The Lost Village
The Lost Village: A Novel | Camilla Sten
72 posts | 64 read | 64 to read
Addictively gripping and brilliantly chilling, The Lost Village by Camilla Sten is a pulse-pounding, riveting thriller from beginning to end. One day in 1959, an entire village of people disappeared leaving behind only the broken body of a woman in the town square, and an abandoned newborn in a schoolroom. No one knows why they vanished. No ones been there since. Until now. Documentary filmmaker Alice Lindstedt has been obsessed with the vanishing residents of the old mining town, dubbed The Lost Village, since she was a little girl. Her grandmothers entire family disappeared in this mysterious tragedy, and ever since, the unanswered questions surrounding the dead woman and abandoned baby have plagued her. Shes gathered a small crew of filmmaking friends to spend a few days in the quiet village and make a film about what really happened. There will be no turning back for them. Not long after theyve set up camp, mysterious things begin to happen. Equipment is destroyed. People begin to go missing. As doubt breeds fear and their very minds begin to crack, one thing becomes startlingly clear to Alice: they are not alone.

A page turner - creepy and a twist ending - and did I say creepy - I could see and feel the village and fear - past and present - really enjoyed this one!
Minor typos/timeline mistake - nothing that ruined the story for me -

I suppose I should start posting reviews 🤣

First book of 2022 complete and it was a winner! I love A good lost village story, especially if there are sinister happenings going on. 😈

I think this book matches the picture perfectly!

monalyisha Ohhh. I don‘t know if I‘ve ever read a “lost village” story. Kind of intrigued, tbh… 2w
monalyisha @FantasyChick Any others in the genre you‘d recommend? 2w
FantasyChick @monalyisha I love them! So eerie. The first ones that come to mind off the top of my head are Abandon by Blake Crouch and Phantoms by Dean Koontz. Historical fiction/horror mixes 😊 2w

Oh my goodness Chelle thank you so much for this amazing #LittleChristmasSwap package!! I‘m so excited for the books (incl the one “for buggy” 😜), I love these sweets, and the high voltage bones coffee addition is, as you know, perfect 😁. Such a wonderful start to a day off 😄😄 (oh and the card did say that this was for Little Christmas — I just hadn‘t opened it yet when I posted 😏)

Thank you @bookish_wookish for hosting this fun swap! ♥️🎄

MaleficentBookDragon Yay! I really enjoyed The Lost Village (I had a #netgalley copy so I read it a while ago). I am interested to hear what you think of it.
BTW I tried to take the target sticker off but I didn't want to mess up the cover so I'll let you do it. 😐

Avanders @MaleficentBookDragon nice! I can‘t wait - I kept realizing I didn‘t own it yet… glad that‘s finally fixed 😁😜 I‘m sure I can get that sticker off.. usually all it takes is a saline-wipe (I have kids… 😬) or some non-acetone nail polish remover (not too much so you don‘t take the ink off too 😜). You know, if you even worry about that sort of thing… 😁♥️🎄😘 2w

After the impressive, but emotionally damaging nonfiction books I read I needed something in my "comfort" genre.

This creepy ghost story of a haunted town is a low pick for me. While I loved how the story was unveiled between the present-day documentary and the past journals and letters, there were some open ended aspects that left me a little unfulfilled.

The descriptions of the town were very atmospheric and scary and really make the story.

It started slow but picked up. A description inside says it‘s Blair Witch meets Midsommar—but I wouldn‘t go that far. What this book is about, is how mental illness can end in tragedy, when it is untreated and seen as a bad, shameful, even evil—thing—especially in womxn🥀If you are suffering, please know that is okay to not be okay, it is okay to get help and there is no shame in it. There is always someone who will listen without judgement.

This is a solid 4 star for me. Good concept, well constructed, eerie atmosphere, good flow. The characterisation felt a little paint by numbers. The exception being Elsa, but she is in the 'past' timeline and we spend most of our time in the 'present'. Everyone in the present is a little obvious for lack of a better description. But not in a way that would make you put the book down. Well worth a read, won't blow your mind.

I have mixed feelings. It‘s a quick read, entertaining enough and I liked how the ending surprised me! I thought I knew where it was going but was wrong. However, I feel like this book could have used more oomph. It was trying to comment on mental illness and how woman have been treated over time but I don‘t think it did enough. It got started but landed flat. Didn‘t particularly care for the characters but the atmosphere was cool. 👇🏻

RainyDayReading It‘s compared to Midsommar and Night Film. Midsommar I agree with, but aside from the characters making a documentary, which they didn‘t really do while at the location, I don‘t agree with the Night Film comparison. So if you‘re going into this for Midsommar vibes, you‘ll find them. But if you‘re after Night Film, I‘d suggest looking for something else. 2mo

This was a great horror read, a small group of folks comes to remote village to document the small village if silvershern that is a ghost town. But has many secrets behind it. Well done with lots of surprised throughout. Loved the narrator and the back and forth through time to tell the whole story. 4.5 stars

I have seen mixed reviews for this book, but it hit the creepy mark for me. I highly recommend the audio if you pick it up.
In 1959, all of the residents of Silvertjarn, except a dead body hanging on a pole and an infant, found alive, disappear. Now, Alice and four other documentary crew members return to the old mining village to find out what happened. The story unfolds flipping back and forth between 1959 and now.

Reggie Is it found footage? Is there shaky cam? Lol have you watched Hellhouse. There‘s a trilogy but they all have their creepy moments. It‘s found footage of these people putting a haunted house up in a haunted hotel. Good stuff. 3mo
Bookzombie @Reggie Lol. The crew is actually there to get video and more details for their Kickstarter so they can fund the full documentary. I haven‘t watched Hellhouse. I will have to check it out. 3mo

For anyone looking for a book for the #charactersarefrenemies prompt (#booked2021) this one is an excellent choice. The friendship issues plaguing MCs Emmy and Alice are one of the main storylines.

I was expecting a book more atmospheric and creepy, and this didn‘t quite live up to those expectations, but it‘s a great book for fall!

Billed as Blair Witch meets Midsommar, this is not a graphic slasher-horror novel. Instead, there is a quiet menace the permeates each page, so the reader turns each one on high alert. It‘s creepy, atmospheric, sad, but brilliant. I do think that if you liked Laws of the Skies, you‘ll enjoy this, too. It has a similar tension to it - a slow relentless building of fear and paranoia then BOO! I loved it. But maybe don‘t read it at night.

The people of an entire village disappeared in 1959 except for a baby, and the mystery has never been solved. Alice is determined to learn more and brings a group to the village to investigate for her documentary, but creepy things start happening. This did have a good creep factor, and I liked both past and present storylines, though I‘m not sure the conclusion really pays off. A fun read, though.

Dark, creepy, & abandoned ghost town. I read this almost entirely in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The timeline moves back & forth between a modern-day documentary film crew & the months leading up to the disappearance of the townspeople. I loved incredibly atmospheric setting & propelled through the plot by the addicting narrative. I couldn't read fast enough & putting it down was NOT an option. A good, quick, & creepy read.

No doubt there will be a movie or limited TV series made of this book. It has all the elements of a pot boiler that would appeal to viewers. But I thought the ending was weak and overall the prose seemed overly dramatic and somewhat purple. It left me feeling manipulated in the same way that Gone Girl did. Three and a half stars, and that‘s generous.

I received this from NetGalley. I was really interested in figuring out what happened to a whole village that disappeared, but once it started getting into the religious and how the pastor was changing things, I pretty much realized what happened. I did like the characters and the way the writer showed their emotions and brought the village alive. I would recommend this to anyone that likes horror.

This was very creepy & atmospheric. A film crew, some of whom have ties to the town, arrive to start filming a documentary about a ghost town in Sweden. Nearly 900 people vanished without a trace 60 years ago & they hope to find out why. The present day storyline was good but the petty bickering got on my nerves a few times. The past storyline was better. It was sad and frightening and compelling. I was glad, yet horrified, to learn the truth ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ about what happened to the villagers. This can be read as simply a creepy "ghost" story but it's also an exploration of mental illness, see the author's more at the front of the book. 8mo

This book is somewhere between a pan & a so-so. I thought the foreword was fabulous.

There was so much promise written into the setting & plot. I don't feel like the author had the skills to develop this book to its full potential. There was a lot of focus on breathing & exhaling. I really struggled to stay engaged.

The ending was surprising but not in a good way. Definitely disappointed. I can't see myself recommending this to anyone.
