The Glass Castle: A Memoir
The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whoseideals and stubborn nonconformity were both theircurse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Wallshad four children. In the beginning, they lived likenomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured hischildren's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace lifefearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote andcouldn't stand the responsibility of providing for herfamily, called herself an "excitement addict."Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteenminutes had no appeal when she could make apainting that might last forever.Later, when the money ran out, or the romance ofthe wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to thedismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family-- Rex Walls had done everything he could toescape. He drank. He stole the grocery money anddisappeared for days. As the dysfunction of thefamily escalated, Jeannette and her brother andsisters had to fend for themselves, supporting oneanother as they weathered their parents' betrayalsand, finally, found the resources and will to leavehome. What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls isnot just that she had the guts and tenacity andintelligence to get out, but that she describes herparents with such deep affection and generosity.Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but alsoa tender, moving tale of unconditional love in afamily that despite its profound flaws gave her thefiery determination to carve out a successful life onher own terms. For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her roots. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to the writer John Taylor.

Pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Stories of child neglect like this hurt my heart in a way that's hard to handle. The disappointments of the author & her siblings are truly heart-breaking at times. But the siblings' resilience, creativity, intelligence, & problem-solving skills were remarkable. But where the book stood out was the undercurrent of family love. That love made it esp. engaging & lifted it above similar memoirs for me.

CherylRussell This is one of those books that has stayed with me through the years. 2d

I. Loved. This. Book. It was very hard to read at times; the author writes of her traumatic childhood very straight-forward and unapologetically. It reminded me a lot of Educated, and it blows my mind that people can suffer like that and come out the other side.

EvaPriest The movie is good, too, just leaves out waaaaay too much of Jeanette‘s beautifully told story (as movies must do). 3mo

I loved this book, but my goodness, I hated the parents! It could so easily have been a ‘misery memoir‘ but was funny and sweet.

This fits #westvirginia for #readingUSA2019. I thought I was behind as I‘ve not read many states recently, but at 35 I‘m still slightly ahead of where I need to be. This is where it might get more difficult though.

I‘ve also just read Three Women and using that for #northdakota, as around half the book is set there.

If you‘re reading this: stop what you‘re doing, & go add this book to your TBR stack, no matter how large it may be. This memoir is totally worth all of the praise it‘s been given. I‘m not typically into memoirs, but this one was addicting & blew me away. It was shocking, heart-wrenching, funny, inspiring... I could talk about this story every day & never get over it. I‘ve just finished and want to re-read. Ms. Walls is truly admirable. ❤️😭

I related to a lot in this memoir about growing up in a dysfunctional family. I applaud the author and her siblings for forging their own paths and not surrendering to the life their parents set in motion for them. Life is hard and sometimes being a kid sucks and being a parent can suck, too. We are not responsible for the choices other people make, whether good or bad, right or wrong. Our lives are our own. Great memoir. 4.5/5 stars.

4.5/5 ?

Very well written memoir about an extremely interesting, chaotic & dysfunctional family. Her parents did some pretty messed up, unforgivable things but I love hearing the author speak about her parents/life, "...I don't see myself as a victim, I see myself as somebody who got some incredible gifts...". Well, her parents have sure built a resilient, strong & intelligent woman!! What an incredible story.

I can‘t say I enjoyed reading this memoir, although I enjoyed the author‘s voice and the story was well told, reflecting the conflicts the author struggles with. Clearly these parents did love their children in their own way but no part of me could see the positives in their upbringing, and I felt sadder and angrier as the book progressed. This one is an emotional rollercoaster and has left me with a shadow lurking that I can‘t shake off.

lynneamch I thought the movie was good too. Not quite as dark as the book. Interesting bit at the end of the DVD where she reconnects with her mother. 😲 10mo

The Glass Castle was not for me.

I am certainly glad Jeanette Walls survived and was able to tell and share her story. The Glass Castle, in my opinion, was overhyped, and I simply could not get over how neglectful her parents were.

Depressing. And just when you think it can‘t get any worse? It gets worse. I just can‘t rate a book very highly if I‘m not left with hope.

Note: This is my photo of Belhurst Castle in New York. Incredible!

Princess-Kingofkings I had a hard time watching the movie. A friend told me that book was worse. I'm thankful for your review. I won't waste my time reading it. 10mo

Just watched the Glass Castle. While it was a good movie, I thought it was a little too sentimental when compared to the book. Granted, I read the book a long time ago, shortly after it came out, so maybe I‘m not remembering accurately, but I thought the movie glossed over a lot of the more horrible aspects of the Walls‘ childhood.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders They were all very clean weren't they? While Woody Harrelson was great in his role, found they missed some of the grittiness that was in the book. Good movie, but here, yeah book better than the movie. 😚 10mo

This was a tough one. As someone who grew up in a dysfunctional family, it was relatable, also triggering. Thank god for the people who took me in when I was in HS. And as a social worker who worked in child welfare for several years, this book broke my heart and angered me. The Wells children fell between the cracks, as so many children in our country do. This book was a perfect example of the resilency of children. The human spirit is amazing.

Tamra Totally agree. I wondered the same, how did the system fail them? I suspect there are communities that are MYOB closed/hostile to services and admittedly sometimes for good reason. Tragic. 😑 11mo
sammisho @Tamra There was the social service worker that came, but never followed up! Made me so angry! But it was also a different time. I also know, from personal experience, families can be very good at making things look okay to the outside world. Also, people hate to get involved. So often neighbors, teachers, ect suspect but never say a word. Usually until it is too late. 11mo
See All 9 Comments
Tamra @sammisho yes! After reading & watching the film, the one question I‘d like to ask her is if in retrospect (as an adult) she still wouldn‘t want to have been be separated from her parents. I recall as a child she was opposed to it. 11mo
sammisho @tamra I have worked with kids whose parents did awful, vile things or they were taken out of just unbelievable circumstances...and they still want to be with their parents. It so innate to want that. 11mo
monalyisha I‘m sorry you struggled with the similarities but happy it ended up being a “pick” for you — & about your ability to find the silver lining & see the resiliency of the human spirit. 💕 I also have a friend whose mother has done TERRIBLE things to her (including having her committed *on her birthday,* falsely claiming that she was a danger to her younger sisters 😭😤); still she chooses to continue the relationship. Hard to understand — & to judge. 11mo
sammisho @monalyisha It is hard to understand. I cut mosy of my family out of my life, mainly to protect my own children, but I still miss them and think about them. Wish things could be different. That never goes away I think. 11mo
veehabib I also found this book triggering because of past experiences and because of that it became one of those books that I couldn't put down, yet had to take breaks from every so often. I'm so sorry for the past that you had but I'm happy to hear that you have some wonderful children of your own to raise lovingly ❤️ 11mo

"The Glass Castle" is one of those books that stick with you long after you read it. I am still in a bit of awe about how the Walls children were to take their lives into their own hands after it becomes obvious at a young age that their father is a drunk and their mother is caught in her own head. And it is certainly an interesting conversation to have on family and what it means to love.

This book was amazing. It is so hard to imagine how a person could go through all that she did. Jeanette dealt with not only her parents problems, eating food from dumpsters, several sexual assaults, severe burns, and so much more. I watched an interview with her where she said that she didn't play the victim because she wasn't one. She let her experiences mold her into the successful writer she is today.
