Girl Waits with Gun
Girl Waits with Gun | Amy Stewart
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nations first female deputy sheriffs. Constance Kopp doesnt quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.A smart, romping adventure, featuring some of the most memorable and powerful female characters I've seen in print for a long time. I loved every page as I followed the Kopp sisters through a too-good-to-be-true (but mostly true!) tale of violence, courage, stubbornness, and resourcefulness. Elizabeth Gilbert

#bookreport A good week, finished 4! Picked Girl Waits with Gun back up as I'm trying to work through the way too many books I have hibernating. And started My Man Jeeves on audio which is a bit disappointing so far, two of the stories at least were also in Carry On Jeeves.

#weeklyforecast finish Jeeves and continue with Wharton's Old New York, hopefully finish both the 60s and 70s. I doubt I'll finish Girl but you never know.

I loved the characters, and although based on actual historical events, the author manages to make the story quite her own.
I do think the story stalled around halfway through the book but all in all a great story, lots of gumption and great dialogue from the female MC and I loved that. I regret not having picked this up earlier. It was an entertaining listen part in thanks to Christina Moore's narration.

With this book, #pop23 (excluding advanced prompts) is done. #withgirlinthetitle

Also #booked23 #partofatrilogy - there's probably more in the series but it's so late in the year I can't be bothered to find an actual trilogy now.

On the 7th day of Christmas I pick Girl Waits With Gun for my #July2022 pick.
This is another book that I‘ve owned for years but never got around to reading. I read it for a genre reading class and am so glad I did. It was very interesting and based on actual events. I plan on continuing the series in 2023.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I liked the characters, it had some sharp humor that I really enjoyed, and I‘m definitely a fan of feminist period pieces. But a third of the way in it really started to drag, and didn‘t pick up again until the very end. I would have enjoyed this more if it had been shorter and if the suspense had been played up more.

Fast paced mystery set in 19s. I like the setting and characterisation but the plot was predictable. It didn‘t win as a mystery, but in general it is good. I like two characters in particular Constance Kopp and Sheriff. I am excited to read the next one in this series. Thanks for recommendation @CaitZ 💐

I have no idea how to plan a swap, but I have an idea. Each participant would start with book 1 of a series on their TBR list, share their thoughts as they read it, then pass it to the next participant. By the end, each participant has read book 1 of a few different series and decides if they want to continue on their own. Inspired by a swap I did with @suvata @Jerdencon and @IndoorDame . I‘d love help with the planning if anyone is interested.

IndoorDame I‘ve never planned a swap so I can‘t offer advice, but I know some of the veteran swap hosts will be happy to. Alternatively, since I think you‘re referring to one of our #lmpbc rounds, if you want to start small you could always propose first in series as a category for the next round of #lmpbc 2y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @IndoorDame waiting and being involved with another round of #lmpbc is also an option. I‘m not sure when @suvata plans to start another round. I also like the idea of having a separate swap just for the series, and therefore possibly being able to start it sooner, but maybe the idea is too similar? 🤷‍♀️ 2y
IndoorDame @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I think round 16 starts in November, so depending on how much time you wanted to plan you could definitely start up a new swap mid round. And I don‘t necessarily think it‘s too similar, though @suvata may have more thoughts on that. If you have specific questions about swaps I know @wanderinglynn and @LibrarianRyan are organizing some of the big fall swaps going on now. 2y
See All 9 Comments
wanderinglynn What you‘ve described is more a postal book club like #lmpbc. A swap is where you‘re matched with someone & you send them books, candy, bookish items (bookmarks, socks, mugs) based on the swap‘s theme. You send a box to your match & you receives box from the one who has your name. There‘s a designated open date for everyone to open their boxes & post a photo of what you received from your match. 2y
wanderinglynn A swap is a one & done event (one package sent, one packaged received) vs a book club where the book travels and ultimately comes back to the originator. I‘m happy to discuss more about swaps. You could do a swap that has the theme of series (I.e., the books people send are the start of a series). There are all sorts of swap themes. 2y
LibrarianRyan @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @indoordame I agree with @wanderinglynn. You are proposing a type of #travelingbook. I have done at least 2 of these and never got the book back. Normally one person decides the book (usually a first in a series) marks it up and sends it to the next person. This usually lasts a year so you have 12 participants. Sometimes you have multiple books going, sometimes not. depends. I enjoyed these, but I do know that I, and ⬇ 2y
LibrarianRyan a few others who did this at the start of litsy never got our books bad. The books I did not get back (even after asking multiple times) were The Last Magician, Tristan Strong, and I don't remember the 3rd. Being that these are so big it is really easy for people to fall behind. It is what makes #LMPBC nice. It is groups of 4. Only a 4 month commitment. Swaps are usually one and done. the others are book clubs. I don't know who is ⬇
2y
LibrarianRyan @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 is involved, but check out the #coffeebeanbookclub. They have been going on strong, they send the book and coffee. That is all I know. You might find a member and ask how they run things. That may be more what you are looking for. 2y
BethM @Mommamanzi runs #coffeebeanbookclub and it‘s no small feat! Ours is cozy themed. One cozy (pre selected) and coffee every month. Occasionally we hit snags but everyone gets their book back, largely bc of how Nicole runs it and the rules she keeps. 2y

I‘ve been looking for a great series to get sucked into for a while now. I love a story with a strong female leading character (or several of them) and have recently started to really enjoy mystery/crime investigation sort of stories. The #koppsistersseries seems to fit both of those things pretty perfectly.

AmyG I loved this book. Great characters and…I grew up in the area it takes place in (NJ)…so that was fun. (edited) 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I really like Amy Stewart, and she did an incredible amount of research for these books which are based on real women. 2y

smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @ChaoticMissAdventures that‘s even better!! I love reading books about real people. Especially if they are done well. I‘m currently reading Radium Girls and the author did a crazy amount of research for it as well. Almost 100 pages of the book is just her research! (edited) 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 oh! I have not read Radium Girls but that author did one I just read about a woman who fought against women being committed to asylums and it was very good 2y

I‘d call it a light pick. It was good, well written, just not something I would usually choose to read.

The youngest of the three sisters got on my nerves- quite a spoiled brat.

This book was a lot of fun-I finished it quick. Constance Klopp is a “large” woman for the time, over 6foot and almost 200lbs in 1914 (here with her sister Fleurette). The book opens with her cart being totaled by Henry Kaufman who refused to pay damages then went on to harass and threaten her for months. Constance refuses to back down & eventually becomes the first female deputy. This is the 1st in a series-can‘t wait to start book 2.

Jgotham I love reading about women who defy convention and be who they want to be. Her and her sisters refused to wed when they didn‘t want to and be controlled by men when it was seen as unladylike and suspicious. 3y

GIRL WAITS WITH GUN reads the headline of the newspaper in 1914, referring to the #truestory of Constance Kopp, one of America's first women to be named #deputysheriff. This fictionalized account has roots in history, found in sensationalized cartoons and headlines of the intrepid Misses Kopp. Constance is dragged into her battle with a corrupt businessman and rumored #BlackHander, showing that #goodpeople can't help but to #dogood. 18/365

3.5. This was somehow just what I expected and a bit of a disappointment. Not sure if it is the book or me, but I wasn't as invested in the story as I had hoped to be.
The writing is fine, love Amy Stewart, love that this is based off a true story, love that it is a story about badass women handling themselves. Something about it all fell flat for me though and I will not be continuing the series.

This historical mystery had very memorable characters. I bonded with these independent sisters who chose to live out in the country on their own in 1914 and brave gangsters together. The book was humorous in a way that pointed at society's flaws. I look forward to continuing with the series.

Pickpick

I really enjoyed the #lmpbc book this round!!! I had not heard of this series prior to these book picks and I‘m so glad to have come across them - I now need to read the whole series! The book is based on the true story of Constance Kopp - I enjoyed following her crime solving adventures 😁 Sending to @minkyb soon! @Carolyn11215 @Kappadeemom

Kappadeemom I mailed out the #LMPBC book to you today so be on the lookout! 5y
