a dystopian novel like this. Such a creative mind! And to think the book was published in the 80s. Her views of the future is still appropriate even today.

With the different debates and decision concerning women‘s body/rights to abortion.This book gives us a glimpse of the futur. I‘m still trying to finish the tv series.

Thoughts: TERRIFYING. I am not a huge fan of dystopian novels for that one word: terrifying. As someone who prefers film noir about stories in the past, seeing what the future might hold is frightening. Atwood has a way of making me care, and Offred was stunningly portrayed as the complex character she is: she goes along with society but shuns it inwardly. A must read in today's crazy world.

My daughter gave it to me and insisted I read. She‘s in school for a Sociology Degree. I definitely felt like I could sit in a sociology class and have long discussions about this and possible outcomes. It also reminded me of where some people may develop global theories such as those that uprised during the pandemic. Descriptive and unique writing, distinctive imagery and very thought provoking. Curious now how the show is and how it concludes

Finished my first #trappedonanisland book. I wish I could say I loved it, but that would be a lie. I think the issue is that this doesn't make for a good audiobook. I have this marked to actually go back and read the book. I do this sometimes with certain books. Sometimes the narrative lacks dialogue and I lose interest.

Many would be familiar with the novel, and for those who haven‘t read the original text, (ahem, like me) would also have some passing knowledge of it, especially after the much publicised Hulu adaptation. I thought this graphic novel take by Renée Nault is a nice cheat for me to tick off my TBR list. The artwork cleverly uses colours and visual symbols to give an unsettling feeling. I could follow the story, so ⬇️

The perfect time to read this one.
Brutal and poetic.

This book sat on my chest and clouded my days. I had a hard time leaving the world Ms. Atwood created once I put the book down. Everyone should read this haunted and depressing book. Mayday

Damn, I really picked the wrong time to read this graphic novel. It hits especially hard this week. 💔🤬 But, I am really curious to see how the graphic novel holds up to the book.

“We slept in what had once been the gymnasium.” -Atwood. The ominous tone of this story of women valued only for their fertility is frighteningly appropriate! Anyone who can get pregnant in America lost today. People of color and poor folks will of course pay the highest price. Rape survivors will be re-victimized when forced to carry their rapist‘s child. What a contradiction; Women are protected. Women are vessels. Women are safe. Women are for breeding… I found myself thinking back and forth from sounds alright to sounds restricting. Kinda see todays relevance; govt. controlling women‘s bodies. Even with the odd writing, it was near impossible to put down. Offred‘s story hurt most when she reminisced the before yet stayed the Handmaid. So indoctrinated herself. Incredible it was published 1985

Had to dig this book up because of where the US appears to be headed. It‘s startling to think this book was written on 1985 for a period in 2005. The book feels likes it‘s own contradiction; women are more protected, yet their only viable to the world as long as they can make babies. Still feeling it out, but very gripping either way
