John Muir, in a letter to his wife during his first visit to Rainier:
"Did not mean to climb it, but got excited, and soon was on top. "
The picture is Rainier seen from halfway up Tolmie Lookout. John was clearly much more fit than I!

1) Lost City of the Monkey God was scientific and exciting. That's a winning combo in my book!
2) Sissy. Because my sibling couldn't pronounce my real name.
3) Ohh, tough choice! Mozzarella sticks are amazing, but it's hard to beat crispy onion rings.
4) More hiking! I've spent the week touring national parks and I'm not done yet!
5) Just two. ☹ "Es ist Freitag" and "it's Friday!"

Sourcery | Terry Pratchett

Mehso-so

Finished up Sourcery on the way back from Olympic today, and even my good mood from all the mountains and hiking couldn't make me enjoy it. The book started out beautifully, lots of humor, an interesting antagonist, but the middle went downhill. Two- dimensional supporting characters, predictable plot, and one of those "forget it ever happened" endings. Ugh! I gave it a so-so because the first half really was funny.

Need some light reading for the car rides in between hikes. This is Mt Rainier, seen from Tolmie Peak. I've never been to the northwest before, it's so lush and green!

Pickpick

So, I originally picked this up to be polite as a new friend had strongly recommended it.Good grief, I had no idea adventures like this could happen in the real world! Douglas Preston was part of an expedition to search for a fabled "lost city" in Honduras back in 2015. Preston's story is chock full of huge snakes, infectious diseases, and well- researched history in a part of the world which I know little about.
#realadventure #travel #truestory

AbigailDays Fair warning, it is not for the faint of heart. There are blunt discussions of tropical diseases, poisonous snake bites, and other slightly gruesome topics 1mo

2) Mission Impossible: Fallout. Er, I don't watch movies much?
3) Watermelon, for sure!
4) Oh goodness. 20-odd first cousins, the last time I checked.

The lovely @nerdcornerbooks recommended this one, and I'm glad she did. The Rosie Project is a pick for me, but a mild one. The plot was nothing spectacular, the writing fairly good, but the story unfolding through an autistic person's eyes was very different. I've worked with several people who thought like Don, so seeing it in narrative format really clarified how they thought.

From The Rosie Project. A fun read which is turning out to be surprisingly informative. The narrator appears to be on the autism spectrum, and his insights and reactions to social situations are quite interesting.
Thanks for the recommendation, @nerdcornerbooks !

No storms this weekend, so I made it to my reading spot. Got through the first chapter of Night Circus before the sun became too much.

Lady_Tigana_20 How long does it take to get to this spot? 1mo
AbigailDays Depends on how fast a hiker you are! 😁 It took me around an hour, which was about as far as I wanted to go in this heat. 1mo

Going Postal | Terry Pratchett

1) Going Postal is my favorite Terry Pratchett book! (So far) I've read it at least 4 times.
2) Puffy, hands down. Crunchy always feel stale to me.
3) Er, both? I'm a morning bird, so I often see both anyway.
4) I'd go on a massive Thriftbooks shopping spree!
5) 1st grade, because that's when reading became fun!

Bailedbailed

I picked this up for an #ownvoices read as part of a #habitica reading challenge. The description sounded right up my alley- recipes, history, and a touch of the fairy tale. The reality was a good deal stranger. There were several bizarrely sexual scenes and mystical elements mixed in with references to Mexican history and step- by- step recipes.
The whole thing was very jarring.

I had planned to hike to a nice reading rock to enjoy the afternoon, but this sky was lurking over the first ridge. Barely made it back to the car before the hail started!
Credit where it is due, the storm was doing an excellent imitation of the 1812 Overture

2) Zion national park. I can't wait to go back there!
3) Cake trumps pie every time in my world.
4) YES. My Saturday plans include another hike with a book.
Bit late, but too much fun to pass up!

Yep, just as good as I remembered! The characters are believable and sympathetic, the plot is good, and the story well- told. Something I particularly appreciate is that the hero escapes each situation in a believable manner- the are no crazy coincidences where the hero prevails through a weird set of circumstances. I definitely recommend, and will likely reread it myself again!

Charityann I enjoyed this book and, the movie is pretty good too! 😊 1mo
AbigailDays @Charityann which version did you see? I remember liking a very old one several years ago but I haven't been able to find it again 1mo
Charityann @AbigailDays I saw the 1982 version, and possibly an older one as well, but the 1982 one is the one I really remember. 1mo

Took my book for a walk yesterday! Then promptly got lost in the story and ended up rather sunburnt. Still worth it!

Lynnsoprano Gorgeous! Do you mind if I ask where this is? 1mo
AbigailDays @Lynnsoprano it was about halfway up a mountain in the American southwest. I'd rather not be too specific, if you don't mind. 😁 Ther view was completely worth the hike to get there! 1mo
Karizma @AbigailDays I love your views! Reminds me of hiking in AZ when I lived there. 1mo

I picked this off my shelf for my next #habitica #modestreadingchallenge read. Absolutely loved this in high school, but don't think I've read it since. Which is a real shame considering a mutual love of this book is how I met my best friend!
I'm excited to see if the book is as good as I remember.

I had read this years ago and completely forgotten I even owned it. In a happy coincidence, it came up in a #habitica challenge right as the show premiered on Netflix. So I had to read it. I loved every minute of it! I had completely forgotten how funny Crowley and Aziraphale's interactions were!

AbigailDays @CoffeeNBooks thanks so much! I'm really enjoying seeing all the different books and commentary. This looks like a fun community! 2mo

Hi! I'm brand- new to Litsy and really looking forward to meeting more bookworms.
1) Chronicles of Narnia! I've loved them since I was little.
2) Definitely horseradish. Forced to eat it to be polite one too many times as a kid.
3) Wiggly things with more than 8 legs attached! 😱
4) One sister, and she's pretty cool
5) That's the goal here!
