Fantastic middle grade story taking place in Gary, Indiana and Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression. Deza Malone is smart, funny, courageous and fiercely loyal to those she loves. I highly recommend the audiobook, read by Bahni Turpin.

megnews One of my daughter‘s favorites. 2w
MaureenMc @megnews It‘s so good! I‘m looking forward to sharing this one with my daughter when she‘s a bit older. 2w

The Women of the Copper Country | Mary Doria Russell

This novel follows the real life events of a copper mining union strike on the upper peninsula of Michigan in 1913. Annie Clements and the women‘s auxiliary played a pivotal role in the events. This is not a happy book, but it is well-written and engaging. I have yet to read a book by Russell and be disappointed.

Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen The Sparrow was fantastic. I‘ve also read Epitaph, a historical fiction about the OK corral. She‘s not quite genre-defying, but she definitely likes to mix it up. And she does it well. 2w
Cinfhen I agree; she seems to write all over the place but I‘m curious about both books you mentioned 2w
Cinfhen Thanks for the recommendations ☺️ 2w

John Bacon is well known in Ann Arbor. I‘ve met him a few times. My husband is at the game. Let‘s hope they beat Iowa today or he will not be very happy when he gets home. GO BLUE! 💙🏈💛

Totally forgot to mark my September progress. Still slow and steady at the end of the year. Fall is always so busy... so less reading. #swensonreads #swensonreads19

Based on the real life labour activist Annie Clemenc, a figure I knew little about - so the historical context, skilfully recreated with a great balance between staying historically accurate, but bringing the characters to life - was fascinating. I got a really good sense of this community - the fragility of life in the mines. A book that not only taught me a lot, but I thorough enjoy as well - a good combination!

Wife #stacked #MittenLitten s may be interested because it takes place in Calumet Michigan. 2w

Really enjoying this - strong union women shaping their community. George just wants me to turn the light out though so he can sleep!🤣

Clwojick awe, sweet George. 😍 3w
DGRachel I feel like I owe George an apology. 😂 3w

Mitch @wanderinglynn @Clwojick George joined our family a few years ago - he‘s a feral stray, has lived a long and hard life. But since choosing us as his family he will only sleep on feather duvets! 🤣 3w
wanderinglynn But of course! As ruler of his kingdom, you can‘t expect him to sleep like a mere peasant! At least that‘s what my TeddyCat tells me. 😹😹😹 3w
Mitch @wanderinglynn too true! 3w
Clwojick 😂 😂@DGRachel 😂 😂 He definitely looks a little offended. 3w
Clwojick @Mitch Awe, no wonder why I am so drawn to him. George has a very similar look to Oscar Meyer. My little Oscar was a feral babe when we caught him at 7 months. He has been with our family for 5 years and he's VERY spoiled, but he still gives me that pouty look when he's not getting his way. 3w
Mitch @Clwojick George likes to remind us that he spent his first 10 years sleeping rough so he‘s got time to make up! Sounds like he‘s Oscars long lost second cousin! 3w

Question for all my Litsy friends! My parents just moved to Ann Arbor, MI and I am visiting them this next week. Are there any great places in the area that I should visit? Bookish or otherwise?

Thanks friends! 💙📚😬💜

BookNAround There are a ton of great independent bookstores in Ann Arbor! And since I love cheese, I always hit Zingerman‘s Deli to restock my cheese drawer. I don‘t love the sandwiches (overpriced imo) there but generally you can‘t go wrong eating out anywhere in town. (edited) 4w
AmyG The Literati bookstore on Washington St is my favorite. Such a wonderful store owned by a lovely couple. Ann Arbor is an amazing town. We go all the time - we have season football tickets. Sat mornings by Zingermans is the market...produce, vegetables, baked goods, homemade items- amazing. Go Blue! (edited) 4w
HufflepuffGirl90 @BookNAround and @AmyG thank you so much!! I will definitely be diving into the Literati and other independent bookstores, plus give Zingermans a good visit. I‘ll have a week to explore (and fill up my suitcase) before heading home. 😉 3w
AmyG Check also the U of Michigan. There is an art museum on State St. The campus is beautiful. 3w
