Cat's Eye
Cat's Eye | Margaret Atwood
Cat’s Eye is the story of Elaine Risley, a controversial painter who returns to Toronto, the city of her youth, for a retrospective of her art. Engulfed by vivid images of the past, she reminisces about a trio of girls who initiated her into the fierce politics of childhood and its secret world of friendship, longing, and betrayal. Elaine must come to terms with her own identity as a daughter, a lover, an artist, and a woman—but above all she must seek release from her haunting memories. Disturbing, hilarious, and compassionate, Cat’s Eye is a breathtaking novel of a woman grappling with the tangled knot of her life. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I have two copies of Cat's Eye, a hardcover and a paperback. It's a mass market paperback, the first printing in that format, so it's got some mileage on it. My copy is pretty janky: small type, the cover hanging on for dear life, the pages yellowed. I picked it up in a used bookstore some years back. I was about to put it in a stack to give away, no room for duplicates in an already overcrowded bookshelf... But I just realized it's signed! 😯

Aimeesue I help sort books for a church book sale and I almost always check inside older books that look slightly out of place; a lot of times people have kept them because they're signed. Found a copy of Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, illustrated and signed by Edward Gorey. (edited) 1mo

Some books demand to be savoured, and this was one such book. It's very well done. It's about how one person can fuck up your entire existence, at least that's my interpretation. At the end, she seems to be able to let go.
This is my first book of the year. How's your weekend so far?

462 pages, normally paced. #MargaretAtwood

The second Atwood novel I read after The Handmaid‘s Tale blew me away. At times difficult to read because Atwood really gets how children can be cruel. This is the story of an unequal friendship and the toll childhood can take on one‘s later life. The cover made me think of today‘s prompt #walkingintheair
#WinterWonderland

batsy I love this book so much, but it's true—I found it a difficult read, as well, for how it depicts that cruelty. 5mo
CoffeeNBooks I thought this was a really good book- different from some of her other books I've read, but really good! 5mo

I‘m in a pretty shitty emotional state right now because I just got fired (for the first time ever in my life and I‘m almost 38) two days ago so ... I have no real thoughts to put together coherently about this book. The writing is sharp, as Atwood always is, and I like the examination of toxic female friendships. But it was hard for me to get into something that just made me more depressed than I already am 😞 3/5 ⭐️

There are days when I can hardly make it out of bed. I find it an effort to speak. I measure progress in steps, the next one and the next one, as far as the bathroom. The steps are major accomplishments. I focus on taking the cap off the toothpaste, getting the brush up to my mouth. I have difficulty lifting my arm to do even that. I feel I am without worth, that nothing I can do is of any value, least of all to myself.

#bestiebookclub @Bessiecat

Just finished my Book club book for Feb, I'm a little behind. My Bestie chose this book a) because we love Atwood, and b) because she heard it's like Mean Girls but for adults. It is similar to Mean Girls but only in regards to the bullying.

It's about a woman who returns to her home town, and who has to come to terms with events of her childhood.

I liked it. Not necessarily profound, for me. But relatable.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Long, slow, reflective, Cat's Eye doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

Yet somehow I adored it. This is the kind of book you can sink into and inhabit. It beautifully captures the nebulous recollections of a life. Tiny details can have massive significance, then fade away, forgotten, only to re-emerge later as half-remembered distortions. Books rarely depict this waxing and waning of memories in such a true way.
