What a book!

Charlie, who has an intellectual disability, is offered the chance to potentially, finally, be “smart” - through an operation and scientific study, Charlie can have a higher IQ!

First proven successful on a mouse, Algernon, Charlie figures he has nothing to lose. But when Algernon begins deteriorating, we learn something too good to be true is too good to be true.

Heart wrenching and incredible... highly recommend.

I read this between July 17 & 19th and rated it 4 ⭐️ on Good Reads. I was spoiled for the ending so it kind of ruined the book a little book as I knew what was going to happen. That said it does make you think about how far humans tend to go with science and medicine.

Flowers for Algernon is now my favourite book! Everyone is Charlie in some way. It's just he stuck in childhood and senectitude much longer and went through the other period of life in a few months. It inspires me to take care of Charlie around me and think about some Charlie's problems in life.

What a beautiful, thoughtful book. I have an intellectually impaired man in my life and it made me think of him a lot too.

I read the short story growing up and it had a big impact. Powerful, emotional.

This is the novel which has expanded the back story. It's a bit dated and loses some of the punch of the story.

4 stars

I initially read Flowers for Algernon as a teen & while I remembered the basic premise and the outcome, I couldn‘t recall all that was in between. I discovered that this is an incredibly complex novel. There is so much going on in this book. I am glad I reread it because I think I missed out on the intricacies the first time around.

The book was first point of view told by Charlie. He's a slower fellow who works at a bakery. He starts writing these progress reports explaining the operation he's just gone through to make him smarter. Algernon is a mouse who underwent the same operation. The great thing about the book is that it's still very relatable to today. He struggles with growing his emotional understanding to keep up with his fast growing intellectual mind.

Two moving books about how science and technology, while trying to improve a person‘s life, can change the very essence of who a person is. The takeaway seems to be that we should love and tolerate each other more, and try to change each other less.
