I‘m going to power through the rest of my September reviews before I sleep in prep for the big readathon tomorrow.🎉

I was skeptical about this one for years (golly the reviews are SO polarized), but I fell decidedly to the pick side. Heartbreaking while also heartwarming, Oskar‘s story of grief and healing is compelling, and the writing and narrative choices really worked for me.

Glad I chose for #RelatedTo911 prompt for #Booked2021.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve had this on my shelf for years. I fear I‘ll never be strong enough. 2y
sprainedbrain @Prairiegirl_reading it‘s rough…. Not gonna lie. 2y
BarbaraBB I loved this one too and was skeptical at forehand too because I didn‘t care much for 2y
sprainedbrain @BarbaraBB I actually haven‘t read that one… and I don‘t think I will. 😬 2y

This is told from the perspective of a teenage girl writing to her baby sister who died on 9/11 – not in the terrorist attacks, but after being hit by a car. Among other things, it's a story about family dynamics and how we deal with grief. Unfortunately, I just didn't really connect with the protagonist; while it wasn't a bad book, I wasn't that enthusiastic about it.

In the wake of 9/11 Luke and Corinne meet. While the city mourns they fall in love, working in a Soup Kitchen near Ground Zero. They feel guilty about their feelings in the light of what happened and towards their spouses and kids.
It‘s a complicated love story amidst worlds falling apart. #Booked2021 #RelatedTo911

This #audiobook is a comprehensive look at the failure of the Afghanistan War. Particularly timely now. The most sensible thing I read was someone that said we should‘ve paid for a generation of students to go to school in India, then let them run their own country. I think that would‘ve been a lot more effective than the nation building the US did try to do.

8little_paws I just got this last week. Can't wait 3y
MallenNC I am on hold for this at my library. 3y
Megabooks @8little_paws I definitely think this is up your alley. So many things went wrong there! 3y

Megabooks @MallenNC I hope you find it as enlightening as I have. Fascinating book. 3y
Cinfhen So relevant!!! How sad on the 20th anniversary of 911 the Taliban is back in power 😞😭 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen true. I definitely see the point I paraphrased in my review that if we had focused on meeting Afghans where they were at rather than funneling money and trying to make it America, perhaps we would‘ve been more successful at lasting change. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I think that point is incredibly wise. While agree that finding bin Laden and eliminating his terror network was important, I think pretty much everything else we did there was misguided and short sighted. Education—especially of girls—might‘ve made a huge difference. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage a lot of the quotes in this book from all levels of the military as well as some civilians are from a project called “Lessons Learned”. I hope we did learn lessons from this. Some of the Pakistani people said they were hedging their bets by staying on the Taliban‘s good side. Just an incredibly f***ed up situation that cost a lot of lives. 3y
BarbaraBB That would have been so wise indeed. Instead so much was lost. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB agree, unfortunately. 3y

If you want to dive into the details of this tragic days, definitely consider this as an audiobook. It is more moving than any other book I‘ve listened to. Ever. The heroism will inspire you. But be prepared for all the feels, though.

Also interesting in light of current events, from Afghanistan to the pandemic. Made me think!

Cinfhen I have to say I was more moved emotionally by this NF audio about 9/11 #InfiniteTissueListen 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I will give this one a try too. I may reach burnout if I do too many together, though. It‘s intense. 3y

Cinfhen Absolutely!! It‘s very raw to relive and hear the footage/ audio from that day 💔 3y
nichollinlove Wow. That's really good feedback for the audiobook. I just put a hold on it through the library. Thank you for the review. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @nichollinlove I hope it moves you like it did me. Some of it felt overwhelming but at the same time, I couldn‘t stop listening. 3y

I think we all know exactly where we were and what we were doing when we learned about the attack of 9/11. I remember being in total shock. But I don‘t think I fully grasped the magnitude of that event until I read (or in this case, listened to) this book. I ugly cried. Many many times. It‘s heartbreaking, inspirational and so humbling. I cannot recommend this enough.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Started the audiobook. Can‘t stop listening. With my heart in my throat. OMFG … I mean I was alive then, and an adult. But this is just gutting me.

#booked2021 #relatedto911

MallenNC I‘ve tried to read this one because I know it is so well done, but it still felt too close for me. Even 20 years on. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MallenNC I hear you. It‘s a tough one. And I‘m listening, which means some of it is actual recordings. I‘m caught between knowing I should stop before I lose it and feeling like I can‘t stop. 3y
Lesanne This book was…..simply amazing. In a gut-wrenching and devastating way! 3y
See All 12 Comments
Ruthiella I did this as an audio/e-book combo because I couldn‘t listen to the actual recordings from the planes. It was just too difficult. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lesanne I agree. I absolutely can‘t put it down. I‘m literally listening with other people in the room, which I don‘t usually do. I cannot stop. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Ruthiella Yes, I understand the need for that. It is rough … 3y
MallenNC I listened to a webinar with the author today and found out he‘s just released a podcast on 9/11 which goes into more depth on the ripple effects of the attacks. I just started listening and if I can make it though the podcast I‘m going to try the book again. http://www.longlead.com/long-shadow/ 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MallenNC oooh. Thanks. I will look for that. I just finished the book today! So so so intense. Was just telling my hubs about ALL the stuff it made me think about. 3y
MallenNC @BarbaraTheBibliophage He said the webinar answers more questions that he couldn‘t do in the book since it was an oral history of the day. The first episode was hard to listen to, but so well done. It talks about how some much of what happened that day was due to a failure of imagination. No one thought the buildings could collapse. (edited) 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MallenNC I just downloaded episode 1. Definitely plan to listen and catch up. Right - and now we even have that Surfside, FL building (totally different reason of course). Impermanence… 3y
MallenNC @BarbaraTheBibliophage He says that before 9/11 no skyscraper had been collapsed by fire. I thought of the Florida condo too. Different reason, of course, but another unimaginable situation (edited) 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MallenNC I‘m sure that‘s correct - it was catastrophic. 3y
