The Ghost Bride
The Ghost Bride | Yangsze Choo
Yangsze Choo s stunning debut, The Ghost Bride, is a startlingly original novel infused with Chinese folklore, romantic intrigue, and unexpected supernatural twists. Li Lan, the daughter of a respectable Chinese family in colonial Malaysia, hopes for a favorable marriage, but her father has lost his fortune, and she has few suitors. Instead, the wealthy Lim family urges her to become a ghost bride for their son, who has recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, a traditional ghost marriage is used to placate a restless spirit. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at what price?Night after night, Li Lan is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, where she must uncover the Lim family s darkest secrets and the truth about her own family.Reminiscent of Lisa See s Peony in Love and Amy Tan s The Bonesetter s Daughter, The Ghost Bride is a wondrous coming-of-age story and from a remarkable new voice in fiction."

I loved this for both its story and language. It‘s set in Colonial Malaysia, but features Chinese mythology, related to the afterlife. A young woman has been asked to become a Ghost Bride - to marry the recently dead son of another more well off family. Despite her refusal, she finds herself dreaming of the world of ghosts, and is forced to try and free herself from the attentions of the denizens of the afterlife.

Fascinating story with interesting characters and beautiful imagery. My favorite was the mysterious Er Lang and I would love to see a continuation of the story. I will probably have to buy a physical copy because I love this cover so much❤️

Book discussed in October at BookMarkPR.We also had an interview with author through Skype.Story is related mostly with events that occur in the afterlife world where you will see treasons, betrayals, love. Author explained that story is based basically on history & traditions of Malaysia.I love to know about traditions & history from other countries but some parts were strange for me but I liked her writing style. I really enjoyed it. 3.65/3.7⭐️

Liatrek I‘m currently listening to the audio and really enjoying it. 2w
Gissy @Liatrek There is a mysterious character who Li Lan will follow. I can't say anymore without spoil the story. I liked that character. We asked if there will be a sequel but at this moment it is not contemplated, but you will see that a sequel will be nice. 2w

Finally got to finish this little gem today. Plant sale, then farmer‘s market, then quick breakfast and reading. I really enjoyed this book. I tend to appreciate when folk tales from cultures I know little about are used by authors of that heritage. I stopped several times to look up history or references as I went along, so I learned a lot. Fantastic read. So looking forward to her latest book now.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Loved this book too! 5mo

Behold my rather restrained #bookhaul from yesterday‘s #atxbookstorecrawl 😄 I visited 12 bookstores and only walked away with 5 books, I‘m quite proud of myself. Master Keaton and The Dead Hand were recommendations by staff at the comic book stores I visited. Ghost bride was the #blinddatewithabook I got from BookPeople. Here‘s Your Hat... was a book used for a photo prompt I ended up buying. Isola just sounded interesting. Fun times ahead!

This book had been on my radar for years and I'm so glad I finally bought and read it. Really enjoyed it--the writing style took me a chapter or two to get into, but overall it's a very strong book for a debut. One of my favourites so far this year. Looking forward to reading her new book. But mostly... can't wait for the Netflix drama adaptation of this one to release! The teaser trailer looks so good 😍

batsy Glad to hear you liked it! And didn't know there's a series coming out. I really enjoyed The Night Tiger. 8mo
llwheeler The Ghost Bride is going to be a 6 ep Netflix Mandarin original drama. So far there's no date announced, only 2019, and only a 30 second teaser trailer, but it looks like it will be so good! I definitely will be picking up The Night Tiger when I get a chance! 8mo

“This practice of arranging the marriage of a dead person was uncommon, usually held in order to placate a spirit. A deceased concubine who had produced a son might be officially married to elevate her status to a wife. Or two lovers who died tragically might be united after death. That much I knew. But to marry the living to the dead was a rare and, indeed, dreadful occurrence.”

It‘s an #ownvoices Chinese historical fiction story about a girl who is approached to become a bride to a wealthy family‘s deceased son. She visits the family home & begins being haunted by the young man, while finding herself enraptured by the family‘s new, young heir.

An interesting glimpse into Malaysian culture and a plot guided by the rare practice of a living person marrying the spirit of a deceased person.

#NoFemmeber #burningbride reminds me of the ancient Chinese tradition of ‘ghost marriage‘ (marriage in which one or both parties are deceased). In this story, the young daughter of a bankrupt merchant family receives a proposal from a wealthy and powerful family to become a ghost bride for their recently deceased son. Events unfold where night after night, she is drawn to the ‘afterlife‘ with paper funeral offerings and vengeful spirits.

Billypar This sounds really good. And it seems like there are some parallels to the practice highlighted in the book that @EadieB and @arlenefinnigan posted and that seemed to inspire the song as well- a horrific sacrifice due to a bride's family being too poor. 12mo

Bailedbailed

I really want to like this book! Growing up in a Chinese family and in Malacca, I could relate so much to this story. The superstitions, beliefs and customs brought back so much childhood memories. But the story is getting nowhere (really out of focus), makes no sense and the main character Li Lan annoys me too much. So I had to bail on this book. At least I read halfway 😣

I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to throttle the MC at times because she made such stupid decisions, but then realized that she acted just like a 17 year old girl. Teens always think they can handle anything, and when they do get good advice, they rarely take it. Discussing this with my Vietnamese friend was fun, as they have similar beliefs in her country. The notations at the end were good, too.

This unique ghost story brings the Chinese expat community to life - and death - in vivid detail. Li Lan‘s family fortunes have fallen so far, she may become the ‘ghost bride‘ of a man who has recently died. Indeed, he‘s so determined to have Li that he hatches a plot from beyond the grave to possess her. And that‘s just the start. There‘s mystery, romance, the Afterworld, and more as Li Lan fights to control her own fate. Superb! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
