The Guncle
The Guncle | Steven Rowley
From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer. Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is honestly a bit out of his league. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of "Guncle Rules" ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting--even if temporary--isn't solved with treats and jokes, Patrick's eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you're unfailingly human. With the humor and heart we've come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love, patience, and family in even the most trying of times.

Another winner recommended by @Cinfhen for #NYWD. I had seen this book around bookstagram but hadn‘t read it because I thought it would either be too sad or too sentimental. I ended up really loving it. Patrick is such a great character and I loved his niece and nephew. It ends well but I‘d still love to spend more time with these characters.

monalyisha This was on so many lists! Lots of love for it. 6d
Cinfhen I‘m so glad you were open to trying it!! It was the right blend of sweetness & sorrow!! I have to say, the audio narration was FABULOUS ( if you ever want to re-visit) (edited) 6d

Aubgurl @LiteraryinLawrence one of my goals this year is to brighten up my bookcase and branch out of my normal genre. I read a TON of thrillers so my bookshelf is pretty dark. These were books from a different genre (aside from The Ballerinas) that I had wanted to read (The Guncle), was recommended by the bookstore (The UnHoneymooners) or I had read a previous book in the series (The Singles Table) The Bookish Life of Nina Hill sounded fun! 2w

After reading @KarenUK ‘s review I immediately went to Libby and lucky me started reading the ebook ASAP. ( all other books tossed aside ) This has so much heart. Patrick‘s been chillaxing in Palm Springs since his hit sit com went off the air. But a family tragedy finds him the unexpected guardian to his niece and nephew. I cried and laughed. A great escape from winters cold ( it‘s set in California) It reminded me of my own wonderful Guncle 💚

Cinfhen Such a delightful book!! (edited) 3w

Ever read a book else everyone loves & you vow to never read the author again but another comes out & it has such a charming premise that you can't not pick it up so you figure if you hate it you can write the author off forever but then it‘s a little sweet & a little melancholy & a little uplifting & a little funny and combines into a heartwarming read so now you have to go back & read the book that came out after the one you hated? Yup, me too.

This was one of my most fun reading experiences all year. GUP, Gay Uncle Patrick, is a hilariously bitchy, playful, reclusive prima-donna actor who by a tragic circumstance, has a summer of taking care of his little niece and nephew. It‘s funny and heartwarming and heartbreakingly sad at times, as Patrick and his charges, navigate their new world, and the awful losses they have endured. A perfect summer read.

I'm back to Litsy, y'all. Life has started to settle down a bit, and I'm hoping to get back to reading more.
My friend gave Guncle to me saying, " I couldn't get past the title-" not the best vote of confidence. However, I really enjoyed this. It managed to be really light even though a central premise of the novel is grief and how it brings the main characters together.

Crazeedi Welcome back!! I know how you feel. I had too much going on in my life earlier this year, my mind wasnt the best. Sometimes we have to just take care of ourselves. Glad to see you here again 1mo

This book was fantastic. I loved the uncle children relationship. When the children mother passes away and dad is sent away for pill addiction. Guncle is put in charge of his niece and nephew. After a family tragedy Greg O‘Hara, asks his brother, Patrick, to be his children‘s primary guardian for three months. Maisie and Grant know little about their uncle who they affectionately call GUP (Gay Uncle Pat). Patrick is a semi-retired actor who lives a reclusive lifestyle in Palm Springs. Patrick, with his unusual wit and wisdom, helps the children work through the healing process and their understanding of what family really means.

This is a pick, but it took me to the end as a collective story to say that, the main character Patrick the “guncle” is somewhat off putting in trying to navigate his niece and nephew, but during the coarse of the story Patrick finds himself examining his life on this journey to help the children and ultimately also helps himself. I finished this yesterday so didn‘t make #superseptember readathon

Has some pacing problems — but so does the experience of moving through grief, which is, in large part, what this book is all about. It‘s slow. And not much happens. But then it turns out that the “not much” is crucial.

That being said, I sometimes put it down for too long & felt little compulsion to pick it back up again. But whenever I did, I was utterly charmed. The characters are delightful & the whole story is suffused with humor & warmth.

I can see why this book is enjoyable. GUP is fun and is learning a lot while taking care of the kids, but it is a little bit slow moving for me and it turned into a bail. I just don‘t care about the celebrity or ex-celebrity life and Palm Springs and that dragged down the speed of the book for me. I can see where the idea is fun and why people like it. Maybe this will be a “listen to” instead of “read it” book.

This was a really fun book that had more depth to it than I had expected. On the surface, it was about an uncle and his new-found responsibilities to his niece and nephew when he's needed the most. On a deeper level, it was about navigating through grief, and the importance of friends and family.

And what's not to love about a book that weaves Oscar Wilde quotes throughout the story?! 💙

KathyWheeler I especially loved the way he dealt with his niece and her feelings about bathing suits. I loved a lot about this book, but for some reason that struck a cord with me. 5mo
