Hearts In Atlantis
Hearts In Atlantis | Stephen King
Stephen King, whose first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974, the year before the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, is the first hugely popular writer of the TV generation. Images from that war -- and the protests against it -- had flooded America's living rooms for a decade. Hearts in Atlantis, King's newest fiction, is composed of five interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War. In Part One, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighborhood. He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror. In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest...and confront their own collective heart of darkness, where laughter may be no more than the thinly disguised cry of the beast. In "Blind Willie" and "Why We're in Vietnam," two men who grew up with Bobby in suburban Connecticut try to fill the emptiness of the post-Vietnam era in an America which sometimes seems as hollow -- and as haunted -- as their own lives. And in "Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling," this remarkable book's denouement, Bobby returns to his hometown where one final secret, the hope of redemption, and his heart's desire may await him. Full of danger, full of suspense, most of all full of heart, Stephen King's new book will take some readers to a place they have never been...and others to a place they have never been able to completely leave.

This was not a favorite of mine of Kings..I truly wasn‘t sure what I was reading half the time and wasn‘t aware it was 5 stories in one that intertwined. It took me over a month to finish this hefty book. Although the writing is good as always, the story just didn‘t do it for me 😟

tokorowilliamwallace Yay, one of the few Stephen King I've finished and remember liking. 3w
Bec_lectic @tokorowilliamwallace did you ever read 11/22/63? That is my absolute fav King book 😊 3w
tokorowilliamwallace @Bec_lectic I haven't. Currently I'm gunning for both The Tommyknockers (quality nostalgia vibes and characterization) and Cujo (slice-of-life era context! with the ad men sub plot). I'd probably need to find a thrifted copy in a paperback edition. Is there a lot of conspiracy theory rambling and detail-oriented text in it? If so, a greater chance for me to like it. 3w
Bec_lectic @tokorowilliamwallace definitely some detail-oriented text but not much on the conspiracy theory. It‘s a story of potentially rewriting history through time travel. It‘s a hefty novel but I read it in 5 days because it was so good. I have yet to read Tommyknockers or Cujo. They are on my list! 2w

I‘ve always been a huge fan of Stephen Kings writing and non horror books. Don‘t forget he wrote Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. An effort was made to make this into a movie but it barely touched one third of the book. Not even Anthony Hopkins could save it. The book is five linked stories full of stunning writing and page turning suspense. I also loved 22/11/63 and Revival the ending of which he said scared even him 😬

Cathythoughts That‘s quite a recommendation 👍🏻 stacking. 4mo

This came highly recommended from a friend… yet I‘m almost 200 pages in and it‘s not holding my interest at all. Being only my second Stephen King novel I‘m giving it a go.

tjwill It‘s been a very long time since I read it (around when it was first published), but I seem to remember that it switches to another storyline and then you can start to see how they connect by the end. Sorry you‘re not enjoying it, but maybe it will start to improve for you when you get to the next part. 10mo
PrezBookster @tjwill Thank you! I hope so too! It just seems that in 200 pages I should have gotten more from the story by now. 10mo
AmandaBlaze I believe this book was written after King had a near fatal motorcycle accident. It has a different tone than any of his other works. 10mo

I enjoyed my time back on the Beam which basically means I liked the beginning section and the end the middle was a bit meh for me.

I did have some problems with this book which I posted previously this is one where I feel things could have been done better but I am still in awe of the way King keeps his multiverse going.

This is more a rant than a blurb. I was happily revisiting the King multiverse with its Dark Tower vibe when bang this happened…

Girl attacked by 3 teenage boys (non sexual) but the adults clean up the blood send her home with no police involved at all!!

And then…

Woman is violently sexually assaulted doesn‘t call the police and our supposed nice guy basically tells her she asked for it and slut shames her.

Really disappointed

Y is for Yellow. Whether it's men in Yellow Coats, a store with Yellow in the name, or an iconic Yellow raincoat on a kid, it's hard to deny that King obviously has a connection with his works and the color yellow. I've always wondered why he chose yellow. Maybe someday I'll ask him if I get the chance.

For A my choice is Atlantis, as in "Hearts in Atlantis", not one of my favorites and one I've never re-read. Still, it had one of the most memorable quotes. Part of Bobby's description of the Low Men (the Can-Toi of The Dark Tower). This book might need a re-read if I ever get around to starting The Dark Tower books again.

"Hearts are tough, Most times they don't break. Most times they only bend."

Well my little heart is pretty bent out of shape over this collection. No body writes the innocence of childhood like Uncle Stevie. The language in here is beautiful. The stories are magical. The characters, dare I say, are full of hearts. I didn't want this book to end. Good thing there's a movie to tie me over. I have a feeling I'm gonna re-read this at some point. ?

KathyWheeler Have you read the Dark Tower series? 5y
EricQiao @KathyWheeler Read The Waste Land right before this one. Will I find out more about "The Breakers" in the 4th book? 5y
KathyWheeler @EricQiao in the 4th book, no -- not even in the 5th (although you will start to get some hints there), but you will find out more about them in the last two books. 5y
See All 12 Comments
EricQiao @KathyWheeler Good to know! I'm so glad all the books in the series are published. No waiting for the compulsive. I shall read on! 5y
KathyWheeler @EricQiao I remember when King was hit by that van and very seriously injured; when I first heard the news, my first awful thought was, "Oh no! The Dark Tower isn't finished!" Listened to the entire series recently-- it was nice to not to have to wait for the next book. 5y
KathyWheeler @EricQiao I know! Neil Gaiman saying "George R R Martin is not your bitch" is all well and good, but what if something happens to him before he finishes the story?! 5y
EricQiao @KathyWheeler Ha-ha! In an interview with Stephen King, Martin said the creepiest thing a reader sent him was a paperback of Misery. I reckon that reader was responding to Gaiman. Like saying, "Yeah, tell that to Annie Wilkes." ? (edited) 5y
ptkpepe98 @EricQiao - I tried to reply to your email, but it kicked back. I posted a review, but it probably shows up as Amazon customer because I keep forgetting to change it to my name. Keep writing! I'll keep reading!😀 5y

A tough prompt today, but I'm going for the title story in this collection. I failed an accounting test because of this book. I wasn't going to do well anyway, but I read this for hours instead of studying.
