My almost 10 year old really liked the book. She liked learning about Willa‘s struggles with Sensory Processing Disorder (her Autistic brother has SPD & it helped her understand him). The story is told from Willa‘s perspective. I am a little more critical than my daughter, so it‘s a low pick for me. I do feel that representation matters & there needs to be more stories for kids about all kinds of disorders & disabilities. But…
July is disability pride month. Disability rights are civil rights. All policy is disability policy. The disability community is one of the most disenfranchised groups in access to voting (many places are not ADA compliant & disabled people are essentially denied their right to vote). Many decisions/laws/polices about the lives of disabled people are made without input from disabled people. Right now the disability community is terrified. The

My son is autistic so I nervous going into this but I loved it.
Yes, it‘s heartbreaking and difficult at times (the history of how autistic children were treated is brutal) but it is full of history, science and hope. It is well written, well researched and it genuinely changed my perspective on autism in the best possible way. Important and thought provoking, everyone needs to read this book.
12 years ago today I became a Mummy. My beautiful boy has complex special needs and my world has become a whole lot smaller over the last decade. It‘s one of the reasons books are so important to me, they aren‘t just my escape from everyday life, they are my chance to go other places and have other adventures. Books keep me sane!
This was a novel in verse about a girl who is struggling more with her neurodivergence as she gets into middle school. She comes to realize that she‘s on the autism spectrum and other members of her family probably are as well. She becomes an advocate for herself as she learns there are others who feel the same and more about accommodations that can be helpful.
