The Makioka Sisters
The Makioka Sisters | Jun'ichiro Tanizaki
Junichir? Tanizakis magisterial evocation of a proud Osaka family in decline during the years immediately before World War II is arguably the greatest Japanese novel of the twentieth century and a classic of international literature.
Tsuruko, the eldest sister of the once-wealthy Makioka family, clings obstinately to the prestige of her family name even as her husband prepares to move their household to Tokyo, where that name means nothing. Sachiko compromises valiantly to secure the future of her younger sisters. The shy, unmarried Yukiko is a hostage to her familys exacting standards, while the spirited Taeko rebels by flinging herself into scandalous romantic alliances and dreaming of studying fashion design in France. Filled with vignettes of a vanishing way of life, The Makioka Sisters is a poignant yet unsparing portrait of a familyand an entire societysliding into the abyss of modernity. It possesses in abundance the keen social insight and unabashed sensuality that distinguish Tanizaki as a master novelist.

Pickpick

A measured, dispassionate story of 4 sisters adhering to traditions as they scout a husband for their reticent 3rd sister while WWII looms in the background. Simplicity is not simplistic: Told all we seemingly need to know about them, still the younger two remain unknowable. For a book on marriage, it is devoid of romance and affirms to the end the absence of certainty in anything. A fascinating look at a particular point in Japanese culture.

One advantage to having things go a little awry with a postal bookclub is that previously secret books are now revealed, so I can decide whether or not to buy my own copy and read while I wait for late books to arrive. Obviously, since I have no self-control, I bought copies of the final three books I have to read. This one arrived today. #sorrynotsorry 🤷🏻‍♀️

This started off slow for me, but from about chapter 5 onwards, I couldn‘t put it down. It‘s an intimate look at the lives of four sisters of the upper classses of society in Japan in the years leading to WW2. A poignant portrait of the Makioka clan, particularly the women, and their relationships with each other. Their clinging-on to a way of life that is fast vanishing into modernity. 👇

erzascarletbookgasm With its tale of arranged marriage, it reads like an Austen novel (no witty parts, though) and reminds me of Tolstoy in Anna Karenina. The characters are wonderfully drawn, I was invested in them. (edited) 2y
erzascarletbookgasm The best parts of the book are the beautiful descriptive passages of bits of daily life, and the sceneries, change of seasons- all told in leisurely pace and has a cinematic feel to it. I really enjoyed this and I dig it why it‘s considered a classic masterpiece, Tanizaki‘s finest work. (edited) 2y

"Although Tatsuo for his part admitted that Yukiko was not unintellectual, he had concluded that, for a thoroughly Japanese girl whose reserve was extreme, a quiet, secure life in a provincial city, free from needless excitement, would be ideal, and it had not occurred to him that the lady herself might object. One of the books I'd never lend. Three very different sisters live in Osaka before WWII. One embraces modernity and independence enthusiastically, the others are more reluctant. Problems within the family & major outside events combined with vivid descriptons of family life make this book come alive. Had an epic feel to it, and I felt a bit cheated rhat the book had to end - as I almost always do with books that I love.

I enjoyed this book very much. Originally written in Japanese, it follows the four Makioka sisters through various trials in the middle of the last century. If you like fast-paced books, this will not be for you. It is like watching a slowly meandering creek. What I really appreciated is that even though I am separated from these characters by time and culture, I found they had many relatable concerns.

This Japanese novel from the 1940s foreshadows a hot topic in contemporary Japan: women putting on their make-up on the train. The rules against it are never enforced. I see women doing it every day; it doesn't bother me although I think it looks a little strange. Almost every Japanese person I've discussed it with of any age hates it. I've only ever seen a Japanese man using an electric razor once on the train, and thought it was equally odd.

saresmoore Interesting! 2y
shawnmooney @saresmoore I'm sure I had never ever seen this in Canada – how about in your world? 2y

I am even more stoked to be beginning this novel tonight now that I've seen on its Wikipedia page that, when it first began to be serialized in Japan in 1943, it attracted the suspicions of the wartime censors, who opined: "The novel goes on and on detailing the very thing we are most supposed to be on our guard against during this period of wartime emergency: the soft, effeminate, and grossly individualistic lives of women.”

saresmoore I had so many knee-jerk reactions to this, I think I kicked my poor cat. But I've calmed down and read the Wikipedia page myself. Clearly, I'll be reading this, too. 2y
