Jane and Prudence
Jane and Prudence: A Novel | Barbara Pym
58 posts | 34 read | 56 to read
Barbara Pym affectionately skewers the charms, eccentricities, and secret yearnings of British middle-class life Jane Cleveland and Prudence Bates were close friends at Oxford University, but now live very different lives. Forty-one-year-old Jane lives in the country, is married to a vicar, has a daughter she adores, and lives a very proper life in a very proper English parish. Prudence, a year shy of thirty, lives in London, has an office job, and is self-sufficient and fiercely independentuntil Jane decides her friend should be married. Jane has the perfect husband in mind for her former pupil: a widower named Fabian Driver. But there are other women vying for Fabians attention. And Pru is nursing her own highly inappropriate desire for her older, married, and seemingly oblivious employer, Dr. Grampian. What follows is a witty, delightful, trenchant story of manners, morals, family, and female bonding that redefines the social novel for a new generation.

I just loved the snarkiness in this novel about two women who‘s been friends since Prudence was taught by Jane. Jane is married to a priest, and they have just moved into a new parish and Jane is the least likely vicar‘s wife there is.

Naturally a book about Jane and Prudence. Jane is a 40 something vicar‘s wife who doesn‘t behave as your stereotypical vicar‘s wife and tend to say the wrong thing. Prudence is in her late 20s and enjoying her love affairs. Two friends with not much in common.

I just love Pym‘s snarkiness and wit and her writing that‘s just to the point.

AnneCecilie #1953 #192025 @Librarybelle I don‘t believe in feeling guilty about my reads or music, but still I chose this for #GuiltyPleasure for its comfiness and I was in the mood for some Pym. As for my song I was thinking of some Taylor Swift, Glitch is fitting for some of the things that happen in the book, but Paris is my favorite city. @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen (edited) 10mo

‘Poor Constance was left alone a great deal,‘ said Miss Doggett. ‘In many ways, of course, Mr Driver is a very charming man. They say, though, that men only want one thing - that‘s the truth of the matter.‘ Miss Doggett again looked puzzled; it was as if she had heard that men only wanted one thing, but had forgotten for the moment what it was.

‘I wonder if we might have one bar of the fire on?‘ asked Miss Clothier at last.
‘Oh, it isn‘t cold,‘ said Miss Trapnell. ‘Do you find it cold, Miss Bates?‘
Prudence disliked being called ‘Miss Bates‘; if she resembled any character in fiction, it was certainly not poor silly Miss Bates.

Bklover Poor Prudence! 10mo

This book made me laugh out loud as I finished reading it on my train journey to Bath. I don‘t think it is as fine a book as Excellent Women but its eminently quotable shrewd observations on male/female relationships and Jane‘s perplexity at every day conventions were very rewarding and entertaining!

BarbaraBB You‘re in Bath? It‘s on my bucketlist, especially now that Persephone Books moved there 🤍 2y

Oh but it was splendid the things women were doing for men all the time, thought Jane. Making them feel, perhaps sometimes by no more than a casual glance, that they were loved and admired and desired when they weee worthy of none of those things- enabling them to preen themselves and puff out their plumage like birds and bask in the sunshine of love, real or imagined, it didn‘t matter which.

Vansa What an excellent paragraph. I find a lot of writers now don't have this talent for insightful sharp writing. Maybe Louise Knealon, a bit, in Snowflake 2y

The passion of those early days, the fragments of Donne and Marvell and Jane‘s obscure seventeenth century poets, the objects of her abortive research, all these faded away into mild kindly looks and spectacles. There came a day when one didn‘t quote poetry to one‘s husband anymore. When had that day been? Could she have noted it and mourned it if she had been more observant?

I love how Pym's characters let others live their lives and make their own choices, despite sometimes having strong opinions about those choices. She also beautifully captures what it's like to be basically happy while still having doubts and wondering if life could be better.

Seriously goodreads? 😂😂😂 Their recommendation algorithm is completely whack!

LeahBergen 😆😆 4y

LeahBergen Good one! 🤣🤣 4y
rwmg The book has a scene which wasn't in the film where Bond helps the title character hang her summer curtains. 4y
Ruthiella @rwmg 😂😂😂 That‘s probably it! 4y
Ruthiella @Lcsmcat I ignore them too except those that suggest I read American Psycho because I liked Charlotte‘s Web or similar! 😅 (I figure there Templeton the Rat would be the connection!) (edited) 4y
CarolynM Wow, that is weird? The Spy Who Loved Me is an oddity among the Bond books because it is told by the "Bond Girl" in the first person. The film has a totally different story. I still can't imagine why it would be linked to Jane and Prudence, though. 4y
CarolynM Oops, just noticed this is the book of the film. Weirder still. 4y
Ruthiella @CarolynM I read The Spy Who Loved Me ... Bond is barely in it! 😅. I went through a real All Things Bond phase in my 20s - books, movies, theme songs! The link to Pym is bewildering for any Bond novel or novelization...An octopus 🐙 could make a better random recommendation! 😂 4y

#ThoughtfulThursday

🎒 This time of year- flip flops!
🏜I‘ve driven through the Mojave desert a few times on the way to Las Vegas.
📚 I‘m taking a break from the behemoth The Magic Mountain to read the tagged book by the delightful Barbara Pym.

Thanks for the tag @Klou !😍

Mentioning Barbara Pym makes me think of you @LeahBergen . Would you like to play?😀

LeahBergen Oh, I love Jane and Prudence! ❤️ 4y
LeahBergen And I‘ll answer this tag here as I‘ve missed Thursday. 😆 1. Shoes and handbags are my thing! 2. Hmm... several in the southern US and parts of Egypt? And probably some others I can‘t think of? 🤔 3. I‘m reading some great stuff this week: The Persephone Book of Short Stories and The Provincial Lady in London. Thanks for the tag! 😘😘 4y
Ruthiella @LeahBergen Thanks for answering! I‘m on the west cost of the US so by the time I get around to anything it‘s already tomorrow everywhere else. I‘ve only read the first Provincial Lady book, which I enjoyed. I wonder if Helen Fielding was inspired by it? (edited) 4y

So, I‘ve made my own bingo card to work through some of the authors (or publishers) on my TBR shelves. I don‘t like to plan specific reads too far in advance so these categories should give me ample choice.

britt_brooke Love it!! I might need to steal this idea. 4y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen @Libby1 The Dean Street Press books are great! I've read Alice and a few others. 4y
Suet624 @vivastory For over 2 decades I‘ve typed a list of books read, a brief description, and any quotes I liked. Two years ago I started using Goodreads instead and I‘m sorry I did that. So 2020 finds me doing both. I read great books over the last few years but never took the time to memorialize the quotes or passages that were important to me. 4y
Suet624 @leahbergen it‘s fabulous that you found a way to ensure that you would read books from your own shelves. 4y
vivastory @Suet624 Did you save it on a flash drive? Or were you using an online book journal? 4y
Suet624 @vivastory totally old school. I actually originally started handwriting everything into composition books. Then when I got a home computer I typed it into a word doc. Then, just to be really geeky, along the way I started printing them out and pasting each page into a composition book. I don‘t really like reading on a screen so I prefer to paste it into a journal. Sounds labor intensive, but I love doing it. 4y
vivastory @Suet624 I love that idea! I might have to use that. I like the idea of journaling, but realistically I know that I don't have the patience to sit down & write out my thoughts by hand. I've thought about doing a blog, but I'm not sure how different it would be for me than my activity on Litsy. But my inner analog really likes the idea of a physical object. 4y
Suet624 @vivastory Exactly! I don't have the patience to handwrite anything and I'm a fast typist. I'm too shy to do a blog. All I really want is something that I can look back on, something that is in my hands, that I can say, “Wow! That's a great quote - what a great insight!“ Or “Oh! I forgot I read that book!“ I find myself burrowing into the composition books often. 4y
TrishB That‘s a fantastic reward system! 4y
rubyslippersreads This looks like exactly the bingo card I‘d make for myself. May I steal it? 😂 4y
LeahBergen @vivastory I‘ve had paper book journals since the ‘90s and can‘t live without that little physical record to flip back through (like @Suet624 !) I like to say things like, “hmm... what was I reading on this day 12 years ago?” 😆 4y
LeahBergen @vivastory @Cinfhen I‘ll take another shot of him with a book (if he ever sits down again). 😆 4y
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB It had to be done. 😉 4y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I hope you find some that you like! 😘 4y
LeahBergen @veritysalter It was the first Brookner I read MANY years ago. I really need to revisit it! 4y

This was a lovely read, and just what I felt like. A slice of gentle village life, complete with tea and cakes, but with a large helping of poking fun at stereotypes of male and female roles.
Jane is a vicar‘s wife newly moved to the village, she‘s creative and eccentric and never quite seems to fit her role. She enjoys playing match maker for her younger more glamorous friend Prudence. A knowing wink to ‘Emma‘ along the way. ⬇️

Not your typical book heroine, but 40-something Jane Cleveland might be my favorite character from this past year's reading. She's bright, observant, kind, absentminded, snoopy, meddlesome, and slightly-too-honest. And she's a terrible homemaker to boot. (Poor Jane, so unsuited to being a vicar's wife!) I found her an absolute delight! More Pym for me in 2019!

My mother adored Barbara Pym.Decided to see the allure. Did not expect a comedy, with well drawn, contrasting, characters: Jane,41,the scattered, poetry spouting ministers wife, who measured her success( or rather lack thereof) by ministers wives in novels, & Prudence,at 29, younger, urbane, single working woman, London dweller, with multiple love affairs. An unlikely, yet enduring, mutually valuable friendship.Such an enjoyable, read! 😂

Matchmaking gone awry, this put me in the mind of Austen's Emma. A comedy of manners though not quite so highborn. Jane's determined to marry off her young friend Prudence. Full of your cozy English countryside characters, this was a quiet read with much ado about nothing, other than Jane's capacity to get all the romances wrong.

quote
saresmoore

“So the table held only the roses, a book of poems...and a novel of the kind that Prudence enjoyed, well written and tortuous, with a good dash of culture and the inevitable unhappy or indifferent ending, which was so like life.”

‘Who has she married?‘ asked Miss Morrow.
‘An anthropophagist,‘ declared Miss Doggett in an authoritative tone. ‘He does some kind of scientific work, I believe.‘
‘I thought it meant a cannibal – one who ate human flesh,‘ said Jane in wonder.
‘Well, science has made such strides,‘ said Miss Doggett doubtfully. ‘His name is Mr Bone.‘
‘That certainly does seem to be a connection,‘ said Jane, laughing...

ValerieAndBooks Wow those covers are a lot different from the ones I've been picking up (with the old-fashioned wallpaper look to them), but Pym is Pym 😊! 7y

christineandbooks These covers and Book Depository are exactly what got me to finally read a Pym (Jane and Prudence). Can't wait to get more of them! They are so pretty! 7y

Loved discovering this new-to-me author and her charming books. It was a short, sweet book reminiscent of Jane Austen but set in 1950's England. Similar sort of gentle wit and subtle commentary about social conventions and relationships. Chuckle-out-loud funny at times. I'm definitely going to look for more by Barbara Pym. Also I just really love how it looks with my three Austen Word Cloud Classics...

While I didn't love this as much as Pym's first two novels, it was still a delight. Here again Pym softly skewers mid-20th-century British notions of gender, class, religion, sex, and whatnot. Jane—perfectly summed up in the blurb as "an incompetent vicar's wife, who always looks like she's about to feed the chickens" was richly drawn; her younger, sexually-liberated friend Prudence did not come as alive on the page, I didn't think.

saresmoore I know I shouldn't judge the author by her photo, but it seems unsurprising that she would write the chicken-feeding vicar's wife more empathetically than the sexually liberated friend. 🙃 7y
shawnmooney @saresmoore Ha - Who was it who said "If you can't say anything nice… Come sit by me!"? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @shawnmooney @saresmoore It was Alice Roosevelt Longworth (daughter of Theodore) who said that 😂. I'm sure you've still been wondering this four months later. Scrolling through this book's profile tonight, just after @LeahBergen tagged it as part of a Pym book haul 😊. 7y

A wonderful Pym specimen with lots of period detail of austerity Britain. Love, in Pym books, is always understood according to the conventions of fiction but experienced in much more humble ways; and the resolution isn't about engagements so much as a fuller appreciation of one's own life in the moment. Plus: it's funny.

Bought this little beauty on a whim from Book Depository. I've seen the author mentioned on a couple of Bookstagram accounts I follow and decided to try one out. So far a fun read... described as kind of a more contemporary (early 1950's) Jane Austen. Adore the cover...
