I‘ve enjoyed reading this. I picked out a few favorite stories as I usually do. My favorites from this collection are ‘The Naval Treaty‘, ‘The Yellow Face ‘ and ‘The Greek interpreter.‘

Going WAY back on the tbr for today's new read 📚

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I love the sherlock holmes mysteries. Enjoy! ❤️ 1y
BookishMadHatter @BookHoarder32 I've read several already and loved them and then put them aside ... no good reason, just distracted by the hundreds of other books on my list I suppose lol 1y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Lol so true. Have you seen any of the tv adaptations? The bbc/pbs ones with Jeremy Brett are my favorite originals. And then there‘s Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch. (edited) 1y
BookishMadHatter @BookHoarder32 I have seen some and so far none that I have seen have been disappointments. 1y

Another excellent installment in the works of Doyle's Holmes and Watson.

We are finally introduced to Mycroft and Moriarty in this collection, and I was quite excited to see them making an appearance at last.

BooknerdsLife I love Sherlock Holmes but didn't know Stephen Fry did audio for it!!!! 😱 I need to find them! 3y
Shaneyney I love Sherlock Holmes and I love Stephen Fry! What a great combination 3y

So, my biggest reading goal of this year is to read through the books on my bookcase. I'm trying to do this at random and have two ways I'm thinking of doing this: I have a spreadsheet of all of them, random # draw to choose OR the way I ended up with this book.. a d4 to pick the shelf and a d20 to pick the book. DNFing will be heavily encouraged for this adventure.
I've never actually read any Holmes.. we'll see how this goes!

readordierachel What a good idea! 3y
Crazeedi You could even join in with #bookspin and #Doublespin and #BookSpinBingo with @TheAromaofBooks . It's a fun way to clear your shelves! 3y
TheAromaofBooks You're always welcome to join #BookSpin (thanks for the shout-out @Crazeedi !!) although I'm a pretty big fan of a random number generator myself 😂 Good luck!!! 3y
See All 12 Comments
night_shift @readordierachel thanks!! @Crazeedi thanks for the idea, I'll have to check it out.. @TheAromaofBooks I have a tough time keeping up with any sorta challenges, but this looks fun! 3y
Crazeedi @UnidragonFrag welcome! Just another idea for you, and yes I have a hard time with challenges too, this one is pretty simple 3y
TheAromaofBooks You may have already found it, but I did create a master post about the challenge that can be found here - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 Just let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to be added to the tag list for February!! It's basically a challenge where you can choose to read just one book from your list or all of them, however works best for you!! 3y
night_shift @Crazeedi yes! I think reading two books should be feasible for me lol .. but the bingo board looks fun too.. I don't think I've ever read that many in one month 😅 @TheAromaofBooks I found it, but thanks for the link! Yes, could you add me to the list in case I forget haha 📚 3y
TheAromaofBooks Will do!! And everyone reads different amounts & in different ways... I even have a few hefty nonfiction books this month that I've spread across multiple squares on my bingo board because I know it will take me a lot more time to get through those. So make the challenge work for you!! 3y
night_shift @TheAromaofBooks oh! Can use one book for multiple prompts? That's cool! Some challenges are like nah to that. But I like that! 3y
TheAromaofBooks So basically the “official“ challenge is to read the BookSpin and/or DoubleSpin books each month - the two numbers that I draw first. Reading those books qualify you for entries for the end-of-the-year giveaway. The bingo part is for those looking for more of a challenge & the only prize is glory & self-satisfaction, so I'm pretty flexible about how people want to achieve that 😂 Here's my January card (partially complete) ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks & you can see that I have The Pioneers and The Newark Earthworks each taking up multiple squares - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2124800 - they're both rather dry nonfiction & giving them more than one square makes me feel like I'm actually getting somewhere when I read them!! 3y
night_shift @TheAromaofBooks oh, ok - cool! That definately makes sense. I should do that with the nonfiction I'm reading now as I've been whittling away at it for months and it should not be taking me this long lol - oh! Could do the same thing with a short story collection, each block like 2-3 stories.. hm.. 3y

Awe.. I love Sherlock! I just love love love Sherlock I am so glad we have chosen this for our #NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC) books this month. I have been missing out! I am hoping to finish one more by the end of this month :) Also have been watching a ton of Elementary (when the service is decent enough for streaming)

Okay so I love them both but I have to keep with Sherlock. I love the way his mind works.. I mean I love Watson's level-headedness I feel like Sherlock needs him or he would spiral. But yeah... I have to stick with Sherlock as a fav (if we have to have favs)

I have a hunch but ... I think I am wrong ... I will post it in the comments in libby as a spoiler (but I am pretty confident I am wrong)

#NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC)

So I am gonna start this one today/or tomorrow! I am really loving these Sherlock Holmes. I am so thankful that #NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC) decided to pick this as their May books (it was something I had been wanting to read and was on my TBR -- after having watched the BBC Sherlock show, but just had never gotten to them til now)

Butterfinger I am really enjoying them. 4y
ElizaMarie @Butterfinger Me too! If it weren't for this group I would probably have them still on my TBR! 4y

Just completed The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes 1893. I felt that after reading the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes that this particular 11 case series would be more of the same deductions and “obvious” reasoning from our friend Sherlock. I admit the stories can be cumbersome at times but this was slightly better than the Adventure series. My favorite remains A Study in Scarlet which was Doyle‘s original Sherlock story.

As I've been listening to the #audible production of the Sherlock Holmes catalogue narrated by Stephen Fry, I've mostly been underwhelmed. This one was different. I enjoyed the stories in this collection and am looking forward to more. My fave in this one was "The Final Problem." I'll take this to check off the #unitedkingdom for #ReadingEurope2020.

Oh @DaveGreen7777 — how do I pick just one favorite villain?!? Here a just 4 of my faves. We can‘t have epic heroes with an equally epic adversary.

I would love to teach a course on the other side of the story. Assigned reading would be things like Wizard of Oz versus Wicked—who‘s the real “villain”? Because each one of the so-called villains has their own story. And one is never a villain in one‘s own story.

#TheWorldNeedsAVillain

Macker11 I love that Ms. Trunchbull is an option. 5y
DaveGreen7777 I love this post, Lynn! And I think that‘s a wonderful idea to compare stories from the villain‘s point of view. It would be interesting, since most villains actually see themselves as the hero (although probably not Jim Moriarty, I think he takes great pride in being a true villain)! Thanks for participating in the giveaway! 😊 5y
wanderinglynn @Macker11 She‘s an awesome “villain”! 5y
See All 18 Comments
wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 In the most recent adaptation (with the awesome Andrew Scott as Moriarty), he claims to be more bored than anything. And it seems it‘s more ego that true villain—just trying to prove he‘s the smartest kid on the block. 5y
wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 Also, I‘d love to bring out their backstories to know what happened that changed their path. Wicked and the newerish Maleficent movie have both sought to bring the backstories to light. 5y
wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 I also didn‘t even start talking about all the comic villains I love, like Magneto. Talk about an awesome backstory that justifies his current actions. 5y
DaveGreen7777 @wanderinglynn I so agree with you about Andrew Scott‘s portrayal, he‘s mesmerizing as Jim Moriarty! 😀 Interestingly enough, his Moriarty even acknowledged he was a villain, when he told Sherlock, “Every fairy tale needs a good old-fashioned villain”. 😈 5y
DaveGreen7777 @wanderinglynn Also, Magneto is one of my favorite comic book villains because of his compelling backstory and motivation. Other villains may be in it for the power or the money, but Magneto really thinks he‘s a necessary evil, “Get the humans before they get us!” 😱 5y
wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 That‘s right—he did say that. But do you really think he sees himself that way? Or was Moriarty playing on Sherlock‘s view of Sherlock as the hero? 5y
wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 Magneto! 🙌🏻 5y
DaveGreen7777 @wanderinglynn Hmmm... that‘s an excellent question about what Moriarty may have really meant! 🤔 Come to think of it, he may even have been referring to what he was about to do to Sherlock, turn public opinion against Sherlock by painting him out to be a fraud and the true villain! 😱 5y
wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 See?!? Wouldn‘t this make an awesome college course? It would require critical thinking and seeing the other side of the coin. 😉 5y
Michollio LOVE Andrew Scott as Moriarty. He has one of my favorite lines 5y
wanderinglynn @Michollio He‘s fabulous. I mean the whole cast is great, but he really makes it. What‘s the line? 5y
Michollio "And honey you should see me in a crown." 5y
AbigailDays Backgrounds to all the famous villains would make awesome reading! Is there anything like a list of book pairs, like the Wizard of Oz and Wicked? 5y
wanderinglynn @Michollio That is a most excellent line! 👍🏻 5y
wanderinglynn @AbigailDays I don‘t know. That would be a good list to make if there isn‘t one. 👍🏻 5y

Both "Adventures" and "Memoirs" are short story collections featuring the timeless tales of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. In "Adventures," we get a glimpse of "that woman," Irene Adler in the very first short, "A Scandal in Bohemia." ?

But "Memoirs" promises Professor Moriarty!

Thanks to Steve Donoghue on Booktube, I picked up my first Sherlock Holmes story at the end of last year. And ever since then I have kept coming back to these fun stories.
Thanks to #WhoDunItAThon I slotted The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes into my January TBR and have loved reading through the 11 cases.
I wasn‘t prepared for the ending of The Final Problem...but that didn‘t spoil my experience at all.

Sherlock Holmes certainly knew his enemy and they finally came to meet at the Reichenbach Falls. The short story of this infamous meeting can be found entitled The Final Problem in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. On an aside I loved the portrayal of Moriarty by Andrew Scott, he just oozed menace and evil! #rocktober #knowyourenemy
