The Reading List: A Novel by Sara Nisha Adams

Birthday Girl | Niko Wolf
Mehso-so

It's described as a “propulsive thriller,” but it's not. It's a slow burn psych suspense. Jonathan‘s wife Maddie disappeared on her b-day 20+ yrs ago & despite achieving success as a writer after her death, he's never recovered. There's very little action, & most of the story takes place in his head. The characters are unlikeable/despicable. It ended up being just a so-so read. Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Testaments: A Novel | Margaret Atwood
post image

After reading an article about how Amazon violated the agreement with the publisher of The Testaments by shipping copies of the book a full week before last week‘s release & how that‘s yet another unfair practice Amazon used to kill indie book stores, I decided to order the book from an indie bookseller rather than Amazon. It arrived today with this adorable customized artwork. 😍😁 You made my day, Avid Bookshop!!

I realize that I'm like a month (or more)-old newspaper, but I just saw this post from the Decatur Book Festival recognizing one of our fellow Littens!! Congratulations, @Well-ReadNeck !! This is very cool. And you did an amazing job; this year's presenter list is incredible!! #dbf2019

Well-ReadNeck Awww, thanks!! Hope to see you there!!! 5y
Theresa @Well-ReadNeck I will definitely be there! I've talked it up so much that a co-worker may actually join me. I'm hoping to attend the opening session on Friday night, too, & that'll be a first for me. 5y

I've read a lot of books I've given 4 stars to, but I'm stingy with 5 stars. I have to basically get a book hangover in order to give something 5 stars. This book definitely qualifies. Tessa Fontaine weaves together the story of her season traveling with a carnival side show and her mother's series of massive strokes. I know, it sounds odd, but give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wind-Up Bird Chronicle | Haruki Murakami, Murakami
post image

I haven't read anything by Haruki Murakami, but I want to as evidenced by the fact that I own these 2 + 1Q84 on audio + preordered his latest. Where should I start? With 1 that I already own or is there something that's a better entry point?

sisilia Wind Up is my favorite Murakami 😍 Go for it! If you‘d like something lighter, try Kafka on the Shore or Norwegian Wood 6y
Lauren.Archer The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is good one to start with. I personally started with 1Q84 and was fine, but it is very long and can go off on some long tangents. 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf I only read one of his books and I really liked it 6y

Of all the great authors I saw & all the great books discussed at the Decatur Book Festival today, I think this is the one I want to tackle 1st. I don't think it will be easy, but I feel like it might be a good companion piece to Chasing Portraits, our last @litsybookclub read. I was so engrossed in the discussion during this session that I didn't take a picture of the panel, so you have to make do with a picture of the book.#dbf2018

After the Decatur Book Festival tonight I had the pleasure of attending a viewing of the documentary The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin, followed by a Q&A with Maupin. Although I've heard of Maupin, I just recently started reading his stuff. Now I want to read it all. Immediately. AM said Netflix is doing a new take on Tales of the City & some original cast members will be back!! Can't wait to see him again tomorrow!! #dbf2018

Rachbb3 That is a question I asked myself after reading the book and cpuldnt come up with an answer. The book gave equal attention to Levin and Kitty's story and I wondered, why Anna? I'd be interested to see what others think. 6y
Ash.on.the.line I feel like Anna‘s decision affected all the other characters in some way or another. We got Levin‘s story but it didn‘t have the same effect as Anna‘s at least in my opinion of course lol. 6y
DrexEdit @Ash.on.the.line I agree. It was Anna's choices that made all the other stories happen. 6y
Tameeka I wondered why name the book after Anna too. I have to agree with the other comments that Anna's decisions rippled out to the people around her. 6y

Erin7 To be honest, I enjoyed it as an academic exercise and see why it‘s a classic. There were parts of the story that I just loved but other parts that really dragged for me. 6y
DrexEdit I loved it. I can see why it's widely considered not just a classic, but a masterpiece. 6y
Rachbb3 Loved it!!! The rest of the books I read in 2018 are going to have to be pretty spectacular to beat it. 💟 6y

Brenda Loved it! 6y
Theresa I feel like I'm going against the grain, but, although I loved the book thru part 6, it kind of dropped off for me in the last 2 parts. Maybe it's because I knew what happened to Anna (damn you, Wikipedia, & your spoilers 😜) . I still liked the book, my impression just fell from lived to liked at the end. 6y

Tameeka Without jumping into the next sections, I'm not sure if Levin's philosophies changed that much after marrying Kitty. I see him as an eternal seeker. Prior to marriage, Levin was concerned about his self and serfs. He did have an idealistic view of marriage but, once in it, Levin realized marriage does not = perfection. Seeing the suffering & death of his brother brought on deeper searching for life's purpose. 6y

I'm so late with the Week 3 questions. Sorry!!

#AnnaKareninaReadAlong

suvata I learned how strong the hold was on the Russian people by the Orthodox Church. A century later this would‘ve been a whole different story. Women really no way out of a marriage if the husband didn‘t agree to a divorce. (edited) 6y
Kristy_K @suvata Yes, women really had no options when it came to divorced, remarriage, etc. Men had a lot more freedom and control. 6y
Tameeka We're at the mercy of the men. It's still prevalent today but not as bad as needing your husband, father, or brother to give you permission to do everything in life. I know that was incredible frustrating for Anna not just with the divorce but having to marry someone she didn't love because of expectation & status. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Women were so dependent on men, who had the say in everything. Women had to conform to society‘s expectations, which were biased and favoured men. Married men who had affairs were easily forgiven but for women, they were shunned from society and became outcasts. (edited) 6y

Rachbb3 I wasn't surprised. Anna is selfish, has her cake and wants to eat it too. I have to say that I didn't feel sorry for her in her delirium. I actually felt sorry for her husband and I'm not too much of a fan there. She and Vronsky are a perfect match. 6y
Austen_Nerd I am so bad, I looked at the post and and I am not there yet. Now, I have to read faster to get there. They are definitely two peas in a pod. 6y
Theresa @Austen_Nerd Oh no!!😨 6y
See All 8 Comments
bedandabook I agree that they are they perfect match. I can‘t stand Anna‘s husband either, but still felt some sympathy for him. Was it really so much to ask, to not have Vronsky visit their home? I do, however, feel that Anna loves her son more than her husband does so from the child‘s point of view it is sad she loses him. 6y
whatsthEStorey I was a little surprised. I didn't think Alexey would allow that to happen. He seemed set on punishing Anna. I have really disliked him through most of the book, but during her illness, he proved himself to be a much better person than I imagined. I kind of hoped that Anna would see that and they would find a love together. Also, it seemed Vronsky was tiring of the affair. I thought he'd be moving on. I think it's an ill-fated choice. 6y
Tameeka When Anna did not die in childbirth, I felt as Alexey did. He still had to live with this. They tried again to live with an arrangement but Anna still could not let go of Vronsky. I think it's a bad choice b/c she'll miss her son. Alexey even began to care for her daughter. Will they find true happiness in Europe? I don't think so. 6y
Jess_Read_This @Tameeka I had the same thoughts and feelings too. Alexey generates sympathy from me during Anna‘s close call w death scenes. He also seems thoughtful as he revisits Dolly‘s words on forgiveness. I think it was a bad call going to Europe with Vronksy. Practical standpoint: the guy lives off his brother and mom‘s (at times) money. Or from moneylenders. How do they expect to live? Anna has a lifestyle and how will that work w Vronksy‘s finances? 6y
Tameeka @Jess_Read_This agreed. Where is the money going to come from to support Anna and Vronsky's lifestyle? 6y

DrexEdit He strikes me as shallow. As we get to know Vronsky and Anna better, I do wonder if they have any basis for a relationship besides mutual attraction. 6y
Jess_Read_This @DrexEdit I agree. When he disappears to “organize” himself, we get a picture of the bleakness of his finances and his frame of mind. He‘s not a deep man and seems to be an “in the moment” kind of guy. He also doesn‘t seem to handle life stressors well either. He seems content with his lifestyle which makes me wonder what will happen when it changes in part 5&6! (edited) 6y
Kristy_K I feel like he‘s a character we‘re not suppose to particularly like, but I can‘t help but like him! He entertains me even if he does seem a man of little substance. 6y
See All 14 Comments
Rachbb3 He seems to be very immature and makes decisions by how he feels. A grown up "kid". 6y
Tameeka Omg. I think those two are made for each other 🙄 They both seem to live for instant gratification. Vronsky tries to plan his future but everything is about what he needs in the moment. When he gives up his promotion the 2nd time to escape w/ Anna, I threw my hands up in the air. 6y
bedandabook ‘A man of little substance‘ is the perfect way to describe him, @Kristy_K, but I feel the same way about Anna. They are likely to be happy together for 5 minutes until someone else comes along to distract one of them. I thought the two of them showed a little more depth (but that‘s not hard) in the section we‘ve just read, but overall I still feel they are both shallow characters. 6y
whatsthEStorey I don't like him much, but I can see how Anna, feeling unloved and lonely, could fall for his charm. I think Anna is naive to believe in his love for her. I think he's weak and unprepared to care for a woman and child. The second she shows any emotion or behavior that doesn't fit his ideal of femininity, he feels she's a "faded flower." And he doesn't love his mother. This is not the kind of guy you pull up stakes and run away with. 6y
Jess_Read_This @whatsthEStorey Right?!!! He‘s not a long term sure bet for commitment. I found myself saying “Anna... don‘t do it.. don‘t it.. ugh!!” 6y
Erin7 I complete agree about Vronsky. I see a series of affairs in his future. But, I‘ll be honest, I don‘t really like Anna much at this point. I feel like she was bored with her life and became a crow following a shiny stone. 6y
Erin7 @whatsthEStorey Exactly in point!! 6y
whatsthEStorey @Erin7 & @Jess_Read_This I feel his attention waning already! Wandering eyes wander. 👀 6y
Erin7 @whatsthEStorey Well, of course...she‘s totally devoted to him at the moment. The challenge of the chase is lost. 6y
Jess_Read_This @whatsthEStorey @Erin7 I really only found Anna likeable in part one. Then realized after it was pointed out in discussion, we see Anna through Kitty‘s eyes for the most part in part one! So now that I‘m seeing Anna for Anna..she doesn‘t drum up strong emotions for me like Levin or Kitty do in their parts. 6y
Erin7 @Jess_Read_This I thought a lot about how much Kitty idealized Anna. I get the impression that she was looking for someone to look up to. I think think the author changed our view of her to coincide with Kitty‘s heartbreak at seeing that there was something between Vronski and Anna. 6y

Rachbb3 I like Levin. He seems so lost. I think his broken heart just has him looking for purpose and to connect with people. 6y
sprainedbrain I absolutely loved that whole sequence... Levin is one of my favorites, and his internal struggles with what to do with himself are fascinating. I couldn‘t believe how interesting mowing a field was! 6y
Austen_Nerd I love Levin. We raise hay and to read about the mowers of the day was fascinating. I think Levin is a man who knows himself and thinks for himself, yet is searching for something to fill his life or maybe the hole in his heart, the loneliness. 6y
See All 17 Comments
Kristy_K @Austen_Nerd Nicely put! I agree. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I need to catch up, have not started Part 4. Who knows mowing fields can be so interesting! I loved that he is joining the peasants in the hard labour and enjoying himself! I‘m liking Levin so far. 6y
Austen_Nerd @Kristy_K Thank you, I worry that I don‘t make sense sometimes. I love Litsy because of this read alongs. I have no one else to talk books with. 6y
Kristy_K @Austen_Nerd Same on all accounts. :) 6y
Rachbb3 @Austen_Nerd I don't have anyone to talk to about books either which is why I love this community so much. 💟 6y
Ash.on.the.line I actually posted about this! I was drawn in and enjoyed Levins thoughts on this. we got to see more of his thoughts and such. However I was ready to move on after awhile lol! 6y
DrexEdit I loved reading this section. I think besides the great descriptions there was a whole lot more going on here. It's interesting to see Tolstoy, a Russian aristocrat, idealize peasant life. It's interesting to see that he has Levin thinking he could live as a peasant, at least until he sees Kitty again. The juxtaposition between Levin working the fields and his half-brother is also very revealing! 6y
Theresa @Ash.on.the.line Your post inspired the question. I loved that part of the story & when I saw your post it made me realize others did too so it might be discussion-worthy. 😄 6y
Jess_Read_This I love Levin. Since the beginning of the book, his parts were the ones I looked forward to reading about. I love how he finds that state of contentment he is searching for when he mowing. The comradeship and acceptance from the peasant workers was what he needed. Yet, he eventually is dissatisfied with it and is searching for that missing piece in his life. I love the scene with him and Kitty writing in chalk. ❤️ That‘s one that will stay with me! 6y
Tameeka Levin is like so many of us. We have all these big questions on life and it's in the everyday moments where we find our purpose. The mowing was a meaningful passage for me. Here's Levin thinking that he can totally do this work. Then the humility that comes with realizing maybe he's not as able as he thinks. And then his time with the old man 😌 6y
suvata I think that Levin is the only “real” character in the book. The rest are a bunch of pretentious babies. Still, it‘s interesting to read about them. 6y
suvata Oh yeah, Kitty is pretty cool too. 😝 6y
bedandabook Levin is by far my favourite character too. I loved the field-mowing chapters, and I love his connection with the land and his respect for the peasants. 6y

Austen_Nerd It is exceeding my expectations. I am truly enjoying it. I do not know why I never could get pass the first few chapters. I am glad that I am reading it, the characters, the day to day is fascinating as to where it all will lead. I am also amazed how some things never change from then to now with people. 6y
Kristy_K Better than I expected! I thought it‘d be slow and dull, but I‘m actually getting invested in these characters‘ lives! 6y
Sisasuku It's better and worse at the same time for me. Better because of the variety of characters and the different problems they're facing. But worse because I don't like most of the characters. But it's certainly easier to read than I thought. 6y
Jess_Read_This Completely exceeding expectations! I never expected to enjoy the writing as much as I am. The characters and multiple story line threads have me captivated. 6y
Theresa I'm with everyone else. I was so nervous about reading this & was almost dreading it. But I'm so glad I didn't give up before I even started because I'm enjoying it so much! 6y

bookloo Love Kitty, find Levin soooo boring. 😬 6y
Suelizbeth I like Dolly, Kitty and Anna, although Dolly and Kitty seem to be less intellectual than Anna, but have the higher moral ground. Stepan is a likable scoundrel. Levin can be a bore but he has admirable qualities. Vronsky is the hero but I don‘t find him to be as admirable as Levin. And I can‘t stand Anna‘s husband, even though he has been wronged. (edited) 6y
bedandabook I‘m disliking Vronsky, and I‘m finding Anna foolish. Both of them are striking me as shallow. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Ash.on.the.line I find Anna and Vronsky shallow like bedandabook said. None of the characters so far are my favorite. 6y
Rachbb3 I really like Levin and Dolly. Vronsky and Anna are horrible. Lol. 6y
Tameeka Agreed @Ash.on.the.line I also don't like how dismissive Anna is of her husband. I really feel for Dolly and her situation. 6y
ju.ca.no I‘m with @bedandabook and @Ash.on.the.line I don‘t like Anna and Vronsky shallow seems an accurate description! 6y
Austen_Nerd Anna is all about herself as is her brother. The whole lot of characters seem to be only about themselves, not concerned about how they effect each other, poor Dolly left to herself with her children. Levin, like Dolly if someone truly loved them would be so much better off. 6y
Brenda I'm not finding any of the characters particularly endearing at this point. Vronsky and Anna are both terribly dismissive of others. 6y
sprainedbrain I like Kitty and Dolly, Stepan makes me laugh, I don‘t like Anna or Vronsky much at all, Karenin is annoying, and I loooooove Levin. 6y
Ash.on.the.line @Tameeka yes, Dolly so far is about the only one I feel for so far. 6y
Sisasuku I feel most for Kitty, she made a bad decision and suffers for it. And i can't blame her, she's young and was badly influenced by her mother. I'm sorry for Dolly, who I feel is suffering the most, being in an impossible situation for her. I think it's curious that Anna and Stepan are siblings and both the ones betraying their spouses. Levin seems a bit too perfect. I don't like Vronsky. He doesn't care how his actions affect other people's lifes. 6y
suvata @bedandabook I agree. I think that Vronsky and Anna are quite selfish. I‘m growing to like Levin more each day. 6y
whatsthEStorey I feel for Anna; I think she's trapped in an unhappy, lonely marriage. Her husband isn't evil, but he's sarcastic and dismissive and they have no intimacy. She can't divorce him, and she's still so young. I think she must feel trapped. That said, her affair with Vronsky can't possibly have a happy ending, and not just because Russian lit has no happy endings! 6y
whatsthEStorey @Sisasuku I feel for Kitty, but I also want to give her a little pep talk and tell her to move on, in five years, she'll barely think of of Vronsky, and when she does, it will only be to count her lucky stars she didn't get stuck with him! 6y
whatsthEStorey @Austen_Nerd i feel bad for her too, but I was proud of Dolly, toward the end of part II. She was getting herself together, dressing up, taking charge of the country house, finding joy in her children. I think she has more strength and resilience than it seemed to me earlier on. I hope so! (edited) 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Stephan to me is a happy-go-lucky person, takes pleasures in life, well liked but still a negative point for him for he cheated on his wife. Dolly‘s actions and attitude towards her marriage seem realistic, quite agree with her in most instances. Poor Kitty, still young but feel like giving her a good shake to wake her up fast! Anna is like an enigma..but I don‘t dislike her, I know she is trapped in her marriage. Vronsky is selfish. Lenin I like. 6y
Austen_Nerd @whatsthEStorey I am proud of Dolly too, as I am reading on. I am hoping as we read on we found her getting better in her situation. 6y

I honestly don't think any family or anyone is ever completely happy or unhappy and there are varying levels of each in all families and various times. That quote seems very concrete and don't believe that life is that black and white. 6y
Jess_Read_This I think it is such an interesting opening line. My translator‘s note said he used the Russian word “resemble” rather than “alike” which got me thinking. Portraits of happy families do resemble each other with posing smiling faces. The unhappy ones with the screaming child, parent caught in mid grab for escapee kid, or even the humorous poses/bunny ear family portraits tell a unique story. There‘s depth and even comradeship in unhappiness at times. 6y
See All 17 Comments
Rachbb3 I thought that the opening line was a perfect start to the book. You're immediately brought into the lives of the different characters and how unhappy some of these "happy" families are. A lot of appearances being kept up here. 6y
sprainedbrain I do agree with the opening line. I have heard that line many times and didn‘t realize it was from Anna Karenina until I started it. I do love this book! 6y
quietlycuriouskate I think if you're from an unhappy family, all the happy families resemble each other in a "we're not like them" way. And then a lot of unhappiness is kept hidden, as far as possible, too, in order to preserve an appearance of normality. Maybe a lot of unhappy families are alike in constantly second-guessing what "normal" or "happy" looks like. 6y
Jess_Read_This @River_Voice I think you make a good point especially when applied to this story. 6y
DrexEdit It's interesting that the line is in the present tense. Is it the only line in the book that is? So it's almost like Tolstoy is going to set about proving his statement with the following story. But I only know of unhappy families in the book. Will there be happy families to compare them to? Or is Tolstoy saying we only notice or find interesting the unhappy ones? So many questions... 6y
Kristy_K @DrexEdit I didn‘t catch that. Great questions! 6y
Kristy_K @ju.ca.no I feel the same about happiness vs. unhappy. It seems like there are more ways to be discontent than to be happy. 6y
bedandabook I agree with the quote, and I think it‘s marvellous. Happy families are smiling and laughing, whilst unhappiness comes in many different forms and from many different sources as we go on to discover in the book. 6y
Suelizbeth Tolstoy is not writing about happy families because there is nothing to write about. Their lives are uneventful. Unhappy families, on the other hand, make good stories. 6y
Austen_Nerd The first line does set a tone for what you are to read. Happy families are all the same, but, unhappiness is what may be a blessing to others. We sit up what happiness is and we each have a different definition. 6y
Sisasuku This may be one of the best opening lines I know, but I don't really believe in it. For one, a happy family usually isn't happy all the time. There are still bad patches to overcome, and those are unique for each family. And happiness comes in many forms. But we may see that differently in our time, back then it might have been "following the social norm on the outside" = happy. Or hap 6y
Sisasuku Or happy enough to not be interesting. Do you know what I mean? A scandal is just more interesting than getting through everyday life. Which is why watch soap operas and not a series about people who clean their dishes. 6y
suvata I find the quote to be completely confusing and the more I think about it the more perplexing it becomes. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Late to the party 🙄...It‘s a meaningful and memorable opening line for the novel, my translation says ‘resemble‘ btw. It‘s true happy families resemble each other...although they may have their struggles and not happy, they try to mask their unhappiness behind laughter and all. So, on appearance, they do look alike. 6y

In September it felt like I wouldn't complete any of my reading goals for 2017. I don't know what I did to kick things into gear but something worked. I surpassed my #Goodreads goal, & completed #2017ReadHarderChallenge , #2017LitsyAtoZ , #2017LRC + a few others that I could knock out with crossovers from these 4. Color me shocked!!

In case you're interested & missed this tidbit buried in comments on an earlier post, Oprah's Book Club created a bookmark with the characters. I am so going to print this when I get to the office on Tuesday!! I need help with all the Russian names. 😆http://static.oprah.com/images/obc_classic/book/2004/anna/anna_characters_bookmark.pdf #AnnaKareninaReadAlong

Austen_Nerd Love it!! Thank you 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Thank you! 6y
TheWordJar Yes!! That bookmark saved me when I read Anna! Starting War and Peace tomorrow. I guess today actually! A good list of characters at the beginning that I may need to make into a bookmark to help me along! 6y

I'm all set to begin the #AnnaKareninaReadAlong tomorrow. Marked each section so I can monitor my progress. Here's a question for the Litsy universe...Do you read the introductory information before you start reading a book? After you finish? Somewhere in between? Never?

LectricSheep I‘m always torn on this! It feels ridiculous to complain about spoilers for, like, Middlemarch, but... 🤷🏼‍♀️I stopped reading the introductory material because of spoilers. I go back and read it at the end if I remember. 6y
Theresa @LectricSheep Thank you! That's how I feel, too. I don't want anything spoiling the story. Also, I don't want anything to influence my impression of the story; I like to draw my own conclusions. 6y
Notafraidofwords I read it after. Even if the book is really old. 6y
See All 9 Comments
Dogearedcopy If the book is new-to-me, then I skip the Introduction until after reading the text. If the book is a re-read, I read the Introduction before for added insight, things to look out for and consider 6y
Suelizbeth If it‘s a piece of classical literature, I usually know the outline of the story, so I read the introduction as I find it instructional, especially if the writing style is arcane. 6y
Rachbb3 I usually never. 🤷 I just jump right in. 6y
TheWordJar I always read intro material first, as it usually helps me. But I understand wanting to go in with a blank slate. 6y
Sisasuku I usually read it before the book, but try to skip over the parts that go into detail about the story. Then I read the complete thing after the book. But my version of Anna Karenina doesn't have an introduction. 6y
Brenda I will read it after. I prefer to jump right in 🤓 6y

Two days + a couple minutes until we kick off 2018 with the #AnnaKareninaReadAlong! What edition will you be reading/listening to?

DrexEdit I have an Oxford University Press edition. Translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude. I also have the Project Gutenberg ebook for portability. 6y
Kristy_K I‘m going to probably split my time between serial reader and an audiobook from the library. 6y
Rachbb3 I have the Barnes and Noble Classics edition. 😊 6y
See All 15 Comments
erzascarletbookgasm Mine is the Wordsworth Classics with introduction and notes by E B Greenwood. 6y
ju.ca.no I inherited a pretty old, german one from my mom‘s aunt, a few years ago, so I‘m going to read that one 😊 6y
quietlycuriouskate Mine is a tiny little hardback OUP edition from 1955. It's the Maude translation. I bought it in 1993: this is a re-read for me. 😊 6y
Theresa @drexedit @Kristy_K @Rachbb3 @erzascarletbookgasm @ju.ca.no @River_Voice Oh wow! So many different editions! That should make this really fun! 6y
PurpleyPumpkin So looking forward to this! Thanks again for organizing. 😉 6y
Theresa @PurpleyPumpkin You're very welcome! I'm getting freakishly excited for this! 🤓 6y
Sisasuku I've got an ebook which I picked because of the cover - it shows gorgeous northern lights. 6y
tpixie Have fun!! 6y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks for the tag! I have been on a Litsy hiatus, family got me into playing games and now I have a reading slump... I have read Anna Karenina a year ago and loved it. I am not joining but I will be interested what people are saying. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Good for you! New games and fun with the family is always a great reason to take a reading break! 6y

Just 12 days until we start the #AnnaKareninaReadalong. I can't believe it's almost here! I broke the book out into sections that I hope are do-able each week with the goal of finishing by the end of January. I used the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition with the Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky translation. There may be some variation if you read a different version, but that's okay. There are no rules on the edition you select. 👇

Theresa I've heard the audiobook read by Maggie Gyllenhaal is good, so I'll may try that. Who knows! It'll all depend on my mood in the moment. 6y
Erin7 This has been on my TBR for a long time. I‘m really looking forward to finally getting it read. 6y

It's just over 2 weeks until we start the #AnnaKareninaReadAlong! As I prepare for my 2018 reading challenges I'm finding this book fits perfectly for prompts on several challenges. How about you? Do you need help finding a book in translation, a book set in a BRICS country, an Oprah's Book Club selection, a book over 500 pages, or any number of other prompts? This one fits the bill! Join us if you'd like!

Jess_Read_This I can‘t wait!! I am reading Pamela Paul‘s My Life With Bob and there is an Anna Karenina chapter! She says bookish girls mark their lives by periods of character identification. When she went to Thailand after school she was reading Anna Karenina and identified with her isolation from her people, Independence, and nonconformity. Since I haven‘t read the book, I had no clue what she is referencing...but it still made me happy to read it! 6y
Theresa @JoRead I hear you on challenges! I did too many this year & feel burned out. I think I'll just do Book Riot's read harder challenge in 2018. But I still find myself looking at all of them. I can't help myself. It's a problem. 😄 6y
Theresa @Jess_Read_This I've heard great things about that book!! I may have to pick it up after I finish AK. 6y
PurpleyPumpkin I am really looking forward to this! Plan to start reading on January 1st as I recover from New Year‘s festivities. 👍🏽 6y

Theresa @sprainedbrain @InLibrisVeritas I've been checking their page every day. I even checked it just after midnight this morning, but it wasn't there that early. 😆 6y
Theresa @Redheadrambles Me too on the social science! I'm not a big sci-fi fan so that one's going to be a struggle for me. Overall, tho, I think the 2018 challenge looks like it might be easier than the 2017 challenge. (I may need to eat this words later! 😂) 6y
Redheadrambles @Theresa yes taken as a whole I think you are right this does less tricky than 2017 and half the fun for me is finding books I like that fit the prompts 😀 6y
Daisey I gave up on the challenge this year, too many other books catching my attention, and a few super specific categories on the list. Overall, I agree next year‘s list looks a bit easier and looking forward to considering it in my reading plans. 6y
Theresa @Daisey IKR! The 2017 prompts were SO specific!! I did finish the challenge, but I didn't enjoy it as much as in previous years. The 2018 list almost feels like a relief. Maybe that's because my reading has gotten broader thru these challenges so things don't seem as daunting as they might have in the past. Yeah, I'll stick with that story! 😜 6y
