Oryx and Crake
Oryx and Crake | Margaret Atwood
A stunning and provocative new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The Blind Assassin, winner of the Booker Prize.Margaret Atwoods new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. For readers of Oryx and Crake, nothing will ever look the same again. The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief. With breathtaking command of her shocking material, and with her customary sharp wit and dark humour, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable realm populated by characters who will continue to inhabit our dreams long after the last chapter. From the Paperback edition.

This was a very different dystopian world than Atwood created with The Handmaid‘s Tale, but still so good. I can‘t wait to read the rest of the trilogy - this got me through a full day of #audiocleaning yesterday as well as some #audiocrochet

Mitch Ive read the first one too - and loved it, must get back to that world soon. PS - love the crochet... that's a skill that has sadly passed me by! 1w
SamAnne I love this trilogy! Perhaps my favorite is the 2nd in the series, After the Flood. All three gave me very disturbing dreams though. There has been a rumored HBO series based on the trilogy. 1w
sprainedbrain I adore this trilogy! Just finished it this summer. ❤️ 1w
rwmg @SamAnne Yes, the middle one was my favourite too. 1w
SamAnne And there would be the mornings listening to NPR: “Scientists have perfected growing human livers in pigs.“ NOOOOOOOO! Or, “Scientists have made strides in growing chicken meat in the lab.“ Noooooo! I loved the trilogy because Atwood does her research and she incorporated so much “on-the-cusp“ technology in the novels, we could hear about it on NPR while reading the book.

Okay, so, hear me out:

I read 300 pages of ORYX AND CRAKE.

I never grew invested in the characters.

I was mildly interested in what happened, but I didn‘t NEED answers.

I found the story cruel and bitter. Atwood seemed keen to shit on anything anyone might enjoy. Any shreds of hope were buried deep.

Maybe the last 140 pages are amazing. I doubt they‘d wow me enough to pay for the 300 before.

I don‘t need this in my life right now.

SamAnne Oh I loved the trilogy. It gave me nightmares but a lot to think about. But I know it is not everyone‘s flavor 4mo
xicanti @SamAnne many, many people have told me this is one of their faves so I gave it way longer than I would‘ve otherwise done, but yeah. Honestly, I think Atwood‘s whole body of work just doesn‘t move me the way I want it to. 😔 4mo

Onward through ORYX AND CRAKE, with a side trip into this f/f manga and a pint of beer that matched both books‘ colour schemes. I‘m still not fully engaged in the Atwood, even after almost 140 pages, but I‘ll stick with it thanks to everyone‘s input this morning. Some of my very favourite books didn‘t click for me until 250 pages in, so there‘s a precedent and I‘ll cling to it.

I‘m 90 pages into ORYX AND CRAKE, and while it‘s not terrible or anything, I do generally expect to be a bit more invested by this point. Hmm. We‘ll see how it goes today.

I promise I didn‘t have anything dodgy floating in my tea. That‘s just a weird glare from the window.

Curiouser_and_curiouser Cool, it's on my TBR list. I'm a few chapters into The Blind Assassin on audiobook by Attwood and I'm not invested yet either but I'm told it's worth it to pursue. Good luck with it, it usually takes me longer to feel that in a book so I hope it's worth it for you when you get there 4mo
Leo1733 It took me a bit to get into this one. I read the first chapter or so, then put it down for about six months because it just didn't grab me. When I picked it back up, I started it all over. I pushed through it for a while but once it grabbed me, it held on. I actually ended up loving the second two books in the series even more. Maybe because I listened to them? Not sure but they are still with me. They stay in my thoughts and I will revisit them. 4mo

This was so good! It begins with an apocalypse that has wiped out human society that our protagonist is trying to survive, and reveals tiny bits of information so you don't discover exactly how the apocalypse came about until the end!

“Anyway, maybe there weren‘t any solutions. Human society, they claimed, was a sort of monster, it‘s main by-products being corpses and rubble. It never learned, it made the same cretinous mistakes over and over, trading short-term gain for long-term pain.”

I was brave and tackled #authorswhoscareme and #booksthatwinprizes (or are nominated...) with this and I‘m glad I did; I enjoyed the writing and to an extent the story. I liked the flashbacks, and how the events that led to the dystopian future we find Snowman in are explored, but I‘m not sure this stands out over other dystopian fiction I‘ve read. That said it was just getting going when it ended. So am I invested enough to read the next two?!

Heatherfeather What's interesting about this book is how long ago it was published. I feel like a lot of dystopian literature since then was influenced by it. 6mo

First book complete for #24b4Monday and last book complete for the spring prompts of #booked2019 #clifi. (Only a small climate aspect) I really should have known better with this book. I can do some dystopian fiction but post apocalyptic is not my jam. It took about 200 pages before the reader even has a clue what is happening.. the last 150 pages or so are good, albeit disturbing. And the ending. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️. not for me.

Post-apocalyptic novels are supposed to be depressing, right? But this one was just a little bit much at times. It made me uncomfortable, but guess it pushed me out of my boundaries. I enjoyed the pacing but besides the MC, the other characters fell flat for me. There were also just straight weird stuff in this book, which was interesting and distressing at the same time. Planning to finish the series because I want explanations!

Pickpick

Fair to say that this is not for everyone, but it was for me. It requires some patience and the ability to fill in the blanks as Margaret Atwood does not spell out everything. I don't need to like the characters to like a book or for a book to pull on my emotions. It's been over a week since I finished reading this, and the foreboding, the dread and the emptiness still lingers on me.

tealwish @CoffeeNBooks Me too! I have read Handmaid's Tale, Blind Assassin and now this. Love her writing style! 12mo
tealwish @Lovesbooks87 It's like Goodreads and Instagram had a nerdy baby!! :) 12mo
Lovesbooks87 @tealwish that is an awesome way to think about it! 12mo
CoffeeNBooks @tealwish I've read The Handmaid's Tale several times (I teach it in my AP Literature class), Oryx & Crake, Cat's Eye, The Heart Goes Last, and one of her books of poetry. I have several of her books on my bookshelf, but haven't read them yet. 12mo
tealwish @CoffeeNBooks Oryx and Crake felt almost complete, so I am not immediately going after the sequel like I often do. I heard good things about Cats Eye. Didn't realize she had poetry out there, but I am sure I would like it. 12mo
CoffeeNBooks @tealwish Cat's Eye seemed different from the other books of hers that I've read, but I really liked it. I didn't know she had books of poetry until a few years ago when one of my friends told me. 12mo

Is it weird to say I appreciated this book, but I didn‘t like it? Oryx and Crake is filled with interesting ideas and fascinating world building...and I couldn‘t wait for it to end. Goodreads seemed to love this book, so maybe it‘s just me?

Madds I read this for class and it was pretty 50/50 split on who loved it and who hated it. (Personally I was a fan but you can‘t please everyone!) 9mo

This book is everything a dystopian should be. Intriguing , original, imaginative. Love the world and the concepts . I thought it was a stand alone but have been informed there are more in the series which is great because I need to know what happens. Atwood really has a way with words she cuts you deep and leaves you bleeding .

Heideschrampf A great photo for a great authoress! 12mo

Current favorite reading spot is the kitchen floor. The sun floods in perfectly during the day and I sun with the cats while reading. This is the life. Salem is intrigued by this interesting book. We are both not so sure how we like it yet! Salem: “sniffing it has not changed my opinion of it. Step two taste it.” #catsoflitsy

Minervasbutler Salem has good taste. Great book! 12mo
madamereadsalot1 I love this book! I hope you enjoy it too. The rest of the series is also excellent, but different from the first. 12mo
