I reread this earlier this week and I still liked it. The first 100pgs is hard because there are so many characters are introduced but Beukes threads them masterfully together against the biggest character in here, the city of Detroit. This was wonderful, and scary, and I went to a horror bookclub tonight at an Albuquerque library where wonderful people had some really thoughtful things to say. Pick!
Hey peeps!!! These are the books ive pulled for Group C of #LMPBC let me know which you‘s like.
January #Roll100!!!
#96 - next in the Sookie Stackhouse series (GR lists all the collections that contain Sookie short stories as part of the series, so I‘m reading all of those too, and have really liked some of the stories from other authors). I actually only have 1 or 2 Sookie novels left.
#84 - This Is Where I Leave You (I‘ve seen and enjoyed the movie)
#45 - Broken Monsters (my 2nd Beukes; I loved The Shining Girls. SO excited for this one)
4.8⭐️ OMG! This book is so good… crazy and F‘ed up for sure... but so good. It‘s a paranormal horror type of story that takes you on a crazy thriller of a ride. It uses magical realism and is just so worth the read.
I FINISHED! Took me a hot second to get into it but the end was a ROLLER COASTER OF EMOTIONS. Will get in the post this week! @cozypunk @Reynosa8701 @Littlewolf1
If I hadn't loved the back end of this so much this would have been a so so because it took forever for me to really get into the story. But once things started to really get the fantastical horror vibe I was totally sucked in. I think on the surface this is just a weird murder tale but it goes into so much more depth about social media, perception, and art so it was really intriguing. But it took over half way to really get going.
The past couple days I‘ve been struggling to make myself read this but suddenly today I was finally able to get lost in it for a while. I finally have reached more of the fantasy elements so it‘s less of a slog and more of what I‘m into. I‘m curious to see how the different POV threads will weave together if that‘s even where this goes. I‘m also sad Callie didn‘t join me until after I put the book aside.

Welp. My reading spot has been hijacked. Now I have to figure out an alternative.

It‘s been a couple of days since I‘ve had a good reading buddy moment. Thankfully Cal decided to join me today.

Serial killers, cannibals, monsters, and haunted motels! SO SO SO PUMPED for this #lmpbc round!! (Enjoy my high quality graphic with our book choices and mailing order 😂)
Starting my next read. I‘m a little unsure since the blurb calls it a thriller, I tend to read only genre fic and this was in the general fic section of the library, and I‘m not sure I can do serious business fiction right now. However the group I‘m reading this for shelved it as fantasy so I‘m willing to take the risk.
This #doublespin was super intense 😳 If you‘ve got a trigger as a reader, chances are excellent that it‘s in here. Still, this is QUITE the horror / police procedural, more of a ‘whydunit‘ than a ‘who.‘ Chilling. #bookbingo
Somebody get HBO to make this into the next sci-fi psychological thriller hit series! It was dark and moody and then it took.a.turn. I loved the whole creepy concept.
Lauren Beukes is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book did not disappoint. Mystery with a bit of magical realism. Great book!
Written by a young South African this story is set in Detroit. She falls into cliches about our great city, but some visuals are correct.
There‘s a serial killer loose in the city. Bodies are found with a macabre twist: humans and extras grafted together to create “art”. The end falls into the supernatural. Not for the faint of heart
As an aside, keep the people of Detroit in your prayers.
I started Edgar Allen Poe and the London Monster last night, but then realised it would work for a prompt for a readathon I‘m doing next month, so I picked up Broken Monsters instead #24b4Monday
Whoa this book is great! Twisted thriller with a little bit of supernatural ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
These were both so interesting and disturbing.

Finished this morning. I enjoyed the first half or 3/4 and then the supernatural element just made me feel like I was really missing something. I generally enjoy supernatural twists and inexplicable events but in this particular book, it made it hard to get through the climax and muddied the otherwise compelling stories (IMO).

How morbid is listening to an #audiobook about a serial killer in a cemetary??
Did this book seriously just ruin my desire for a septum piercing?! Goddamn it! I don't know if I should be upset by that or happy I won't end up spending that money?! Lol
Soaking in this long weekend summer sun ☀️🇨🇦☀️

This novel starts out as a pretty standard thriller about a seriously demented serial killer. Then it takes a turn into the extremely weird and disturbing. And while the sudden supernatural elements threw me for a minute, they ultimately paid off.
Wow this was a wild ride! It started out as a “So-So” and ended as a PICK 👍 hadn‘t read a single review, so was completely taken off guard by the thrilling ending.
Is there a genre for contemporary horror? .. because this is it! I didn‘t “love” any character but thought the writing was great. POV chapters told by the cop, her daughter, the hipster journalist, a homeless man and the killer weave a gripping story I really enjoyed!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mystery thriller set in Detroit about a serial killer who creates art pieces and installations with the victims. Multiple points of view I including the killer, good pacing and diverse characters. Downside was a supernatural element brought in, seemed unnecessary and took away from the novel IMO.
#booked2019 1. Female detective And I've officially completed winter 😁 @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage
Feeling regretful I put off reading this book for so long. So creepy and disturbing in a really good way!! #MountTBR #ReadingUSA2019 #Michigan
Detective Versado is a seasoned homicide detective who has seen it all. Or so she thinks. Until one day when she stumbles upon a murder victim. The dead boy has a normal upper body, but his bottom half is that of a deer.

Thank you @kellyann28 for my gifts, everything is perfect! A beautiful stocking, two awesome books from my TBR that I can't wait to read, a book stack ornament, four (!) pairs of socks, and a cozy throw that is already on my couch waiting to be snuggled. Plus two really cool bookmarks! Did you make them?! Thanks again for spoiling me with these lovely goodies ☺️🎄❤️
And thank you for hosting such a great swap @Avanders ! #stuffedstockingswap
Starting this right before bed isn‘t the absolute worst idea I‘ve ever had, right?
Candy is ready. Porch light is on. Scary music playing. #callingallthemonsters
I had a lot of fun playing along with #Octoberxfiles! Thanks for putting it together @Cinfhen and @Robothugs!
Really enjoying this spooky thriller, have no idea what's coming next 😱😱

2. Laundry. Always laundry.
3 Broken Monsters - was awesome once I got about halfway.
4. Groceries and a Diet Ski
5. Pasta. Pasta. And more pasta.
This book! Strange, creepy, murder and mayhem with a supernatural twist! #monstermash #octoberxfiles
Kept trying to read this in bits and pieces during a week of work, but it wasn‘t really going well . Gritty Detroit police procedural, check, mother -daughter angst, check, serial killer check, boho PoMo check, all in bits. Finished work and started all over again and couldn‘t put it down. Supernatural thriller, shades of Charlie Parker! This, and Only Lovers Left Alive is my Detroit. Nicely done.
I‘ve finished my first #screamathon book! It took me almost a week to read. I had such a hard time with the first half. I felt it was tedious, and I had to force myself to read on. But the second half? Wow! I read the second half in two sittings, having fallen asleep reading. It was riveting. Creative, original, and suspenseful-couldn‘t put it down for anything. Would I recommend it- absolutely. But a slow starter for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just started this for #screamathon. Gonna be a creepy month!

Why is it so hard to pick my next read?!?! Decisions, decisions.
A good book, in my opinion, but not the stand out I was expecting from other reviews. Interesting but I didn't feel much tension as much of the foreshadowing actually revealed plot points much to easily. Though it was a short book it still felt as if the story wandered about needlessly.
"They were so dead-set on naturalizing themselves, and her especially, that it was always English, English, English."
My father absolutely refused to allow us to learn Spanish growing up. He forbade my Grandmother and Auntie from teaching us. He'd yell at us if we spoke any Spanish. He wanted his #biracial children to pass for white in every way possible.
Very well paced lit-myst-thriller. Rarely wanted to put down but also wanted to keep more for later.
