You can‘t make an omelette without breaking eggs, is what he says. We thought we could do better.

Better? I say in a small voice. How can he think this is better?

Better never means better for everyone, he says. It always means worse, for some.

I read this in preparation for The Testaments (which I got my hands on yesterday), and I'm so glad I did. It is a beautiful adaptation with stunning artwork, but I somehow found the last section a bit rushed and scattered, and would have liked it to be just a bit longer.

I first read this copy while staffing the campus weight room in undergrad. I wasn't going to re-read it now because I like to be contrary, but when I got a free copy of The Testaments, I figured it was only right to dust off the original.

Related: Did anyone else watch the 1990 movie version with Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway, and Elizabeth McGovern? I watched it several times back in the day, but no one I talk to lately has heard about it.

Lovesbooks87 I didn't know that there was a movie. I have been watching the show and it scares the crap out of me at times. Can't wait to start The Testaments this weekend! 4d
Kimberlone From my memory the 90s version was not very good 4d

IndoorDame I vaguely remember the movie version, but I didn‘t love that adaptation 4d
ImperfectCJ @Heatherfeather That would definitely have been awkward... 4d
ImperfectCJ @IndoorDame Definitely not a great adaptation, but I enjoyed it when I was a teenager. 4d
ImperfectCJ @Kimberlone I don't remember it being very good, but I did enjoy it. Of course, I was, like, 15, and hadn't developed a very discerning movie palate. 4d
ImperfectCJ @LauraJ Ah, VHS! Those were the days. 4d
ImperfectCJ @Lovesbooks87 I haven't seen the show yet. I've heard good things, but I've become more leery of adaptations as I've aged. Plus I'm too cheap to pay for Hulu. 😆 4d

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The gauge for which speculative fiction should be measured. I grabbed this on Audible (for a #reread), narrated by Claire Danes, months ago and decided to listen before starting The Testaments. Atwood is just so damned good. This story is so searing and complex. I really need to *finally* read some of her other work, but first ... part two.

MrBook Nice review! I‘ve read some of her other work, and it‘s recommended. 😁 6d
britt_brooke @MrBook Thanks! Do you have a favorite of hers? 6d
MrBook I really liked “Stone Mattress”. “The Heart Goes Last” wound up being hilarious. (edited) 6d

KathyWheeler Clair Danes does a great job of narrating this book. 6d
Lcsmcat I‘ve not read anything of hers that I _didn‘t_ like! But Blind Assassin is a favorite. 6d
Prairiegirl_reading Oryx and crake is also really good. It‘s the first in a trilogy and I think it‘s the strongest of the three. 6d
britt_brooke @Lcsmcat Definitely stacking that one - thanks! 6d
britt_brooke @Prairiegirl_reading Thanks, and that‘s good to know. Stacking! 6d
TorieStorieS That‘s good to hear- I also grabbed this on audio for a re-read but I was a little nervous that Danes would be distracting! 6d
britt_brooke @TorieStorieS I had a hard time separating her face from Offred at first, tbh. Then I got used to it. 6d
Scochrane26 Her other books—personally, I love Alias Grace (read 3 times) and The blind assassin (read 2). Lady Oracle is fun. I haven‘t re-read Cat‘s eye and The Robber bride but remember not liking them as much. I finally read Oryx and Crake this yr, & it‘s excellent. 6d

Putting a pin in the other book I‘m reading for now. The release of the sequel to “The Handmaid‘s Tale” snuck up on me. I wanted to do a re-read (I never re-read books but I read this when I was 14. I need a refresher) before I start “The Testaments.” About to get my Gilead on.

Side Note: this book had quite the reading and feminist impact on me. It made dystopian novels my favorite and it made me wanna fight like hell to not end up in a Gilead.

I read this for the first and only time in the fall of 1994; I bought it at the school book fair and read it that night while my hostess on a college overnight worked on a paper. It scared the crap out of me, 17 and still relatively sheltered even though I was a reader and thus “knew” things from books. Reading it today for the first time as an adult, almost 25 years after that first reading.

JacqMac My 17 year old just borrowed it from me for her English class. I‘m excited to hear what she thinks. 6d

For two weeks in August I watched three seasons of The Handmaid‘s Tale. That created a personal requirement to read and appreciate this unbelievable book prior to my bookmail arriving with its sequel. I would like to think I had the sophistication to appreciate THT in 1986, but alas, I was in Richard Chamberlain Thorn Birds lust. ...And with no way of imagining a certain real estate billionaire then could make this book so believable now.

mcctrish I read THT around the time it came out and recently a new graphic novel version of it while I have been binge watching the show ( halfway through season 3, I won‘t push it before I see MA speak on the 10th) and while it haunted me back then enough that I can still feel that first reading 20 years later, now it feels so much more ‘real‘ thx to extremist religious people north and south of the 49th parallel 1w
AmyN.Clegg I was so lucky to have been assigned to read this story in my high school AP lit class. Since then, I have re-read this book every year. Its amazing. When the show first premiered, I was worried that there was no way they could do it justice. But it did. I also loved seeing Margret Atwood's cameos in the show ^^
1w
marleed @AmyN.Clegg @mcctrish I envy you your early reading! As I read, I just kept wondering what the experience would have been. I was so caught up the all too real dystopia having experienced all 3 seasons back-to-back that my head can‘t separate the excellent book from the excellent show. I‘m so glad MA agrees with the show. Oh to the book I said aloud JUNE, your name is June! 1w
See All 8 Comments
AmyN.Clegg I read a great interview about the name June. MA said she never gave the character a name. She did the intentionally but the readers named her and she didn‘t expect that. And then so many readers refereed to her as June that, in MAs mind that became her name. :o 1w
marleed @AmyN.Clegg I think it‘s so cool that MA was fine with her audience determining June as her name. In my paperback version she provides some 2017 thoughts to her book so it made me really notice June not saying her name. ...Once again, not sure I would have noticed otherwise! 1w
Scochrane26 I read THT around 2000 while in grad school & have read it over at least twice since then. It scared me back then but scared me more a couple of yrs ago. 1w
Scochrane26 Haven‘t watched the show still. 1w
marleed @Scochrane26 It breaks my heart how scary and possible this world is today. I think the show is a great tribute to the book. 5d

I read this many years ago ,and especially since I watched the show on Hulu ( I am a few episodes shy of being done) and it expands beyond the novel ,I felt I should read it again before the sequel comes out to set the context.I was stunned by it in the 80s, the social climate was already getting more conservative but the novel still felt dystopian, upon my re-read , it feels like it could be more like tomorrow.😳What a great writer she is !

keepingupwiththepenguins I'm just about to pick up my copy of The Testaments - so excited!! 1w
BookieBiker I read this in 1993 as a 17 yr old and it truly changed the course of my life. I haven‘t reread it nor have I seen the Hulu series (bc I wanted to reread first!). Going to have to get this done before The Testaments. A must-read! 1w
Leftcoastzen @BookieBiker wow, interesting.Atwood always writes well but I think many young and not so young women “ feel” this novel.Ofred puts us in a position to see the quiet horror of the situation & insights on how quickly a better time in the past can be snatched away from us. 1w

Atwood's speculative dystopia, first published in 1985, seems vastly more prescient than it seemed back then, with its vision of a world (or at least an America) where the hard-won victories of liberalism and feminism have been reversed. The prose is luminous and the narrative technique, involving flashbacks to the times before and just after the new order has been imposed, masterly.

SexyCajun I read this book and it's sincerely scary that this could even come close to happening 1w

I remember reading this when it first came out and enjoying it simply as a science fiction story but just as one possible future. Now, I think the current regimes in the UK and the US are run by idiots more intent on simply feathering their own nests but they would have no qualms about such a future if they thought they could make money out of it.

Karisa I agree. Just reread it too (going to read sequel next). Handmaid's Tale rings truer than ever making it all the more frightening. 3w

The fact that this book is from 1985 and yet feels so modern and to date amazes me.
