DaveGreen7777 @vivastory Good question! One of my early favorites was Iago from Shakespeare‘s “Othello”, as he was an early version of a villain who corrupted others just because he could! I also like The Joker for the whole dynamic of his existing to bring chaos to Batman‘s attempts at order. And Lanfear from the Wheel of Time series was great since she was so powerful, and her motivations were twisted yet still managed to be sympathetic as well. 5y

I was gonna find some obscure villain or at least someone I haven‘t chosen before but honestly Snape is my OTL (one true love)
I fell in love with Snape when I watched the movies and then over again when I read the books. I know I did it wrong haha but without Snape we would be missing so much in the Wizarding World. He goes both ways (much like me ) is he villain or is he a hero? Chaotic Good?

DaveGreen7777 I love this picture, Rachel! 🖤🖤🖤 And I agree with you about Snape. Part of what makes him so fascinating to me is how he consistently teeters between hero and villain. Oh @DaveGreen7777 — how do I pick just one favorite villain?!? Here a just 4 of my faves. We can‘t have epic heroes with an equally epic adversary.

I would love to teach a course on the other side of the story. Assigned reading would be things like Wizard of Oz versus Wicked—who‘s the real “villain”? Because each one of the so-called villains has their own story. And one is never a villain in one‘s own story.

It would be interesting, since most villains actually see themselves as the hero (although probably not Jim Moriarty, I think he takes great pride in being a true villain)! wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 In the most recent adaptation (with the awesome Andrew Scott as Moriarty), he claims to be more bored than anything. And it seems it‘s more ego that true villain—just trying to prove he‘s the smartest kid on the block. 5y

wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 Also, I‘d love to bring out their backstories to know what happened that changed their path. Wicked and the newerish Maleficent movie have both sought to bring the backstories to light. 5y

wanderinglynn @DaveGreen7777 I also didn‘t even start talking about all the comic villains I love, like Magneto. Talk about an awesome backstory that justifies his current actions. 5y

DaveGreen7777 @wanderinglynn I so agree with you about Andrew Scott‘s portrayal, he‘s mesmerizing as Jim Moriarty! 😀 Interestingly enough, his Moriarty even acknowledged he was a villain, when he told Sherlock, “Every fairy tale needs a good old-fashioned villain”. 😈 5y

DaveGreen7777 @wanderinglynn Also, Magneto is one of my favorite comic book villains because of his compelling backstory and motivation. Other villains may be in it for the power or the money, but Magneto really thinks he‘s a necessary evil, “Get the humans before they get us!” 😱 5y

One of my favourite villians is Cersei from GoT. I love strong female characters ♀️✊🏼. She's a badass yet absolutely vile. You admire her, but you hate her guts and want her to die an agonizing death. It's complicated.

5feet.of.fury I remember an English teacher explaining that (we had an exercise to write the antagonist‘s side of the story). No one thinks they‘re the bad guy, even Hitler didn‘t think he was the bad guy. Multiple perspectives in novels definitely highlight that, you may not agree with the motivations or outcomes, but you can understand why they are acting the way they are. 5y

There's just something about her that I can't help cheering for! And while, ultimately, Daenarys Targaryen is my favorite GoT character, I can't help secretly raising a glass of wine to salute my evil queen! 🦁💕

My second entry in this giveaway post! 😁 My other favorite literary villian is...Mara Jade from the Star Wars expanded universe. Despite turning to the path of good and eventually marrying Luke, Mara Jade STARTS her character journey by being the Emperor's right hand gal and carries out all his dirty work. I have always loved how strong and badass she is, even when she was a villian! 💕

My favorite literary villain is...Lanfear from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Why? A couple reasons! First of all, she's batshit crazy! All the things she does are laced with that unique craziness of hers. 😈 And also, I feel like she's a bit sympathetic of a character. You know everything she does originates back to one point-her love for the dragon reborn. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity Dave! 💕

To celebrate reaching 5,000 Litfluence, I am doing a giveaway for a paperback version of one of my favorite books of all time. “Villains By Necessity” has been out of print for a long time, so it can be very hard to find a physical copy. The rules for the giveaway are in the comments below.
