Girl Waits with Gun
Girl Waits with Gun | Amy Stewart
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nations first female deputy sheriffs. Constance Kopp doesnt quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.A smart, romping adventure, featuring some of the most memorable and powerful female characters I've seen in print for a long time. I loved every page as I followed the Kopp sisters through a too-good-to-be-true (but mostly true!) tale of violence, courage, stubbornness, and resourcefulness. Elizabeth Gilbert

Interesting story and great characters. Not strictly a murder mystery, but there were definitely crimes committed. The ending was a little too neat, but overall this was an enjoyable read. I‘ll certainly be adding this series to my list!

I‘ve been looking for a great series to get sucked into for a while now. I love a story with a strong female leading character (or several of them) and have recently started to really enjoy mystery/crime investigation sort of stories. The #koppsistersseries seems to fit both of those things pretty perfectly.

AmyG I loved this book. Great characters and…I grew up in the area it takes place in (NJ)…so that was fun. (edited) 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I really like Amy Stewart, and she did an incredible amount of research for these books which are based on real women. 4mo

smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @ChaoticMissAdventures that‘s even better!! I love reading books about real people. Especially if they are done well. I‘m currently reading Radium Girls and the author did a crazy amount of research for it as well. Almost 100 pages of the book is just her research! (edited) 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 oh! I have not read Radium Girls but that author did one I just read about a woman who fought against women being committed to asylums and it was very good 4mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @ChaoticMissAdventures I think that‘s the one I saw at my local bookstore. The covers are so similar, I thought the stories might be related. 4mo

Congrats to our #LittenAuthor @AmyStewart!! 🥳🥳🥳
Amazon is developing this biographical novel for an hourlong drama series! Family secrets have kept the Kopp Sisters—Constance, Norma and Fleurette—isolated from the world until an unfortunate buggy accident brings trouble to their doorstep. When a gang-member threatens her sisters & the family farm, Constance teams up with local law enforcement to take down the criminals.

Beyond my usual rant about infantilizing women by using GIRL in titles about grown women, otherwise the book was fairly good. Although I thought it dragged a bit in parts.

I finished this today, just in time for tomorrow‘s Bookclub meeting!

I‘d call it a light pick. It was good, well written, just not something I would usually choose to read.

The youngest of the three sisters got on my nerves- quite a spoiled brat.

ChaoticMissAdventures It was a light pick for me too. I really love Amy Stewart, and went to an interview she did for this, I think without the background of her research I would not have liked it so much. 13mo

This book was a lot of fun-I finished it quick. Constance Klopp is a “large” woman for the time, over 6foot and almost 200lbs in 1914 (here with her sister Fleurette). The book opens with her cart being totaled by Henry Kaufman who refused to pay damages then went on to harass and threaten her for months. Constance refuses to back down & eventually becomes the first female deputy. This is the 1st in a series-can‘t wait to start book 2.

Jgotham I love reading about women who defy convention and be who they want to be. Her and her sisters refused to wed when they didn‘t want to and be controlled by men when it was seen as unladylike and suspicious. 1y

GIRL WAITS WITH GUN reads the headline of the newspaper in 1914, referring to the #truestory of Constance Kopp, one of America's first women to be named #deputysheriff. This fictionalized account has roots in history, found in sensationalized cartoons and headlines of the intrepid Misses Kopp. Constance is dragged into her battle with a corrupt businessman and rumored #BlackHander, showing that #goodpeople can't help but to #dogood. 18/365

3.5. This was somehow just what I expected and a bit of a disappointment. Not sure if it is the book or me, but I wasn't as invested in the story as I had hoped to be.
The writing is fine, love Amy Stewart, love that this is based off a true story, love that it is a story about badass women handling themselves. Something about it all fell flat for me though and I will not be continuing the series.

This historical mystery had very memorable characters. I bonded with these independent sisters who chose to live out in the country on their own in 1914 and brave gangsters together. The book was humorous in a way that pointed at society's flaws. I look forward to continuing with the series.

I had a wildlife filled #audiowalk today! 😄 I found another little turtle, even tinier than the one the other day. Lots of these birds--I don't know what they are, but they have pretty dark blue backs & love these birdhouses. I also saw some red-wing blackbirds & some sort of piper bird running along with long legs. & lots & lots of snails! 🐌

Megabooks If you ever have to pick up a snapper, they have incredibly long necks and their bites (even small ones) are strong, pick it up by the back shelf near the tail. That‘s the safest way to move them. 2y

Sometimes I‘ll start a book and then just move on from it for almost no reason at all... when this happens I tend to feel like maybe it just wasn‘t that book‘s season yet. This also happens a lot when I designate a book a “travel read” because after the trip is over I tend to put it off to the side even if I didn‘t finish it. Well, now that we‘re spending a lot more time indoors, one of my goals is to take on my DNFY pile (Did Not Finish Yet 😉).

I quite enjoyed this fictional account of three real sisters harassed by a man after he crashed into their buggy with his car. This was an incredible historical fiction novel based on the real life experiences of Constance Kopp, a female deputy sheriff in the early 1900‘s. The character development was amazing, the interactions and descriptions of the 3 very different sisters was very amusing and the way the author wove real letters and newspaper articles into the book was truly outstanding.
