The Blind Assassin
The Blind Assassin: A Novel | Margaret Atwood
The Blind Assassin opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental. But just as the reader expects to settle into Laura?s story, Atwood introduces a novel-within-a-novel. Entitled The Blind Assassin, it is a science fiction story told by two unnamed lovers who meet in dingy backstreet rooms. When we return to Iris, it is through a 1947 newspaper article announcing the discovery of a sailboat carrying the dead body of her husband, a distinguished industrialist. Brilliantly weaving together such seemingly disparate elements, Atwood creates a world of astonishing vision and unforgettable impact. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Wow, after 7 months of reading & rereading The Blind Assassin I finally finished it whilst tidying & cataloguing my bookshelves.
Wow, because the ending was unexpected. I have been thinking about these characters all day since I finished it. I miss them, as I usually do when I complete a book, but I'm replaying lines & conversations trying to put all of the pieces together. I think I'm going to have to read the last juicy quarter again!

SamAnne A used copy has been on my shelf for years. I will put it closer to the bedside. 5d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes... I read this one last year, such a great twisty little story...and yes, it sticks with you! 5d
JackOBotts A wonderful novel. So glad you enjoyed! 5d

Lifeisasnap You have a wonderful collection of books. 5d
Curiouser_and_curiouser @SamAnne oh wonderful. Choose a period in your life where you can give this book time. I hope you enjoy it. I wish I had my own hardcopy. I had to borrow and reserve and reborrow a number of times and same as the audiobook. I will always look for it on my travels to second hand shops. 5d
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Lifeisasnap Thank you so very much. Would you believe they all are carefully double stacked to use the most space on each shelf. I love browsing through them and toying with which I should read next. I have so many, if only I was a speed reader! But I plan to enjoy my books as much as possible and share whenever I can. Can't wait for some down time in January! 5d
Lcsmcat I loved this one. I think a reread might be in order. 4d
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Lcsmcat Yes, I wonder if I'll ever attempt to read this one again. I feel like I've read it 3 times as it is, as I constantly went back and re-read chapters and parts most of the way through, and I'm still going on re-reading the last few chapters in the book. Good luck with the re-read. How long has it been? 4d
Lcsmcat Maybe 8 years? I‘m not sure. 4d
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Lcsmcat That sounds like a good length of time between reads 🙂. I'm reading The Power of One as well as Memoirs of a Geisha after 20 years from when I first read them both. Loving reliving their stories, so familiar yet so many details I'd forgotten. 4d

I think Atwood is one of our most iconic living authors. One of my early favorite authors when I started getting into reading as an adult.
@Cinfhen

readordierachel Yes! Great choice. 1mo
Cinfhen Aside from this Testaments debacle I agree, she is iconic and deserves all the accolades but not this year‘s Booker Prize 🤪 1mo
Billypar @readordierachel Definitely a literary rockstar 🙄🎸 1mo

Billypar @Cinfhen She's probably my second-most read author but I feel disconnected from all the hype - I want to read it eventually, but there are probably still a few older ones of hers I'd read first. 1mo
Cinfhen I need to read Alia Grace this year!!!! 1mo
readordierachel @Cinfhen You do! Alias Grace is so good. 1mo
Cinfhen @readordierachel hoping to fit it into a challenge box this year!‘maybe #BottomOfYourTBR #Booked2020 1mo
Billypar @Cinfhen @readordierachel Weirdly, I'm not a huge Alias Grace fan - I liked it, just not compared to her others (but I'm definitely in the minority on this!). I think my top three are Blind Assassin, Oryx & Crake, and Cat's Eye. 1mo
readordierachel Interesting! I've not read Blind Assassin or Cat's Eye yet (I know, I know, and I call myself a fan). I do love the MaddAddam trilogy, def more than Alias Grace, but I still thought the latter was really good. It has a different feel though. Maybe because it's based on a true story? 1mo
Billypar @readordierachel Oh, I'm jealous - you've got two really good ones in store! I read all my Atwoods close together (around 2009-2013) so I mostly just remember my broad impressions and not a ton of specifics to back them up. Though maybe the same could be said about what I read last year, lol 😶 1mo
readordierachel Ha! Same. 1mo
Cinfhen Cat‘s Eye is on my list too and The Blind Assassin was fantastic @readordierachel 1mo

Twinning!
My number's coming up on the copy of this book from one Library Municipality, so luckily I am new member of a neighboring Municipality (after moving house recently I joined my new local library). So I can return the due one & keep reading!!

I must say, that after reading the first copy (clearly in very new condition) the second copy I've borrowed looks & feels quite well read.
I think I might have changed my views on old vs new books...

Ok, I've only got 2 weeks before this book is due back.
I've had it for 14 weeks and have only made it a 1/3 of the way through, although I must say, I'm really enjoying it and feel quite invested in the family story so far.
Now that I've come this far, I hope I can get through a decent chunk before Return Day!! But with Halloween looming I'm afraid my work will take my focus over the next 2 weeks.
I might consider a personal Atwood collection 😊

JackOBotts This book is a favorite of mine. Good luck & enjoy! 2mo
Lcsmcat It‘s worth renewing if you can. 2mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser Thank you @JackOBotts , glad to hear you enjoyed it! The more Atwood I read the more I feel like I'd like my own personal collection to have right here at home. Future goals 😉 2mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Lcsmcat oh yeah, I fully intend on borrowing this book again, unless by some miracle I finish it within the next 14 days! I've come this far, I don't think I'd be able to just let this one go. 2mo

"Do I mean to say he didn't love her? Not at all. He loved her; in some ways he was devoted to her. But he couldn't reach her, and it was the same on her side. It was as if they'd drunk some fatal potion that would keep them forever apart, even though they lived in the same house, ate at the same table, slept in the same bed.
What would that be like-to long, to yearn for one who is right there before your eyes, day in and day out? I'll never know"

Ok, so I'm still reading this book, after 3 months
I feel like this might be my 4th time round. I got halfway through on audio but as it was getting good, I had many questions & I thought perhaps Id missed important details. So I began it again, on audio. It was suggested I read a physical copy to gain a better understanding so I'm doing that. I'm only 100 pages in & I'm taking notes this time. Yes, I'm getting it now, backed up 3rd time w/audio!

I listened to this on audio today for about 4 hours whilst I gave my bedroom a deep clean. I've been listening to it in short spurts for last 2 months & today I reached my renewal limit. I can see how just a few more chapters has changed my opinion of the book. Realizing I am not able to renew the audiobook tomorrow I just reserved a hard copy at my library. Can't wait to pick it up, I think I will enjoy reading it even more than listening to it

LiteraryinLititz Great job cleaning! 4mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser Thank you @LiteraryinLititz , it was very therapeutic. My mums house was finally sold and settled last Friday so after 2 years of stress in the move and sale of the house, which I had to manage, I am finally feeling myself again. Today I gave myself time and energy, which I haven't done in a very long time. I am enjoying being in bed reading tonight seeing everything so fresh and tidy. Thanks for your support xx 4mo

Curiouser_and_curiouser @CafeMom yes me too! I've just discovered Atwood only a few months ago and I'm loving exploring through her novels. I'm 3.5 hours into this audiobook but it's just not grabbing me.
Have you read this and what do you think?
Should I keep going?

violabrain I LOVED this book! It does take a bit to get into, but it‘s absolutely brilliant the way it‘s constructed and definitely worth it to keep reading. :) 5mo
Lcsmcat Yes, you should keep going! It‘s brilliant. You might want a print version if the audiobook isn‘t working for you. 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @violabrain ok, thanks so much for the encouragement! I am perhaps missing some details here and there as I usually listen whilst I'm driving, and I'm feel confused sometimes, so I might take it back to the start and start again so I'm more grounded in what's going on. Thank you 😊 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Lcsmcat oh yeah, that's a great idea, I do feel a little disconnected from the story as I usually listen to it whilst I'm driving, so yeah, a physical novel might help where I can flip pages back and forth to reread some parts when I feel a little lost. Thank you for your encouragement 🤗 5mo

Only just a so-so (and I‘m being generous) due to me enjoying the chapters telling the history of sisters Iris and Laura. What I didn‘t enjoy at all were the chapters about the blind assassin (the story within the story) which I found tedious and for the most part, unnecessary. I feel this book could‘ve been great without these chapters, instead they made it rather tiresome. On a positive note, the narrator was very good ⭐️⭐️

Bailedbailed

I‘m quickly coming to the conclusion that Margaret Atwood is not for me. I did, however, somewhat enjoy The Handmaid‘s Tale.

BittersweetBooks I haven‘t read anything by her yet 😳 But I have a few of her books on my TBR shelf. Why don‘t you enjoy her? I have a feeling I may feel the same. 9mo
Dolly @BittersweetBooks I read The Heart goes Last, & Handmaid‘s. Both had a couple moments where they lost credibility for me but were good. The Year of the Flood-I didn‘t buy the storyline at all. It was too far fetched. I honestly don‘t remember why I bailed here but I know it didn‘t hold my interest and it had to be returned. I have several more to try. At this point in life I don‘t hesitate to dnf. Give them a try you may like them. 9mo
Cathythoughts I‘m not sure if she is for me either .... but this , your tagged one was my favorite 9mo

Though sometimes a bit tedious, overall a very clever and fulfilling read. It always fascinates me how intense Atwoods characters and settings are and how uncomfortable she can make me feel. It took me some time to get into the rhythm of the book and I feel it could have done with 200 pages less, but Atwoods brilliant use of language alone will make up for any difficulties.

This is a story of two sisters, and a novel within a novel, that makes you wonder what it means to be a #creator. A narrative told from one perspective never tells you the whole story and Atwood as a writer imaginatively digs into all the layers and complexity inherent within the concept. I decided to start reading books off my own shelves rather than just library books. In alphabetical order by author, this was the first one. It has started off with a “BANG”! Love it!

BarbaraBB It‘s so good! Enjoy! 13mo
Joyfulmimi I am so glad and excited @BarbaraBB 13mo
CoffeeNBooks I love Margaret Atwood, and I have this on my shelf, but I haven't gotten to it yet. 13mo

F I N A L L Y 👏👏👏 another Atwood book I loved! Since reading and loving The Handmaid‘s Tale I haven‘t been as lucky with my Atwood-reading. But this book was amazing! Intricate, delicately hinting of dark secrets, beautifully written, and full of interesting musings about age, marriage, women‘s place in society and so much more. I‘ll be thinking about this for a long time!

Also, it works for #Booked2018 #MCover70

Cinfhen Great choice!!! And I agree, a brilliant read💕💕💕💕 beautiful edition 😍 13mo
BarbaraBB I agree too, I loved this one. I am not always happy with her books either but I loved The Handmaids Tale as well as Alias Grace, have you tried that one? 13mo
Emilymdxn This is my favourite Atwood!! I also adore the Penelopiad 13mo

sebrittainclark I love the cover! 13mo
zsuzsanna_reads Robber Bride, Cat's Eyes, Bodily Harm, The Heart Goes Last, Lady Oracle, Penelopiad. Or is it quicker to list the ones I didn't like 😁? Yet to read the maddaddam trilogy somehow. 13mo
Avanders Beautiful edition! 13mo
4thhouseontheleft Have you tried The Robber Bride yet? That‘s a good one since you liked this one. 13mo
JennyM Beautiful cover, and always a treat to see your selves. Hope you‘ve had a good week 😘 13mo
LeahBergen One of my favourites! 13mo
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen it was so good! I went back to the #BlindAssassinBuddyRead posts from last year after I finished and it almost felt like discussing it with you all, only in my head 😂😂 @BarbaraBB @Emilymdxn both are very high on my list! @sebrittain @Avanders it is quite stunning! 13mo
Kalalalatja @zsuzsanna_reads I have read Robber Bride and The Heart Goes Last from the ones you list, and both were fine, but they didn‘t blow me away. I definitely want to try the Maddaddam trilogy! @4thhouseontheleft I did, and it didn‘t wow me. I read that after Handmaid‘s Tale, which just set the bar really high for Atwood, imo, and I didn‘t feel like Robber Bride could live up to that 13mo
Kalalalatja @JennyM thank you! 💕 my mood has definitely been better this week, hope you have a good week too! @LeahBergen it really is something, isn‘t it? 👏👏 13mo
Cinfhen I‘m happy you went back to the buddy read questions!!! @JenP did a fantastic job with hosting ~ I‘m waiting for her to lead the Alias Grace buddy read 😜 13mo
Centique I‘m so glad you loved it! It blew me away too. I‘m worried about which one of hers to read next now because I‘ve only read this one and Handmaids Tale! I‘ve got Hagseed on my shelf so it might be that. 🤞🤞 13mo
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen I would definitely join that buddy read! 👏👏 @Centique Hagseed was okay for me, and I really liked the interpretation of The Tempest 👍 13mo

My stack of October reads - I listened to two audios, which were both great, read 9 print books, and I‘m halfway through the tagged book, which I‘m really enjoying!

October has been up and down for me, both in life and in my reading, but I‘m hoping November will be better. And considering it is my birthday in November and I have a lot of good things planned, I‘m pretty optimistic! 🤞
